started out as an “after hours, just for us” R&D fun project,designed to meet the specific high performance needs of ASSOS Werks-mannschaft. This is the ASSOS factory pro cycling team, the road-going ex-tension of our R&D lab, a group of experts who design, engineer and approveall ASSOS products.

The ASSOS senior management team was so impressed by the products, as well as the reports and comments of the cycling team, theytook the unusual step of greenlighting production of this highly specializedgear. It was a risk. comprises cutting-edge components and special-order textiles, and requires a complex manufacturing process. In a word, it’s expensive.

Now all ASSOS clients can benefit from the project: five unique ASSOS products that create the ultimate cycling-specific raingearsolution, perfect for training and racing under the harshest conditions.

THE FABRIC• Primary fabric is TRITON (two versions, see Construction, above). This is a brand new family of waterprotection fabrics developed by the ASSOS textile laboratory, specifically engineered for the ASSOSclima.X product range.

The ASSOS Textile Laboratory developed the TRITON family of fabrics to provide a superior imperme-ability / vapor-permeability ratio. TRITON fabrics are able to adapt to changes in ambient temperaturethanks to “flexible membrane barrier technology.” When the temperature is low, the membrane reduces permeability, helping to retain body heat. As the temperature inside the garment rises, themembrane’s pores open to allow accelerated vapor transfer. TRITON fabrics are composite textiles,meaning the delicate inner TRITON membrane is protected by application-specific inner and outerfabric layers that enhance the process of staying dry by allowing evaporation while protecting fromthe elements.

TECHNOLOGICAL ENGINEERINGThe sturmPrinz holds a very special place within the ASSOS collection. Its development wasstarted four years ago by the core of the ASSOS Werksmannschaft (our in-house pro cyclingteam), with no intent to ever go commercial. 100% of the resulting product’s form followed onlythe needs of high performance functionality. No financial consideration went into its creation.Today, this credo of development still holds true for all ASSOS products — up to the 90% mark.Then, our accountants come in, rightly so, to ensure that at the end of the development cycleyour ASSOS product is still affordable. But in the case of the sturmPrinz, we gave the bean-counters the day off.

The objective was not to make a 100% waterproof jacket. Why not? Because 100% waterproof alsomeans 100% impermeable, and this would be catastrophic if you happen to be in the bike race of yourlife, in the lead, with two hours still to go. Why? Because, at this level of exertion, body perspiration isvery active, and the evaporation process must be proactive. It can’t be slowed excessively by your pro-tective shell. Otherwise, within a fairly short time, you would be in a small private sauna, sweating outall your essential salts and minerals. The result? Crossing the finish line in last place — with cramps.

Instead, the objective was to create the ideal rain jacket for high performance cycling. The challengewas finding and calibrating the optimum balance between insulation and protection, without jeopard-izing your performance, to provide you with a functional, intelligently engineered, cycling-specific anti-rain device that works!

Triton was created specifically to manufacture the ultimate high performance cycling rain-protectionjacket. According to our network, this has never ever happened. Fabric development is a long andcostly process, with the usual objective being to create a fabric that can be used for a variety ofapplications, making it more versatile, hence more economical. No reinventing the wheel, no revolution. Development of our own racing device started off threeyears ago with the first prototypes, the G.729 evolvinginto the G.730 (neither ever commercially available),resulting in the brand new, unique G731. How?

GOOMAHIt is a practical impossibility for a cycling apparelcompany to internally develop, from scratch, animpeccable high performance racing device likethe G731. The key word for the outstanding qua-lity of the result is Access – make available andintegrate competence and know-how throughthe unique, global ASSOS network.

What is carbon fibre? It’s a synthetic material justlike the primary components of ASSOS textiles.To create the G731, it started by finding the rightfibre, an ASSOS Textile Lab specialty! Develop-ment took its course and the engineering of theframe and creation of the physical prototype wasassigned to a group of European carbon specia-lists who usually develop and create avant-gardecarbon-fibre components for America’s Cup ra-cing, Moto GP and GT1 endurance car racing.Every aspect, every component of the G731 hasbeen designed, evaluated and approved by aspecialist. It is the result of 23 highly skilled in-dividuals taking part in the creation process –from fibres and epoxy to tooling, molding, geo-metry, math, aerodynamics, material fatigue,componentry, handcrafting, assembly, paint andperformance testing, to delivering a total comfortriding experience – all made by Goomah.

