Here’s how Sun Coast, a regional general insurance agency, worked with Sprint to make a major technological leap into advanced insurance off erings.

Who is Sun Coast, and what makes you different from most insurers?“We’re a general insurance agency in Laguna Hills, California. And like most general agencies, we operate on shoestring budgets. But unlike most, we’re willing to be first to the market with innovative new platforms. That’s where

What kind of provider did you look for in bringing this initiative to life? “First and foremost, we needed a partner who could deliver the variables that we were using in our algorithm to tier and price our product. We looked at a mobile

handset solution, but couldn’t arrive at one that gave us full confidence. So we turned our sights to a hard-ware vendor that could operate within our economic constraints.”

“Out of all of the providers we considered, only Sprint and Modus were truly willing to recognize the challenges of a general agency’s economics. There were other providers who wanted to work with us, but within constraints of their own pricing structures.

“Sprint brought us a total package through their Sprint® Driver Development Solutions portfolio. We didn’t have to put it together piecemeal and worry about trying to keep all of the separate parts up and running ourselves. The great thing about Sprint’s

solution is that it enables our product via their nearly ubiquitous, high-performance 2G wireless network. Sprint also brought in their trusted enabler, Modus, for the physical equipment and analytics capabilities that we needed.

“Sprint and Modus structured a solution that allowed us to start slowly, then ramp up and build with them. That allowed us to roll out a program in a way that was far superior to everybody else. We’re greatly appreciative of everything they did for us.”

Why did you choose Sprint and their solution provider, Modus?

“Sprint did such a great job in helping us bring insurance telematics to market … I know that when I jump on the phone and ask for a favor to get something done, they’ll be on it, and probably do more than I ever thought to ask for.”

What challenges did you overcome with the help of Sprint and Modus?“Sprint managed and administered the entire project. Without them, we probably wouldn’t have hit our time lines. “Modus was instrumental in working with the device manufacturer to make sure that the metrics we needed were calibrated accurately.

“Another challenge was publishing data to our consumer portal. Most vendors simply collect driver data

and force the carrier to aggregate that data into detail that can be appended to a policy.

“Sprint and Modus created a system to send us the data in a clean, summarized package. So it was easy for us to append the data to the policy record, do the endorsement, and then add the appropriate discount for

each driver.”

What excites you most about what you’ve been able to accomplish? And what’s next? “The level of innovative technology we’ve been able to implement in a short time frame has been phenomenal.

“Now we are talking with Sprint and Modus about a mobile solution for the consumer portal. Pretty soon we’ll be able to give policyholders immediate feedback on their driving data and potential discounts.

“The other thing is a test drive app that consumers can put on their smartphones. Once the app generates enough data we can tell them, ‘Hey, you might be about to earn an X% discount. Would you be interested in talking to an agent?’

“We’re bullish on what we’ve been able to accomplish so far. Sprint and Modus have been great in helping us get to where we are today.”

“I guess because Sprint did such a great job in helping us bring telematics to market, I never thought twice about it. Sprint’s always been there to support us without hesitation. “I know that when I jump on the phone and ask for a favor to get something done, they’ll be on it, and probably do more than I ever thought to ask for.

“I think the way you measure Sprint is you sometimes forget that you’re working with them because they make everything so easy.”

What’s it like having Sprint as a part of your team?

“Agents are taking a diff erent look at us now. We’re getting to be known as the innovative, technologically advanced insurer in our market.

“Price-wise, our product is now better positioned than conventional insurance, and we’re working on a real-time rating system that will show the agents our rates every time they quote. I think our prospects for increased salesare looking very good.
