Anchored in ChristOn Friday, November 4, the faculty and sta participated in their annual fall retreat. e theme of the retreat this year was “Anchored in Christ.”

e day started o with a beautiful prayer service, followed by a speaker from Catholic Relief Services. Aer that, there was a quick trivia game centered on facts about TCHS, and then, as teams, they participated in several acts of community service. When the day was over the faculty and sta had made nine casseroles for Our Daily Bread, 134 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for Sarah’s Hope, twelve blankets for the SPCA/Project Linus, twelve rosaries for soldiers, four batches of cookies for Asylee Women, handmade and decorated cards for retired sisters of St. Francis, cleaned up our TCHS gardens and joined our neighbors to help clean up their neighborhood by lling over a dozen trash bags!

Community Serviceroughout the year, Catholic High students participate in many community service activities. Again this year, members of Student Council facilitated several activities during the holiday season.

For many years, it has been a tradition to participate in the Festival of Trees established by the Kennedy Krieger Institute. When the tree gets sold, the funds go to children with disabilities who are served by the Kennedy Krieger Institute.

In addition, Student Council runs our Annual Adopt a Family Christmas Project. As a school community we adopted 20 families from St. Gregory the Great Parish in Baltimore City. Each homeroom class as well as the faculty and sta provided gis,

a Christmas meal and a $20.00 gi card for a turkey to each of the adopted families. With the help of our Student Council and additional volunteer students and teachers, all gis were wrapped and tagged and all food items were packaged for each family. e next morning, these gis were delivered by our Cub buses to St. Gregory’s for distribution.

Additional community service activities during the holiday season included our cheerleaders’ participation in Wreaths Across America, and our National English Honor Society members’ participation in Operation Gratitude in which they wrote letters to active and veteran U.S. military members, as well as rst responders to be included in care packages.

Art Students Participate in the Memory Projecte Memory Project is a unique initiative in which art students create portraits for abandoned, orphaned and neglected children and teens from around the world to let them know they are not forgotten. e National Art Honor Society students received 25, 8x10 photos to work from to create a special portrait for the children in locations throughout Colombia. e “Memory Project” portraits became a vehicle of compassion to an unknown child.

Senior Serves as Page to the House of Delegates

Senior Veronica Woodring had the honor of spending time in Annapolis in the General Assembly as a Legislative Page. Each year, 105 high school seniors in Maryland are given the opportunity to learn about their state’s legislative process rsthand by serving as student pages in the Senate and House of Delegates during the annual session of the Maryland General Assembly. A page’s duties include updating legislators’ bill books, answering the phone, assisting State House visitors, distributing materials on the oor to members, and running myriad errands.

explained, “Being able to connect with the children from the Memory Project in Colombia was truly a blessing. It is amazing to see how much my artwork can impact someone’s life in such a positive way. I’m happy to be able to give such a special, sentimental gi to the children and see the happiness it brings to their faces.”

Julia Stanitski ’17 described the experience as special and personal. “e Memory Project was so special to me and my classmates because it allowed us to become very closely connected with the children we were drawing. rough the months we were working on the portraits, we came to appreciate the dierences in these Columbian children and know each and every one of them personally.”

Our visual arts teacher, Mrs. Elaine Hummel, heard about the Memory Project through her School Arts subscription last fall. Since then, our National Arts Honors Society students have created portraits for the “Memory Project” every year. “I wanted to participate in a project that would make a dierence in a world that seems so overwhelmed by negativity. I wanted to show our students how small things can mean so much to a child half way around the world by using their gis of artistic ability,” Mrs. Hummel shared.

Beautiful Me Week 2017On Tuesday, February 21 we began our traditional “Beautiful Me Week,” a week long initiative which was created to help raise awareness of eating disorders and body image issues. It’s also a week where we completely embraced the idea of loving ourselves. e theme for the entire week was “Beauty in everyBODY.” Each day then had a dierent focus and activity associated with it to encourage positivity and positive self image.

Tuesday was “Take a Compliment Tuesday.” Posters were hung throughout the hallways of Catholic High with compliments on them. Students, faculty and sta were encouraged to take a compliment o of the posters for either themselves or to encourage another.

Wednesday was “Work it Wednesday.” During Common Homeroom, students were given a template (similar to a gingerbread man) and asked to decorate it with positive mantras, stickers, etc. ey could either hang it outside of their homerooms or take it with them each day as a reminder to think positive about themselves!

ursday was “Trash Your Insecurities ursday.” Slips of paper were given out during homeroom for students to write down one of their insecurities. ey were then instructed to “trash them” throughout the day by putting them in the trash can outside of the main oce.

Friday was “Fearless Friday” and focused on taking a moment to breathe and to be yourself! Students, faculty and sta were encouraged to dress down in purple in support of those who are dealing with eating disorders and low body image/low self esteem.

Who Won the TCHS Mission Award for the 2016-2017 School Year?

Catholic High held its annual Employee Recognition Liturgy on ursday, May 4 in honor of our 56 employees for their ministry in education at e Catholic High School of Baltimore. Reverend Ron Zoubek presided over the liturgy and members of the faculty/sta served as greeters, ushers, cross bearers, candle bears, oertory, Eucharistic ministers, and the choir.

During this time, we recognized the recipient of the Mission Award which is given each year to an employee who exemplies Catholic High’s Franciscan identity and values. is year’s Mission Award was given to Mr. Steve Cole!

Mr. Cole was described by his colleagues as someone who constantly goes above and beyond the requirements, working countless extra hours throughout the school year and summer. He exemplied the mission of Catholic High and challenged his students to give their best. Mr. Cole was well-respected and admired for all that he did for Catholic High as a department chair, moderator of It’s Academic and the Robotics Team and coordinator of the STEM program, and he truly encourages his students to let their light shine.

Mr. Cole sadly passed away at the end of the school year. He will truly be missed and we are thankful for the time we had with him here at Catholic High.

On May 12, 2017 we celebrated the Blessed Mother Mary with our continued tradition of the May Crowning prayer service. The morning began with a breakfast reception for Alumnae, Seniors and their parents. Sr. Mary Kathryn Dougherty, OSF and Dr. Barbara D. Nazelrod then presided over the ceremony.

In keeping with Catholic High’s tradition, Miss Catholic High, Maria Kelly ‘17, was honored with the crowning of Mary. Maria was chosen as Miss Catholic High on May 10 for consistently displaying academic excellence, responsible leadership, and Christian community service over the past four years at Catholic High.

Maria stated, “Being named Miss. Catholic High was one of, if not the, greatest honors I received during my high school career. It was such a blessing to be able to have crowned the Blessed Mother, who had such strong faith and love for God and others. As I prepare to graduate with the title of Miss Catholic High, I will have that special connection to Mary and be able to go out in the world with her example as a guide.”

Each member of Maria’s court also played a special role in the crowning of Mary and bore witness to this special moment. The court included our Freshman of the Year, Olivia Russell, Sophomore of the Year, Erika Maher, and Junior of the Year, Heather Bertling.

e society is named for the last letter in the Hebrew alphabet that resembles a cross. It is a symbol that St. Francis of Assisi cherished. Because e Catholic High School of Baltimore is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia and both are committed to Franciscan values and mission, the Tau holds special signicance to our community. It has long been recognized as a Franciscan symbol of genuine hope and response in trust to the faithfulness of God. e Tau is a sign of ongoing conversion, the seal of the Kingdom of God, and a call to the service of others.

We invite you to include Catholic High in your estate plans and join this society of committed and honorable benefactors. For more information, contact the Oce of Institutional Advancement at 410.732.6200, ext. 243.
