SUBROSAWRITTEN & DIRECTED BY DAVID LEDDY

A gothic Victorian promenade show through the

secret backstage spaces of the Citizens Theatre.

Out of the shadows comes a motley crew

of sopranos, hoofers and wig-masters.

They tell a haunting, mournful and darkly

comic tale of yet another chorus girl

burning to death beneath the stage while

the show carried on above her head. Can

somebody put a stop to these incidents?

Will there be a bloodthirsty coup or a red

velvet revolution? The management are

literally getting away with murder…

Sub Rosa has been specially created for

the Citizens by David Leddy, who has

been described as a “theatrical maverick”

(Financial Times) and “one of the most

interesting dramatic writers on the

Scottish scene” (The Scotsman). This

promenade show will take an audience

of just 15 people at a time through the

backstage areas of the theatre.

Cast includes: Cora Bissett, Angela

Darcy, Louise Ludgate, David Magowan,

Alison Peebles & Finlay Welsh.

Tickets strictly limited, advanced

booking highly recommended.

University lecturer Frank needs to earn

some extra money. He’s bored teaching

ungrateful undergraduates and prefers

to reflect on his life and career failings

through a whisky glass. Rita, a working-

class hairdresser not afraid to speak

her mind, has discovered a passion

for higher education. She just needs

someone to get her through her exams.

Frank attempts to teach his unorthodox

student to appreciate literature and

they embark on a journey of self-

discovery which turns both their worlds

upside down.

Educating Rita is a modern classic

which has enjoyed worldwide success

including the award-winning 1983 film.

One of the most successful

playwrights of his generation, Willy

Russell has also written Shirley

Valentine, Stags and Hens, Our Day Out

and the musical Blood Brothers.

Helene Alving is about to dedicate an

orphanage she has built in memory of

her dead husband. For years she put

up with his infidelity for fear of being

shunned by the community. Now her

beloved son has returned home from

Paris, but he brings with him a deadly

secret and her carefully constructed

façade is in danger of being destroyed.

Ibsen puts society under the microscope

in this fascinating portrayal of a family

haunted by revelations of the moral

corruptions in its past.

One of Ibsen’s most powerful and

controversial works, Ghosts is still

hauntingly relevant today.

A new adaptation of Ayrshire novelist

Andrew O’Hagan’s Booker Prize

nominated book.

Be Near Me is a captivating and moving

story about love, morality and regret,

told through the experiences of an

Oxford-educated Catholic priest. Father

David is assigned to a new parish in a

crippled Scottish town on the Ayrshire

coast where sectarianism runs rife.

Drifting away from his peers in the town,

he is drawn to Mark and Lisa, a troubled

teenage couple who attend the nearby

school. As events take a perilous

direction, Father David’s infatuation

splinters his life into pieces.

Be Near Me is adapted by the

celebrated Scottish actor Ian McDiarmid

(Star Wars) who also appears in the

central role of Father David. The cast

also includes Blythe Duff (Taggart) and

is directed by the National Theatre of

Scotland’s John Tiffany, who directed

the renowned Black Watch.

Based on Angela Carter’s The Lady

of the House of Love.

A story of love, life and death, a twisted

Sleeping Beauty with the feel of a gothic

fantasy. Combining dance, opera and

physical theatre, Les Amoureux is a

sensual tale of purity and damage.

and status that only Vijay can provide?
