VISION & STRATEGY

Dear Archbishop Alter High School Community,

What an exciting time to be an Alter Knight! On Friday, May 11, 2018, we saw a dream realized in the ribbon cutting for the Arts Wing that was first envisioned over 10 years ago. Father James Manning blessed the Christine Connor and Fred J. Miller Conservatory of the Arts surrounded by the many guardian angels that made this dream a reality. At long last, the third phase of the capital campaign that brought us a renovated Chapel and science labs as well as a turf field completed its mission by bringing a 2 story band room, a 238 seat theater, a dance classroom, and an art classroom to fruition. I must be honest and tell you that the grandeur of the new building brought tears to my eyes as I walked through it with the many benefactors who wanted our students to have facilities to match their talents, the talent of our faculty, and the quality of the instruction that they had been receiving.

The students’ reaction was truly my favorite part of the grand opening. After a celebratory balloon launch to give glory and honor to God for the gift of the arts wing, the students were able to go through the building for the first time. The looks on their faces reminded me why we undertake any project at our school – it is first and foremost for the students and the education of the whole student. They were awed, grateful and simply amazed at what had been created in the space. I am so excited to see what the future holds for our school, and all of the opportunities that this wing will help to create. May God continue to smile down upon our school, its students and families, and the entire Alter community, and may he continue to light our path to a bright future.

The New Arts Wing

From the Advancement DirectorRick Willits ‘88The Capital Campaign “Answer the Call” started back in 2007 with a vision of improvement for Alter High School in key areas. In Phase 1, the Chapel, Campus Ministry, the Spirt Shop, STEM labs, and an addition to the Aux Gym were completed. Phase 2 was a complete upgrade to the Athletic Fields, Track, and Bleachers, along with some Technology upgrades. Partial funding was made to the Teachers Compensation and Financial Aid Endowments.

Phase 3 is close to completion. It is the first major building addition to the Alter campus since the Aux gym was built in the early 70’s. This building is the new Christine Connor and Fred J. Miller, Conservatory of the Arts. It is hard to miss when you pull on campus. Designed by MODA4 and built by Fender Construction, it will house a 238-seat theater, several music rooms, an art room and art gallery and a dance room. The original budget for the Conservatory of the Arts project was $4.5M and funding/pledges were secured totaling $4.2M. Site prep began in May of 2017 and ground was broken as the school year ended. Due to increased construction costs, a few design changes, building code requirements and furniture, fixtures and equipment, the cost of this beautiful building increased to $5.3M. The great news is that there is plenty of unique recognition opportunities that exist, like stars and seat naming to complete the $860K required to pay off the loans. Once funding is complete, this will bring to a close approximately $13.1M in improvements to Alter High School!

A celebration and community open house was conducted on May 11, 2018. As Lourdes Lambert said, “Our new Conservatory of the Arts is a building that matches the quality of our teachers, programs, students and alumni. It is truly something which the Alter community can be proud.” The possibilities and use of this building are endless. A huge thank you goes out to the many generous benefactors that made this possible!

Our Alter “community” continues for a lifetime….. So many 2010 Alter alums gathered to celebrate, as Zach Brand ’10, entered into the sacrament of marriage.  All of the boys (pictured with their sweet moms) are Alter alums ex-cept one, but he is engaged to Mary Ku-nesh ‘10!  Many of the boys have been friends since their days together at St. Charles grade school.  Pictured (L-R):  Ben Tillar (Sylvia), Zach Spangler (Paige), Ryan Lachey (Trish’77), Alex Crouch (Rose), Zach Brand (Marcia), Dan Heider (Fran ‘81), Luke Waggenspack (Rose), Joe Colavincenzo (Peggy), Charlie Erhart (Janet), Josh Gillis (Theresa).
