Want to know how your flat front pants should be altered? Welty is unambiguous on the subject: “In the Ivy League Look, the gold standard has re-mained unchanged for a long, long time. To wit: Cuff, no break with a knife blade crease.” Welty said in his first visit this year to New Haven, a few days after the official start of spring on March 20, he was (wisely) still in winter mode. When he returns this month, it will be with spring clothing. “I have faith,” he said on the phone from Durham. That means: lighter colors and fabrics, cotton in-stead of wool. “And flashy cotton socks.” On his feet? Camp moccasins, Vans sneakers, and a pair of loafers. At Peter Beck's Village Store in Salisbury, Peter Feen said he is awaiting much of his spring merchandise. But he does have very nice sport shirts in appropri-ate spring colors from Collared Greens, at $98 apiece. They are made in the USA and have unlined button-down collars, for an informal look. Feen said he knows it's spring when the white pants come in — for Salisbury School's graduation.

For even more casual activities, such as fishing, Pe-ter Beck's has a line of Columbia shirts, made of a very breathable synthetic fabric, with a mesh lining inside and side vents built into the shirt. Plus pockets galore for stowing your stuff. The shirt keeps the wearer cool, and if it gets wet, it dries out in a hurry.Best of all, they won't break the bank at $48. Feen is a fan of Mountain Khakis ($85). Made of a can-vas-like material, they are heavier than cotton chinos and good for dealing with the brush pile. Across Main Street at Passports, a man looking to im-prove the outer self could indulge in a Josh Bach bow tie, with baseball diamonds on a green field ($45), or take a look at the World Museum Collection neck ties ($5), which are bold and colorful.Online retailers such as L.L. Bean and Lands End have some decent deals running on summer sport shirts. Lands End has Madras short sleeve shirts starting as low as $12.99, and L.L. Bean's short-sleeve seersucker shirts begin at $24.99. Plus both retailers often have coupon deals and other discounts on their websites. It pays to check regularly.

For the ultimate summer shirt — an authentic bleeding Madras (meaning you have to be careful when you wash it) — check O'Connell's in Buffalo, N.Y. This store is the Mecca of Ivy style fans, and they have found a source of Madras shirts that fade with time. They are not cheap — short-sleeve shirts are $135. But they offer the long sleeve variety — something to think about for cool evenings. Finally, I am a big fan of Lands End's cotton Drifter sweat-ers for the above-mentioned cool evenings. They come in crewneck, v-neck and vest styles, in a wide range of colors, and start at $32.

Winsted’s Northwest CT YMCA is not just about physical fitness and well-being, though these are central to its mission, director Jason Cohen says.

The Y “tries to respond to what’s out there in order to pro-vide what the community needs.” When the only adult day care center in Torrington closed, the Y’s Winsted branch opened one. Cohen says that the Winsted branch of the YMCA, which includes all of north-west Connecticut, from New Hartford west and Litchfield north to the state line, tends to focus on “social responsi-bility.” The Y operates a homeless shelter at the Winsted branch on the second floor. It has six rooms, 17 beds, and caters to families. The Y has an additional 15 single apart-ments, eleven of which are state-subsidized. In Cohen’s own words, “there is a whole world upstairs that most people don’t know about.” The Y offers a literacy program run by volunteers who also run a GED program, and an English as a Second Lan-guage program. Cohen says his job is different every day. “I run three branches – the Winsted branch, a new summer camp in Southfield, MA, and the Winchester Youth Service Bureau.” Fundraising is one of the Y’s “constant efforts.” Cohen says that the organization never wants a lack of money to be the reason someone can’t take part in a program. So, the Y does a lot of fundraisers to support programs such as youth, individual, whole-group and family counseling; a juvenile review board that gives kids “an alternative to the juvenile court system;” a supportive therapeutic summer camp, training for adults on how to prevent child sexual abuse . . . and “all sorts of great services.” All of these programs “mesh well with the vision and mis-sion of the Y,” adds Cohen. The recent “Dancing with the Stars” was one of their successful fundraisers. Then there are special events such as road races, the Freezin’ for a Reason event, in which employees sleep out in the park to raise money for the homeless shelter; involve-ment in the United Way; and finally an annual campaign where “we partner with our staff and our members, individ-uals and businesses, to gather contributions.” Last year the

