I am looking forward with great excitement and faith to being in shared ministry with you at Sun Prairie United Methodist Church! We are in a season of ‘goodbyes’ and ‘hellos’ and I am anticipating our ‘hellos’ this summer. Following the example of Jesus as the ‘lead runner,’ I see my role as your lead pastor to intentionally guide, encourage, coach, mentor, teach, and support you and others in experiencing the transforming love of God. I will work to do that by consistently casting out our mission and vision to invite and welcome people to be committed and compassionate followers of Jesus Christ through worship, spiritual growth, fellowship and service to others as a Reconciling Congregation. I will work to draw upon one another’s gifts, to listen, to pay attention, and to add a dose of humor or laughter when and where appropriate. they run in smaller groups, they give the best they have to offer, and they are coached and encouraged by mentors, friends, and spectators along the course. Are we willing to put ourselves on the starting line? Are we willing to get caught by the vision and lost in the best we have to offer? Will we invite others into the race? Will we run together, following the example God has set before us in Jesus the Christ? I invite us to think about the race we are running and how together as a faith community, with God’s help, we can make the run easier for others along the way. Blessings,

Jenny

The Board of Discipleship annually presents a clergy and lay award in evangelism. It is the Harry Denman Award and the clergy award was presented to our new lead pastor: Jenny Arneson. Congratulations to Jenny, Paul and Carol!

Book Review

The Final Week of Jesus by Max Lucado I had never read anything by Max Lucado before, and found this at my favorite used book store in Milwau-kee. Since it was cheap and only a little over 100 pag-es, it seemed a good way to try a new (to me) au-thor. The book is actually a shortened version of And the Angels Were Silent, and goes day by day through what Jesus' last week of life might have been like. This is a nice little book with some lovely artwork and very clear messages. Basically, the author highlights what Jesus' messages for his last days were, focusing primarily on the words of Matthew. He emphasizes three primary, last mes-sages of Jesus: Compassion for the forgotten, Con-tempt for the fake, and Concern for our readiness for his return. The author talks a lot about the passage from Matthew 25 -- "I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink...." I love this chapter and its challenge to us to care for the forgotten, unloved and lost. I liked this book for its combination of historical and biblical perspectives, and how it helped to clarify those final, all-important days of Jesus' life and ministry. I liked the author's writing style and found this to a satis-fying, challenging, and thoughtful book to read. Patricia Harrington 1-608-825-6332

Learn, Grow, and Serve by Becoming a Stephen Minister Would you like to be part of a ministry that gives people care and support when they need it most – while making a difference in your own life? Consider becoming a Stephen Minister!

Stephen Minis- ters are mem-bers of our congregation who provide one-to-one car-ing ministry to people experi-encing grief, divorce, loneli-ness, job loss, hospitalization and many oth- er life difficulties.

As a Stephen Minister, you’ll be equipped to pro-vide a very high level of care. After your training, our Stephen Leaders will match you with some-one in need of care – men are matched with men, women with women. You’ll meet with that per-son once a week to listen, care, pray, encourage and reflect Christ’s presence in his or her life. Stephen Ministry is life-changing for both the care receiver and the Stephen Minister. As an added bonus, your Stephen Minister skills can enhance relationships in other areas of your life as well.

Visit www.stephenministries.org/SM to learn about others’ experiences in serving as a Stephen Minister.

If you’d like to learn more about becoming a Ste-phen Minister contact Frank Gaylord at [email protected] or at 608-443-6361. During the month of July we will be receiving ap-plications from persons interested in participating in the 50 hour training class which will begin in September. Application forms are available in the periodical racks in the narthex or from Frank Gaylord. Applicants will be asked to interview with Stephen Leaders in August.

“Don’t pray when you feel like it. Have an appointment with the Lord and keep it.” —Corrie ten Boom

In summer 2003, I received news that my 95-year-old grandmother, a faithful follower of Jesus, had died. Right afterward, my husband and I took our two young girls outside to catch our breath — only to find a special symbol of new life waiting for us.

On the porch railing sat a strange-looking, wriggling lump. Upon closer investigation, we saw a tiger swal-lowtail emerging from its cocoon — body still plump and wings still wet. Before the huge butterfly tried out its wings and flew away, we had a few moments to take photos of it with our daughters.

We still marvel at the timing. We had named our baby after Grandma, but they hadn’t yet met. A stunning creature, sent just when we needed it, reminded us that “baby Carrie” would meet Grandma Carrie some-day in heaven, where we’ll all be made new.

Our welcome knows no boundaries. The people of the Sun Prairie United Methodist Church open our doors and our hearts to all

God’s children. We celebrate the diversity of God’s creation. We answer Jesus’s call to “love your neighbor” by embracing every person as a full participant in our church family, including people

of all ages, nations, races, sexual orientations and gender identities. We proclaim this statement of welcome especially to anyone who has known the pain of exclusion or discrimination through religion or in society. The people of the Sun Prairie United Methodist

Church strive to love as God loves and welcome all to grow in their relationship with God. We invite you to make our church part of your faith journey.
