4. Nathan noticed before his execution that both aide-de-camp Montressor and the Redcoat soldier with the red blotch on his face had tears on their faces. What do you think that this proves about the people on both sides of any conflict?

6. Do you agree with Samuel that turning in Nathan was the only thing he could do? Explain your answer.

7. Jonah was not afraid to confront Mr. Samuel, and he was not afraid of the gang of Tory boys. Why do you think Jonah was suddenly so courageous?

8. Were you surprised when Jonah forgave Mr. Samuel? Explain why Jonah forgave him so quickly.

9. Before Jonah left the ship, he told Mercy that he would be “watchful of the whale.” What did Jonah mean by this? What does the whale represent?

10. Jonah told Captain West, “I need to be a soldier, need it awful bad.” Why do you think Jonah felt like he needed to be a soldier? Explain your answer.

SpyWriting Assignments and Projects

The following can be assigned while reading the book or after finishing the book:

1. Divide the class into groups. Assign a chapter or set of chapters to each group. Have each group

come up with another title for the chapter(s). Come back together as a class, and ask the groups to

explain why they chose those titles. This could also be done as an individual assignment, and the

student could write a paragraph explaining his or her choice.

2. Have each student imagine that he or she is one of the characters in Spy and write a journal entry

from that character’s point of view.

3. Have each student write a headline and a news article about something that happened in a certain

chapter or set of chapters. One good time to assign this would be after reading chapter twelve.

4. Ask students to copy down a quotation from a certain chapter or set of chapters and to write a

paragraph explaining why that quotation is meaningful.

5. After students finish reading chapter six or after finishing the book, conduct a Four Corner Debate.

See attached teacher instructions.

6. In literature, a theme is a broad idea or message in a story. Most themes are implied rather than

explicitly stated. On page 137, the conversation between Timothy and Master Hale focuses on one

of the themes of Spy. Ask students to state that theme in one sentence and to write a detailed

paragraph explaining why they believe it is one of the themes of the story.

The following can be assigned after finishing the book:

7. Round or Flat Essay: See attached student instructions.

40

Page 41: Spy - Osage County Interlocal Cooperative unit.doc · Web viewWhy do you think Jonah felt like he needed to be a soldier? Explain your answer. Spy Writing Assignments and Projects

8. Memory Box Project: See attached student instructions. The instructions are for a group project.

However, the instructions could be modified for an individual project.

9. Talk Show: See attached student instructions. This is a group project.

10. Collage Project: Have students use magazine photos to create a collage of images that symbolize

important ideas, events, or themes in Spy. Ask them to choose five of the images from their

collages and write five paragraphs on a separate sheet of paper, explaining what each image

symbolizes. This can be used as an individual project or a group project.

11. While in John Montressor’s tent on his way to be executed, Nathan wrote a letter to his brother

Enoch and a letter to Colonel Knowlton. Assign each student to think about what Nathan might

have written if he had written a letter to Jonah and then to imagine that he or she is Nathan and to

write the letter.

12. Have each student choose two characters from Spy to compare and contrast in an essay.

13. Have each student write an essay explaining how Nathan Hale’s character truly represented the

ideals upon which America was founded. The student should include at least three examples from

the book.

14. Web Quest: In this project, students will use the internet to learn more about the American

Revolution and the spies of the American Revolution. Each group will develop a fictional spy

and write a fictional spy letter, which will correspond with actual events in the Revolutionary War

and will be written in a code developed by the group. Each group will also provide a translation

for the code and will map out a route that the fictional spy will take on his or her adventure.

Complete instructions can be found at the following link:

http://coe.west.asu.edu/students/kwestrick/wquest/index.htm

15. Before the first chapter of Spy is a page titled “The End.” On that page is written, “This is a story

that begins at the end. It is a story of a man who was too young and of a boy who grew suddenly

41

Page 42: Spy - Osage County Interlocal Cooperative unit.doc · Web viewWhy do you think Jonah felt like he needed to be a soldier? Explain your answer. Spy Writing Assignments and Projects

old.” Have students write a paragraph or an essay explaining what was meant when the author

said that Jonah grew suddenly old. Give examples from the book.