Y “raised $125,000, and this year it hopes to surpass that.” Cohen says that all this work is “a team effort.” There are many ideas for activities and events that come to the table, so many perspectives and insights are shared on a consistent basis. A swim team for kids from age 6 up through 18 just competed in a regional championship in Boston. “Forty kids went there and one of those kids is now head-ing to Nationals this week.” He goes on to say that “we have our youth volleyball program with over 100 kids on differ-ent teams.” With its mission to serve the community, everything ties together for the Northwest YMCA to create what Cohen calls “a sense of family, a place for everyone.” It is that attitude, Cohen said, that inspired the Y to or-ganize a Dominican cultural festival with food, music and dancing because there is a large Dominican population in the area. “We wanted to make sure that they realized we wanted them as part of our community.”

Lakeville Journal _ Trade Secrets5"W x 11"H

For sprucing up your house, your wardrobe, or your col-lection of prosthetic limbs, nothing beats a visit to the Millerton Antiques Center, a collection of 36 dealers in

one buzzing and eclectic spot on Main Street. Clearly that was what one couple had in mind on a recent Saturday morning as they cruised the alleys stocked with paintings, lamps, buckets of tableware, gorgeously horned sheep heads gazing down on glass cases jammed with rings and brooches, stacks of white ironstone, chairs, a clutch of fur coats — one a mink, and my favorite: a naked dummy wear-ing a red fez. “My hat is for sale,” a sign on her chest reads. “I’m not.” The couple pores over piles of Oriental rugs, the kind you might place in the front entry of a nice old country house. “Lovely,” she says, pulling out a silky red stretch of carpet. “Too much,” her mate says, checking the tag hanging from a corner. And that’s the interesting thing about shopping here, says Bob Murphy, one of the four owners of the market. When goods don’t sell, the dealers cut prices. Dealers want to sell their goods, because dealers, them-selves, love to collect, Murphy says. That’s how many of them got into the business to begin with. Problem is, Murphy continued, you have to sell to keep on collecting, and, often, dealers at this market pare down prices to keep their goods moving. I found a gorgeous glass plate mounted on a sterling stand. The dealer had crossed off $45 and wrote in $30. I fig-ure I will check back in a couple of weeks to see if the price sinks to $15. Could happen I figure, from what Murphy told me. I was surrounded by treasures: A spinning topographic globe made back when there was a Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and a country called Burma: $45; tiny glass birds, just $5; “Not new nice Chinese lamps,” a ticket says: $300; a gigantic Merino sheep’s head, its long horns unwinding into

space, good for a hunting lodge one of the dealers told me, for $675; And a pair of columns, just two feet tall. I have always wanted a Doric column, even a short Doric column, but Lisa Foster, who once ran Nest, an antiques shop on Millerton’s Main Street, was selling them as a pair. She loved running her own store, she tells me, but not the daily commit-ment. So now, she has a booth in the market where, like all the other dealers, she helps customers throughout the store two days a month. I ask her how much one column would cost. She screws up her face, shakes her blonde curls, eyes the ceiling as she works it out and settles on half of what she would charge for two. Fair enough. Goods run from the practical to the bizzare, and upstairs is where some of the zanier objects are displayed, like a bright green Mexican sombrero, ribboned and sequined in gold: $20; an egg beater with a wooden handle: $10; the lid of a white ironstone soup tureen, $6; and two pairs of prosthetic legs, one of them barefoot: $100 each. What a place to shop!

