Children will be building on their knowledge of multiplication, by exploring the 11 times tables through partitioning and grouping.

Grouping = when we know how many is in each group and we create groups of that size. For example, 3 x 12 means 3 groups of 12.

2 x 11 means 2 groups of 11 objects.

Questioning to ask your child to aid learning:Can you partition 11 and 12 into tens and ones? If you know 11 x 10 is equal to 110, how can I use this to solve 11 x 11? What repeated addition strategy can you use for the 11 times tables?

Learning Activities:Children to fill in the gaps:

If 2 x 11 is the same as 2 x 10 + 2 x 1, how could you explain 4 x 11? Can you draw a picture representation of 4 x 11 using doughnuts? How can you partition 4 x 11 using your 10 times tables and your 1 times table? Draw a picture representation of grouping and partitioning of 6 x 11.

Partition 12 into tens and ones. Using this partitioning, solve using number sentences (sums) and grouping to solve 2 x 12.

Extension: If your child is showing secure understanding of this or if you want to extend your child’s learning further, your child can complete this reasoning task:
