ICTs and the Millennium Development GoalsA United Nations Perspective

This book attempts to create awareness about the UN-MDGs and how various ICT can be harnessed to appeal to different demographics. Current empirical evidence suggests that MDG awareness is relatively low particularly in developed coun-tries, and that the levels of MDG awareness vary considerable across socioeconomic variables or demographics from United Nations perspective. It also examines how ICT can be used to bring about technical and social innovations strengthen livelihoods, support economic development, water and climate resilience and improve the educa-tion and health sectors and enhance development opportunities. Several studies are highlighted that reinforce the view that government support and private sector expertise and funding are important factors in ICT-based e-government solutions in developing countries.

Robust Subspace Estimation Using Low-Rank OptimizationTheory and Applications

Recovering the low-rank structure of a linear subspace using a small set of corrupted examples has recently been made feasible through substan-tial advances in the area of matrix completion and nuclear-norm minimization. Such low-rank structures appear in certain conditions heavily in computer vision, for instance, in the frames of a video, the camera motion, and a picture of a build-ing façade. In this book, we discuss several formu-lations and extensions of low-rank optimization, and demonstrate how recovering the underlying basis and detecting the corresponding outliers allow us to solve fundamental computer vision problems, including video denoising, background subtraction, action detection, and complex event recognition.

Family Firms and Private EquityFamily firms are of particular importance for many economies. We know little about family firm buyouts and how they are different from non-family firm buyouts. Oliver Ahlers investigates this under-researched topic. After a comprehensive literature review on family firm buyouts, the focus of his book is on the key steps of the investment process such as family firm valuation and negotia-tions between PE investors and family sellers. Ad-ditionally, it is investigated how “soft factors” such as trust, reputation or commitment could play an important role when PE and family firms interact. Throughout the book, differences between family and non-family firm buyouts are highlighted.

Management of Permanent ChangeIn the current times of more frequent crises and ever shortening innovation cycles, the manage-ment of change has become a crucial task of survival. While it is not a new topic in business research, the developments of the last decade have posed many new challenges for the change management of firms and organizations and have thus also raised many new questions for academic research in business administration, which the present book turns to deepen. Its particular focus is on disruptive change including its driving forces as well as effective and sustainable management.

Firm Heterogeneity, Labor Markets and International TradeEvidence from Danish Matched Employer-Employee Data

The new macroeconomics is about distributions and flows, rather than points and intersections. Market frictions imply that the search for trading partners is time consuming and costly. Conse-quently, market participants flow between eco-nomic states, and trades occur at dispersed prices. This generates motives for continued search for better market opportunities, and for bargaining between potential trading partners.

Earnings Accruals and Real Activities Management around Initial Public OfferingsEvidence from Specific Industries

The beginning of the new millennium was charac-terized by company scandals in accounting around the world. A transparent and fair presentation of financial statements is beneficial for capital market participants. Especially around initial public of-ferings different incentives of these players exist to influence financial statements in diverse aspects. Therefore, studies of earnings management try to identify abnormal behavior. This thesis covers ad-ditional aspects to shed light on substantial drivers of discretionary reporting behavior around going public. Factors like influence on real activities, industry affiliation, and specific years in the IPO process add further insight to this theoretical and practical topic. The dependence on these factors is high and confirm that company specifics are important for interpretation of results.

This book demonstrates the use of fuzzy logic for classification and segmentation in marketing campaigns. Based on practical experience as a data analyst and on theoretical studies as a researcher, the author explains fuzzy classification, inductive logic and the concept of likelihood and introduces a blend of Bayesian and Fuzzy Set approaches, allowing reasonings on fuzzy sets that are derived by inductive logic. By application of this theory, the book guides the reader towards a gradual seg-mentation of customers which can enhance return on targeted marketing campaigns. The algorithms presented can be used for visualization, selection and prediction. The book shows how fuzzy logic can complement customer analytics by introduc-ing fuzzy target groups.

The Media Convergence Handbook sheds light on the complexity of media convergence and the related business challenges. Approaching the topic from a managerial, technological as well as end-consumer perspective, it acts as a reference book and educational resource in the field. Media con-vergence at business level may imply transforming business models and using multiplatform content production and distribution tools. However, it is shown that the implementation of convergence strategies can only succeed when expectations and aspirations of every actor involved are taken into account. Media consumers, content producers and managers face different challenges in the process of media convergence.

Innovation and Teaching TechnologiesNew Directions in Research, Practice and Policy

This book focus on organizational changes that are taking place in higher education. Universities are currently experiencing a period of change and restructuring into what is known as the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). EHEA represents a process of educational reform based on three types of transformations: structural, curricular and organizational. The integration of universi-ties in this new EHEA is bringing conceptual and methodological changes not just to the structure of university education, but also to the teaching-learning processes and the conditions under which they take place. EHEA is prompting a change in the teaching model towards the consideration of students as the main actors in the educational pro-cess. This change requires new teaching strategies where students are asked to resolve problems with tools provided by the teacher.