If you want to build a wardrobe from vintage and second-hand shops it helps if you’re a little bit of a character. Take Lakeville Journal reporter Patrick Sullivan, who is

famously dapper. He revels in the search for treasures among the area’s second-hand shops, and from clothing websites. Patrick now has a female counterpart here at The Journal: Advertising Manager Libby (Hall) Abeel, who moved here from New York City and joined our company about four years ago. Like Patrick, Libby loves to sift through the racks and shelves of popular, local second-hand shops: The Bargain Barn in Sharon and the Quality in Kent. She also shops at Encore in Salisbury. “And it’s a consignment shop so the owner of the item gets a percentage from the sale,” she specified. “And the clothes there are more carefully selected.” A prize find from Encore: “A St. John suit.” That’s not to say she doesn’t find high-end clothes at the Quality and the Bargain Barn. “This is an affluent area,” she said, “and many of the ladies who live up here purchase high-quality designer clothing and shoes.” There is often a sense that the clothes donated to the area thrift shops are given by older folk who are ready to retire from their city jobs. Libby said she doesn’t think that’s neces-sarily true. “I’m not buying things that are 30 years old,” she said. Or things that are frayed at the cuffs and hems from heavy use. “Many times I find items that still have their price tag on them.” The clothing she finds are a mix of “city and country. I’ve found Anne Klein, that’s certainly not country. I get things from Burberry and Lilly Pulitzer. I recently bought my hus-band a London Fog raincoat. My father bought a tuxedo at the Bargain Barn for $50 and wore it to my wedding last sum-mer.” He had to have some alterations made to it, and had it done by Carol McCann at Kent Fabrics on the Kent Green.

Libby wears standard sizes for clothes and shoes and finds it easy to get items that fit without alterations, which of course keeps the cost down. During the interview for this story, she had on an oversized blue blazer from Brooks Brothers and a pair of kelly green skinny chinos from the Gap that she’d just bought at Label Shopper Plus in Amenia, next to Tractor Supply — a phenomenal source both for clothing basics such as jeans and classic shirts for men and women, and for the occasional special, brightly hued accent piece. On her feet, she was wearing bright orange duck boots. As noted, it helps to be confident and a bit of a char-acter to really pull off this vintage clothing thing. Al-though it’s not necessarily the first thing you notice about either of them, both Libby and Patrick are meticu-lously groomed. With vintage clothes, it’s easy to slip over from cheap chic to shabby chic (or just shabby). In addition to always having her hair nicely cut and colored, Libby always has her nails done and always — even when she’s wearing orange duck boots and kelly green pants — has on elegant understated earrings (on this particular day, she was wearing pearls). Along with trips to Label Shopper Plus, she also shops at the Lee outlet stores (Ralph Lauren, Brooks Broth-ers and Cole Haan are her favorites); and at the annual sales at Country Clothes in Kent and at Peter Beck’s in Salisbury, which she said are not to be missed. Estate sales are another favorite hunting ground. “I’ve found Barbour jackets for myself and for my fa-ther,” Harry Hall of Sharon, who is The Lakeville Jour-nal’s bridge correspondent. “I find things by Orvis for him. I outfit my father every year.” Does she worry that she’ll buy something he sent to the thrift shop? “No,” she said. “He never throws any-thing away.” Libby, on the other hand, clears out her closets about once a year and donates bundles of clothing to the Bar-gain Barn and the Quality (she usually doesn’t remem-ber from whence each item comes, so there is no way to know if an item is returning home, so to speak). There is something about constantly and inexpensive-ly refreshing one’s wardrobe that delights the soul and the eye. Libby also enjoys the game of searching for that special, perfect prize for her wardrobe. “It’s stimulating. It’s rewarding. And my husband enjoys it, too. It’s something we can do together on the weekend.”

There are certain ways people like to warm up their indoor environments, whether that’s at home or at work. Cozy furniture, original art-

work, books, and, if one has the know-how, plants. But it’s not everyone who can keep a houseplant (or work-plant, if you prefer) healthy. According to www.gardeners.com, there are five basic steps to follow to keep houseplants in good shape: 1. Inspect plants before bringing them indoors. If they show signs of pests or disease, cure the problem before you infect your other indoor plants.