16. Irony is a literary or rhetorical device, in which there is a difference between what a person says

or does, and what that person means or what is generally understood. Have students write a

paragraph explaining how Nathan’s thoughts on page 184 are ironic.

17. Conflict is a necessary element of literature. External conflict occurs when a character struggles

against another character or an outside force. Internal conflict occurs when a struggle takes place

within a character’s mind to reach some new understanding or decision. Have students work

together in groups to write and perform two one-minute skits, one showing an example of external

conflict from Spy and one showing an example of internal conflict from Spy.

42

Page 43: Spy - Osage County Interlocal Cooperative unit.doc · Web viewWhy do you think Jonah felt like he needed to be a soldier? Explain your answer. Spy Writing Assignments and Projects

Round or Flat Essay

Round Characters have many sides. They grow or change in several ways. They think and react

on many levels. They are central to the story, its conflicts, and its final message. We care about them and

tend to react along with them to the things that happen.

Flat Characters have only one side. They may be major characters, but they do not change. Flat

characters are important to a story because the round character(s) interact with them. We often see them

only as the round characters see them and care about them because a round character does. We may feel

strongly about a flat character because he or she is a strong and consistent representative of good or of evil.

Write an essay identifying two round characters in Spy and two flat characters. Explain why you

think each of the characters you choose are round or flat. Be sure to explain how the round characters

change as the story progresses and to give evidence of how the flat characters do not change. The essay

should contain an introductory paragraph, four body paragraphs (one for each character), and a concluding

paragraph.

Memory Box Project

Choose one of the major characters in Spy, and, as that person, put together a memory box of special memories and mementoes.

Decorate the outside of the box as the character might have decorated it. Inside the box, you must include at least four “photos” and at least five mementoes. You may draw the photos, cut them out of magazines, or print them from the computer. Only one of your mementoes may be made out of paper.

Be true to your character. Choose items that would truly have been important to the character and significant to the story. Think about the events in the book and what truly would have been important to the character to save.

Be prepared to present your project to the class, explaining the significance of each item. Everyone must be involved in the presentation.

Four Corner DebateTeacher Instructions

Before the Lesson: Create four posters/signs printed in large letters with the following labels, one label per sign:

Strongly Agree

Agree

Disagree

Strongly Disagree

Place each poster in a different corner of the classroom.

The Lesson: Present one of the following statements to students. Choose the one that you believe will work best with your class.

1. Samuel Hale’s decision to turn Nathan in to the Redcoats was an honorable one.

2. In the book Spy Jonah Hawkins was at fault for Nathan Hale’s death.

3. Nathan Hale was right when he told Asher, “If any work is necessary to a great cause,

it becomes honorable.”

Give students 5 minutes to collect their thoughts about the topic. Then ask students if they

strongly agree,

agree,

disagree, or

strongly disagree

with the statement. Direct those who strongly agree to move to the corner of the classroom where the Strongly Agree sign is posted, those who agree to move to the corner of the classroom where the Agree sign is posted, those who disagree to move to the Disagree corner, and those who strongly disagree to move to the Strongly Disagree corner.

Hopefully, you have four groups gathered in different corners of the classroom. Appoint one student in each corner to be the note taker, and give students 5-10 minutes to discuss with the other students in their corner the reasons they strongly agree, agree, disagree, or strongly disagree.

At the end of the discussion period, ask one student from each group to share with the class some of the ideas they discussed in his or her group.

46

Page 47: Spy - Osage County Interlocal Cooperative unit.doc · Web viewWhy do you think Jonah felt like he needed to be a soldier? Explain your answer. Spy Writing Assignments and Projects

Perhaps one of the four groups made such a strong case that some students have changed their minds about their reactions to the statement. If that is the case, at this point in the activity give students an opportunity to change corners.

Provide 5-10 minutes more for students to continue their group discussions. At this point, every student in the group should be taking notes. At the end of the discussion time, each student uses those notes to write a persuasive paragraph or essay stating his or her position on the issue. (for example, I strongly agree with the statement [statement goes here] because…) Students should include in their paragraphs or essays the three strongest points supporting their positions.