The Impacts of Biofuels on the Economy, Environment, and PovertyA Global Perspective

Interest in biofuels began with oil shocks in the 1970’s, but the more rapid development and consumption of biofuel industry in recent years has been primarily driven by mandates, subsidies, climate change concerns, emissions targets and energy security. From 2004 to 2006, fuel ethanol grew by 26% and biodiesel grew by 172%. As biofuel production continues to expand, invest-ments in capacity expansion and research and development have been made. The 2008 food crisis emphasized the need to re-examine biofuel consequences.

Lectures on Formal and Rigid GeometryThe aim of this work is to offer a concise and self-contained ‘lecture-style’ introduction to the theory of classical rigid geometry established by John Tate, together with the formal algebraic geometry approach launched by Michel Raynaud. These Lectures are now viewed commonly as an ideal means of learning advanced rigid geometry, regardless of the reader’s level of background. Despite its parsimonious style, the presentation illustrates a number of key facts even more exten-sively than any other previous work. This Lecture Notes Volume is a revised and slightly expanded version of a preprint that appeared in 2005 at the University of Münster’s Collaborative Research Center “Geometrical Structures in Mathematics”.

Neural field theory has a long-standing tradition in the mathematical and computational neurosci-ences. Beginning almost 50 years ago with seminal work by Griffiths and culminating in the 1970ties with the models of Wilson and Cowan, Nunez and Amari, this important research area experienced a renaissance during the 1990ties by the groups of Ermentrout, Robinson, Bressloff, Wright and Haken. Since then, much progress has been made in both, the development of mathematical and numerical techniques and in physiological refine-ment und understanding.

Geometric, Analytic and Probabilistic Approaches to Dynamics in Negative CurvatureThe work consists of two introductory courses, developing different points of view on the study of the asymptotic behaviour of the geodesic flow, namely: the probabilistic approach via martin-gales and mixing (by Stéphane Le Borgne); the semi-classical approach, by operator theory and resonances (by Frédéric Faure and Masato Tsujii). The contributions aim to give a self-contained introduction to the ideas behind the three differ-ent approaches to the investigation of hyperbolic dynamics. The first contribution focus on the con-vergence towards a Gaussian law of suitably nor-malized ergodic sums (Central Limit Theorem).

Multivariate Calculus and GeometryMultivariate calculus can be understood best by combining geometric insight, intuitive arguments, detailed explanations and mathematical reasoning. This textbook has successfully followed this pro-gramme. It additionally provides a solid descrip-tion of the basic concepts, via familiar examples, which are then tested in technically demanding situations. In this new edition the introductory chapter and two of the chapters on the geometry of surfaces have been revised. Some exercises have been replaced and others provided with expanded solutions. Familiarity with partial derivatives and a course in linear algebra are essential prerequisites for readers of this book. Multivariate Calculus and Geometry is aimed primarily at higher level undergraduates in the mathematical sciences. The inclusion of many practical examples involving problems of several variables will appeal to math-ematics, science and engineering students.

Spectral Clustering, Ordering and RankingStatistical Learning with Matrix Factorizations

Data mining methods are essential for analyz-ing the ever-growing massive quantities of data. Data clustering is one of the key data mining techniques. In recent years, spectral clustering has been developed as an effective approach to data clustering. It starts with well-motivated objec-tive functions; optimization eventually leads to eigenvectors as the solutions, with many clear and interesting algebraic properties. Spectral cluster-ing, ordering and ranking extensively uses matrix-based methods and algorithms. This approach is amenable to vigorous analysis and is benefiting from a treasury of knowledge of linear algebra and applied mathematics accumulated through the centuries. This exposition presents recent advances in this new subfield.

Mathematical Oncology 2013Working in mathematical oncology is a slow and difficult process, requiring the acquisition of a spe-cial mindset that goes well beyond the usual appli-cations of mathematics and physics. Mathematical Oncology 2013 presents the most significant recent results in the field of mathematical oncol-ogy, highlighting the work of world-class research teams. This innovative volume emphasizes the way different researchers see and approach problems, not just technical results. It covers many of the most important topics related to the mathematical modeling of tumors, including: Free boundaries. Tumors are growing entities, as such their spatial mean field description involves free boundary problems.Constitutive equations. Tumors should be described as nontrivial porous media.Stochastic dynamics. At the end of anti-cancer therapy, a small number of cells remain, whose dynamics is thus inherently stochastic.

