Davey O’Brien Awards Dinner February 18, 2013

this event is sold out.

Johnny Manziel2012 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award® Winner

Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M University is the 2012 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Winner. Todd Blackledge, the 1982 Davey O’Brien Winner, presented the award to Manziel during The Home Depot College Football Awards at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

During Texas A&M’s first season in the SEC, the redshirt freshman guided his team (11-2, 6-2 SEC) to their best final BCS ranking since 1998. In postseason play, the Aggies notched a 41-13 victory against former Big 12 opponent Oklahoma in the AT&T Cotton Bowl, in which Manziel was named Offensive MVP for his performance (287 passing yards; 229 rushing).

The explosive signal caller from Kerrville, Texas had a record-setting season. Manziel passed for 3,706 yards and rushed for 1,410 yards, becoming just the fifth NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision player and first freshman to throw for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season. He finished the season ranked first in the NCAA in total offense (393.54 yards per game) and points responsible for (21.69). Manziel also led the SEC with 1,410 rushing yards and 47 total touchdowns, while setting the conference record for total yards in a season with 5,116.

Eddie leBaronDavey O’Brien Legends Award Recipient

Eddie LeBaron has been selected as the recipient of the 2012 Davey O’Brien Legends Award. A California native, LeBaron excelled on the gridiron at University of the Pacific, earning All-American honors and later an induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. He was selected in the 10th round of the 1950 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins, but deferred his NFL career to serve in the Korean War. LeBaron accepted a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, and subsequently spent nine months in Korea where he was twice wounded. He received a Purple Heart and was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroism. LeBaron transferred to the inactive reserve in 1952 to begin his NFL career with the Washington Redskins.

After flourishing in his first season, throwing for 1,420 yards and 14 touchdowns, he was named NFL Rookie of the Year. LeBaron played seven seasons with the Washington Redskins (1952-53, 55-59) before becoming the Dallas Cowboys’ first quarterback. The four-time Pro Bowler hung up his cleats in 1963 after passing for 13,399 yards and 104 touchdowns.

Following his retirement from football, LeBaron went on to practice law with a degree he had earned during the offseason. After a brief stint with the NFL’s league office, LeBaron returned to California and joined the law firm of Pillsbury, Madison, and Sutro where he served as managing partner of the firm’s Sacramento office until retiring in 1997.

The Davey O’Brien Foundation is honored to present the Charles Ringler Founder’s Award to two of the Foundation’s past presidents, Pat Evans and Bobby McGee, both of whom continued Ringler’s legacy of passion, pride and perseverance for the Foundation and its effort throughout their tenures. The Charles Ringler Founder’s Award was created in 2004 to honor him for establishing the Foundation and the Davey O’Brien Memorial Trophy. Because of Ringler’s leadership and steadfast commitment, the regional Memorial Trophy developed into the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award and over the past 35 years has gained national recognition and prestige.

Charles Ringler & Davey O’Brien

16 Fort Worth Club Magazine • Spring 2013 www.fortworthclub.com

Remembering Charles Ringler (1920-2012)Founder, Davey O’Brien Foundation and Davey O’Brien Memorial Trophy

Charles Ringler believed that the accomplishments and commitment of Davey O’Brien, one of Fort Worth’s finest sports heroes and Ringler’s longtime friend and business partner, deserved to be honored and remembered. In November 1977, just before O’Brien passed away from cancer, Ringler and other members of The Fort Worth Club established the Davey O’Brien Foundation and the Davey O’Brien Memorial Trophy. The trophy was presented annually to the most outstanding player in the Southwestern states of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Four years later the award was expanded nationally and limited to quarterback, the primary position of O’Brien. The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award and Ringler’s complete dedication to the organization spanned throughout the remainder of his life.

“He was totally devoted to the Foundation and completely dedicated to the memory of Davey O’Brien,” said Virginia Ringler, wife of Charles. “His interest never waned.”

Since its inception, the Foundation has given away more than $850,000 in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life. The Charles Ringler Founder’s Award was established in 2004 and honors individuals or a corporation devoted to the Davey O’Brien Foundation that has exhibited the same passion, pride and perseverance as Charles himself. This year’s co-recipients are Pat Evans and Bobby McGee.

“They were very close friends of Charles,” Virginia said. “He would be so delighted that they are receiving this award.”

Charles spent his last four years in a nursing home, but his involvement in the Foundation remained strong. Virginia says Davey O’Brien Foundation executive director Danielle Moorman would bring Charles minutes after every meeting to his delight.

“He read every word of them,” Virginia said. “That kept him feeling involved, which was wonderful. Danielle was so kind to keep him apprised of every decision and included him when she could. It gave him something to hang on to.”

Southwest BankSpACE: 5th floor, Club BuildingTEnAnT SinCE: 2008

Member Robert Molloy says some may find it a little strange that a bank is located on the fifth floor, but it works well for Southwest Bank’s business model.

“The Fort Worth Club branch was Southwest Bank’s seventh location in the greater Fort Worth area at the time, and we have since grown to fourteen locations,” says Molloy. “The Club provides a convenient and professional place for business meetings, whether it is breakfast, lunch or happy hour.