2. Avoid placing plants in trouble spots, such as near heat or air conditioning ducts, on television or a radiator or between curtains and a frosty window. 3. Provide the correct light. Plants requiring full sun should live in a south-facing window. East-and west-facing windows have moderate sun. North windows have very little sun. 4. It’s important to remember that in winter, heated air is dry. You can provide a little extra humidity by setting pots on a pebble tray and misting them. 5. Place the plants in sterile soil. That will reduce prob-lems with fungus, gnats and other soil-borne diseases. So, that should help anyone who wants to bring a little green inside. But what about inspiration for those who know absolutely nothing about plants? Sadly, I count myself in this category. A great place to start is at your local florist or garden center. In Millerton you can stop by Kamilla’s Floral Boutique or Country Gardeners Florist for some lovely plants, as well as some time-tested advice. Always helpful, Agway is another great place to pick up a houseplant, soil and fertilizer, as well as some great tips. Much of the plant-ing paraphernalia one might need can also be found at Herrington’s. There’s also Daisi Hill Farm and the Mil-lerton Nursery and Garden Shop, not to mention McEn-roe Organic Farm, for the plants themselves. Even the supermarkets carry houseplants, so there’s no excuse not to pick one up when you find a few extra dollars in your pocket. Neighboring towns have their own florists and garden centers to supply both the plants and the knowl-edge of how to care for them. If you have pets, make sure that the plants you buy are not poisonous. That’s especially important with cats and dogs that like to eat everything in sight, as many plants are toxic.

Some hearty varieties might be a good place to start for beginners. According to www.today.com, the 15 most resilient are: Pothos, Aloe, Spider Plant, English Ivy, Jade Plant, Rubber Tree, Diffenbachia, Peace Lily, Snake Plant, Ficus, Heart-Leaf Philodendron, Peperomia, Shamrock Plant, Fiddle-Leaf Fig and Areca Palm. Instructions on how to care for these plants and others can be found just about anywhere these days. The Internet provides a wealth of resources, and bookstores and even hardware stores where seeds are sold often have great reference guides. Check our your local library, too, for tips on how to care for houseplants. And in this region we’re especially fortunate because we have the Cornell Coopera-tive Extension Dutchess County (CCEDC). Its Farm and Home Center is right in Millbrook, and it offers master gardener classes and seminars throughout the growing season. To reach the CCEDC call 845-677-8223. All that’s left now is to buy a plant that suits your fancy, get your hands on a watering can, find a sunny (maybe not-so-sunny, depending on what the plant is) spot and then get ready to share some love with your new house mate. There’s so much to gain from having a houseplant — they can help de-stress and purify your home — and they look pretty to boot. Go on now, don’t be shy. Get yourself an indoor plant and watch something beautiful grow. p

Spring has sprung!

One of my spring cleaning chores, when I was a teenager, was helping Dad spruce up the dinosaur tracks. Yes. Really.

The first dinosaur tracks discovered in North America were in the Connecticut River valley in South Hadley, MA. Pliny Moody, 12, was plowing a field on the family farm when he dug into a rock slab that had unusual marks on it. Track marks. He took the slab home and it became a doorstep. Pliny and Dr. Elihu Dwight, who eventually purchased the stone from Moore, called them “the tracks of Noah’s raven.” This was in 1802, mind you, when the logical conclu-sion as to the tracks’ source was Biblical. Noah on the ark released a raven, it flew off and never returned. They sur-mised it made it to the Connecticut River valley, where it meandered up a muddy river bank, not knowing that geophysical circumstances would harden those tracks into perpetuity.