Phase Separation Coupled with Damage ProcessesAnalysis of Phase Field Models in Elastic Media

Christian Heinemann explores a unifying model which couples phase separation and damage pro-cesses in a system of partial differential equations. The model has technological applications to solder materials where interactions of both phenomena have been observed and cannot be neglected for a realistic description. The author derives the equa-tions in a thermodynamically consistent frame-work and presents suitable weak formulations for various types of this coupled system. In the main part, he proves the existence of weak solutions and investigates degenerate limits.

Potential TheoryPotential Theory presents a clear path from calculus to classical potential theory and beyond, with the aim of moving the reader into the area of mathematical research as quickly as possible. The subject matter is developed from first principles using only calculus. Commencing with the inverse square law for gravitational and electromagnetic forces and the divergence theorem, the author develops methods for constructing solutions of Laplace’s equation on a region with prescribed values on the boundary of the region. The latter half of the book addresses more advanced material aimed at those with the background of a senior undergraduate or beginning graduate course in real analysis. Starting with solutions of the Dirich-let problem subject to mixed boundary conditions on the simplest of regions, methods of morphing such solutions onto solutions of Poisson’s equa-tion on more general regions are developed using diffeomorphisms and the Perron-Wiener-Brelot method, culminating in application to Brownian motion.

k-Schur Functions and Affine Schubert CalculusThis book gives an introduction to the very active field of combinatorics of affine Schubert calculus, explains the current state of the art, and states the current open problems. Affine Schubert calculus lies at the crossroads of combinatorics, geometry, and representation theory. Its modern develop-ment is motivated by two seemingly unrelated directions. One is the introduction of k-Schur functions in the study of Macdonald polynomial positivity, a mostly combinatorial branch of sym-metric function theory. The other direction is the study of the Schubert bases of the (co)homology of the affine Grassmannian, an algebro-topological formulation of a problem in enumerative geom-etry.

The Magic RingSystems Thinking Approach to Control Systems

This book presents a gradual path toward “edu-cating” readers in understanding how Control Systems truly operate and in recognizing, simulat-ing and improving them in all fields of activity. Starting from the hypothesis that knowledge of Control Systems is not only a technical fact but also represents a discipline – that is, “A discipline is a developmental path for acquiring certain skills or competencies. (…) To practice a discipline is to be a lifelong learner. You “never arrive”; you spend your life mastering disciplines.” (Senge, 2006, p. 10) – Piero Mella has set the objective of making Control Systems a topic that is, in a certain sense, simple and attractive by turning to the effective symbolism typical of Systems Thinking models and avoiding too technical and formal a treatment of the subject. Thus readers should know that this is not an engineering, physics, biology or econom-ics text, nor a mathematics one either.

The Philosophy of Mathematics and Logic in the 1920s and 1930s in PolandThe aim of this book is to present and analyze philosophical conceptions concerning mathemat-ics and logic as formulated by Polish logicians, mathematicians and philosophers in the 1920s and 1930s. It was a remarkable period in the history of Polish science, in particular in the history of Polish logic and mathematics. Therefore, it is justified to ask whether and to what extent the development of logic and mathematics was accompanied by a philosophical reflection. We try to answer those questions by analyzing both works of Polish logi-cians and mathematicians who have a philosophi-cal temperament as well as their research practice.

Janus-Faced ProbabilityThe problem of probability interpretation was long overlooked before exploding in the 20th century, when the frequentist and subjectivist schools for-malized two conflicting conceptions of probability. Beyond the radical followers of the two schools, a circle of pluralist thinkers tends to reconcile the opposing concepts. The author uses two theorems in order to prove that the various interpretations of probability do come into opposition and can be used in different contexts.

Twisted Teichmüller CurvesThese notes introduce a new class of alge-braic curves on Hilbert modular surfaces. These curves are called twisted Teichmüller curves, because their construction is very reminiscent of Hirzebruch-Zagier cycles. These new objects are analyzed in detail and their main properties are described. In particular, the volume of twisted Teichmüller curves is calculated and their compo-nents are partially classified.

Invariant Probabilities of Transition FunctionsThe structure of the set of all the invariant prob-abilities and the structure of various types of individual invariant probabilities of a transition function are two topics of significant interest in the theory of transition functions, and are studied in this book. The results obtained are useful in er-godic theory and the theory of dynamical systems, which, in turn, can be applied in various other areas (like number theory). They are illustrated using transition functions defined by flows, semi-flows, and one-parameter convolution semigroups of probability measures. In this book, all results on transition probabilities that have been published by the author between 2004 and 2008 are extended to transition functions. The proofs of the results obtained are new. For transition functions that satisfy very general conditions the book describes an ergodic decomposition that provides relevant information on the structure of the corresponding set of invariant probabilities.