The food and the service are exceptional and my guests always walk away with positive remarks.”

Molloy says the Club is always his first choice for business meetings. On a personal level, Molloy has hosted his family’s Thanksgiving lunch at the Club for several years.

“For members who have not attended the luncheon, I can tell you that the Club’s buffet is great and it flat out beats the buffet at the Four Seasons (Austin), which charges twice the amount,” Molloy says. “Congratulations to Walter and the entire Club staff on pulling together a great event.”

“I chose The Fort Worth Club as my venue because of the beautiful ballroom and views,” said Katie Segreti. “Also, I knew my guests would enjoy the proximity to entertainment downtown and to the First United Methodist Church where our ceremony was.” Guests were able to walk over from the church after the ceremony and were treated to tray passed wine and hors

d’oeuvres upon arrival. They enjoyed a full buffet (“Our friends are still talking about the macaroni and cheese!” Katie said.) and danced the night away before lining up and throwing rose petals at the couple as they left the building. “It was a great end to a fabulous night!” Katie said. “Everyone seemed to have a blast!”

Blake Barakat Athletic Center Front Desktenure: October 2012

HoMetown: Arlington, TX

HoBBies: Seeing movies, attending sporting events, watching live music and hanging out with his friends

Best part oF His joB so Far: “I’ve enjoyed building relationships with everyone at the Club, whether it’s employees or members. And, of course, the Christmas party.” (Blake competed in the Club’s ugly Christmas sweater employee competition.)

“Blake joined the Club less than four months ago and has already volunteered at several Club special events. He has taken point on many new programs and events that will continue to take the Athletic Center to the next level. Most recently, the Athletic Center needed to completely revamp its inventory system. Knowing we were on the wire to get our inventory turned in, Blake decided to come in at night and get it done. He had opened the Athletic Center that morning and already worked 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is personal ownership of staff like this that has made The Fort Worth Club what it is today.”

Now members have the opportunity to start their own family scuba story through The Fort Worth Club. The Athletic Center is planning now for kids and adult scuba lessons and programs to be held this June, with an option for lessons to be packaged with a scuba-friendly travel destination. Running has been part of Mike Cooke’s regular exercise routine for 25 years. The longtime Athletic Center member even has a few marathons under his belt. But in December, Cooke reached a goal that most runners only dream of – qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

Cooke had to complete a marathon under three and a half hours to qualify for his applicable age bracket, and he did so at the Tucson Marathon on December 9.

“When I crossed the line, I knew I had done it and was thrilled and incredibly happy, albeit extremely beat up and aching from the run,” Cooke said. “Finishing any marathon brings a tremendous feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment - running a Boston qualifying time, that much more so.”

Cooke says the Athletic Center has served as the starting and ending point for several of his training runs and his weight lifting and core exercises have been an important part of his regimen. The Boston Marathon will take place April 15.

Go GreekBy Jennifer Gavia RD, LD, Executive Health Program, Texas Health Resources

Greek yogurt has received a lot of attention and with good reason. Regular fruited or flavored yogurt can be high in carbs and sugar, without much protein per container. Traditional Greek yogurt is a strained yogurt that has less of the watery whey, result-ing in a thicker creamier yogurt with more protein and less sugar than regular yogurt. Below are five ways to use Greek yogurt to increase protein, decrease saturated fat, or add more nutrients to meals and snacks.

1. Use a dollop of Greek yogurt instead of sour cream on baked potatoes, chili or Mexican food.

2. At-home froyo – combine one 5.3 oz container Greek yogurt with cut-up or frozen fruit and freeze for at least an hour for a no-sugar added frozen treat.

3. Substitute Greek yogurt for mayo in tuna/egg/chicken/potato salad recipes.

4. Top oatmeal, waffles or pancakes with Greek yogurt for a protein packed breakfast

5. Mix Greek yogurt with hummus or guacamole for a creamy texture and to add protein to a healthy fat dip

sustainable Freedom and the American FuturemOnDAY, ApriL 1

SOCrATES in THE CiTYiS BACk!

Book synopsis: In all of history’s great civilizations, there has come the moment when their citizens became their own worst enemies, thinking and living at odds with the values and principles upon which their nation was built. Political analyst and social critic Os Guinness provides both historical and current evidence that suggests America is perilously close to reaching this point today. But with this alert, Guinness also offers direction and encouragement for those seeking to achieve what the country’s founding fathers predicted would be most challenging: sustainable freedom.

Conversations on the Examined Life

HOSTED BY EriC mETAxASNew York Times best-selling author

TuESDAY, ApriL 30In Big, Hot, Cheap, and Right, Grieder traces the political history of a state that was always larger than life. From its rowdy beginnings, Texas has combined a long-standing suspicion of government intrusion with a passion for business. Looking to the present, Greider assesses the unique mix of policies on issues like immigration, debt, taxes, regulation, and energy, which together have sparked a bonafide Texas Miracle of job growth. While acknowledging that it still has plenty of twenty-first-century problems to face, she finds in Texas a model of governance whose power has been drastically underestimated.

He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of London and his D.Phil in the social sciences from Oriel College, Oxford.

Since coming to the United States in 1984, he has been a Guest Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Studies and a Guest Scholar and Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution.