Another “scholar” took an interest in the tracks in 1867, one John F. Chambers, who befriended Moody, cata-logued the tracks and offered to purchase them for the British Museum for $5,000. He turned out to be a hoaxer. He was arrested before he could complete a deal — though he had no money with which to pay Moody. Dwight, on the other hand, was a sensible man to have the tracks. He passed them along to Professor Edward Hitchcock, and today they are in the collection at Am-herst College. In the early days some called them “the giant turkeys of Prof. Hitchcock.” More tracks were found in nearby Turners Falls, MA. Someone soon noticed that it was funny some of these bird tracks also had dragging tail marks. Maybe they weren’t birds after all. Decades later another set of tracks in the region, in

Ice Carving CompetitionThe conditions were almost perfect for the 7th

Annual Salisbury Ice Carving Competition held last February 9th, the Saturday of the ski jumps, on the green of the White Hart Inn. A light snow fell throughout the day to add a visual wintry touch, and the lack of sunshine (ice’s mortal en-emy) helped preserve the competitors’ 300-pound ice blocks. But the 34-degree temperature softened the ice enough to make it difficult for the carvers to fashion sharp details in their sculptures. Still, the finished works were spectacular in both the amateur and professional divisions.

In the increasingly competitive amateur divi-sion, Justin Reich from Newington, Conn. cap-tured third place with his “Surfing Penguins”. Hometown favorite Jean Saliter took second place with her “Lombardi Trophy” and also won the People’s Choice Award. Howard Freeman from East Hartford, Conn., won first place honors with his “Lighthouse View” sculpture.

The sculptures in the professional division

never cease to amaze. Fourth place honors went to J.P. Hedbavney from Branchville, N.J. (J.P. is also co-chairman of the competition) with his “Flying Geese.” Gary Costa from Burlington, Conn., a con-sistent top-three finisher, took third place with “Bal-ancing Pixie.” “Thor” was the title of the sculpture by second-place winner Richard Daley from Mas-tic Beach, N.Y. And Chad Gasiorek from Shohola, Pa., won first place with “Fighting Eagles.”

The annual ice carv-ing competition is made possible through the generosity of lead spon-sor Klemm Real Estate, as well as the White Hart Inn, the Salisbury Winter Sports Association and Trimp Ice Art.

north Holyoke, came to light when workmen were improv-ing Route 5 in 1935. Three types of carnivorous dinosaurs were discerned, one a theropod with 3-inch tracks, another an Anchisauripus sillimani. The third was a Eubrontes giganteus with 11- to 13-inch tracks. The larger beasts apparently trav-eled in packs. There’s also indication a Batrachopus (basal crocodilian) waddled by. The Trustees of Reservations, a Bay State land conservation organization, took stewardship of the tracks at this location and they are open to the public daily. Look for the sign on the river side of Route 5, heading toward Northampton. I recently revisited these tracks, showing them to my wife. I had been a very episodic caretaker of the tracks, I explained to her. When I was a teenager, my father was a superinten-dent for several Trustees properties, including Dinosaur Foot-prints. We traveled there to pick up litter, curry the old gravel driveway and trim back the sumac bushes. There are 134 tracks showing in Holyoke, and who knows

how many more are under the earth and roadway, left unseen and untouched in the sand-stone for eons? You can walk the same steps the dinosaurs walked, just don’t take any souvenirs. If you make it to Holyoke and want still more, there’s Nash Dinosaur Track Site and Rock Shop on Route 116 in South Hadley, open in warm months. It’s located about a mile from Pliny Moody’s old place. These tracks were found by Carlton Nash in 1933. Nash

had taken classes in geology at Amherst College and went looking to find his own. He found some, but kept quiet until he could purchase the land in 1939. He removed and sold tracks to collectors but eventually quit his job at Ho-lyoke Water Power Co. to open the private preserve, which he called Nash Dinosaurland. His son Komell Nash took over in 1997. Other tracks are to be found at Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill, CT, south of Hart-ford, beneath a geodesic dome. These tracks were bared dur-ing earth digging for a state

building in 1966. An equipment operator flipped a slab of sandstone to reveal tracks with three toes. It is now one of the largest on-site displays of dinosaur tracks anywhere, made by Eubrontes and Dilophosaurus. Even more tracks were dis-covered in the same communi-ty, same circumstances (con-struction of a new health-care facility) in 2006. As one looks at dinosaur tracks, the imagi-nation begins to spin. Where did they come from? Where were they going? Were they hunting? Playing? Running for their lives?