The result – G731 – has provided so much knowl-edge and joy, so many thrills, and such a prom-ising potential for more, that the developmentteam decided to form its own, independentSwiss cycling engineering company called Goo-mah SA, to possibly further engage in cycling

frame creation. ASSOS holds a minority stake inGoomah SA.

The G731 was engineered in Europe and is phys-ically manufactured in the country with the mostskilled hands when it comes to producing highquality, labor-intensive carbon fibre bicycles –Taiwan.

HOW TO USE IT?Created to be your best friend, climaSchutz protects you from wind, drizzle, light rain and cold. Ideallysuited for training and or racing in changing and cooler weather conditions, use it to insulate yourbody on cool, damp early morning rides, long downhills and, of course, when exposed to light rain.

ALS TIPSclimaSchutz protects from the outside, which also means that outbound moisture transfer is slowed.This happens regardless of the breathability of the wind/rainbreaker fabric. Consequently, we do notrecommend using shells (regardless of brand) when riding very hard for long periods of time becausethe body will sweat more, dehydrate faster and, in the process, loose essential minerals. To minimizethis effect, climaSchutz incorporates lateral air vents to accelerate evaporation and cool more effectively.

Oh, and while you’re at it, make the finished product transparent so we can quickly spot ourteammates under inclement racing conditions.” The ASSOS design team did it!

When applying amembrane textile in this crucial area, the task of providing effective wind blocking while allowingfreedom of movement becomes extremely challenging. VERY IMPORTANT: It is essential that you choose your perfect size. The LL.fugu can function properlyonly when it closely conforms to your body when in the tuck position. When you stand upright, thebibs will pull and feel all wrong. But this is correct! Bend forward, assume the cycling position andyou will feel the garment fall into place, relieving the pressure on your shoulders. Shorts, tights andknickers must contour to your body like a second skin, as wrinkle-free as possible. The goal of ASSOSapparel design is to help you achieve this perfect fit.

THE CONSTRUCTIONIn the world of cycling apparel, patents are very rare. In the case of the T.Lady s5, two lady-specificASSOS innovations have obtained a patent.First is the ABC Closure System specifically engineered to fit a woman’s body, creating the perfect fe-male fit solution for bib construction. Providing total wearing comfort, by means of the Y-panel designthat contours in-between instead of over the breasts, it incorporates the ABC Closure System, whichallows you to tailor the bib length to your liking and to more easily dress / undress.The second patent is for the construction of the leg grippers. Instead of full-circumference leg grippers,ASSOS developed a sewing construction that allows half-circumference grip without losing stability.Why? Because the female body naturally stores bit more fat in the thighs, and the leg grippers on fe-male shorts often provoke an esthetically unpleasing picture. Not anymore! Now women can enjoy aproper leg fit – the shorts stay in position – without the unflattering skin impressions.

The heart of any shorts is the protection insert, and the T.Lady features the legendary ASSOS customelastic interface insert. It is the result of a six-month field analysis in which 112 female cyclists par-ticipated, back when ASSOS first launched the Comfort Revolution (first elastic insert) over 10 yearsago. Since then, the ASSOS Lady insert has been refined and perfected, today featuring s5 waffletechnology that makes it 35% more breathable.

CAMPIONISSIMO AEPDLady specific pattern design takes into account female physiology and proportions. The T.Lady is pre-shaped, ergonomically designed to fit your anatomy correctly in the tuck cycling position. At ASSOSwe strive to obtain these results with as few panels as possible, placing the necessary elastic seamswhere you won’t feel them, but sufficient to allow the garment to function properly, enhancing yourcomfort and performance. Tailored to contour and protect your body intelligently, without restriction,the T.Lady provides total freedom of mind and movement.

THE KEY FABRICLike all the other s5 generation of shorts, the T.Lady features the Type.434 custom textile blend, afabric specifically designed and engineered for cycling applications by ASSOS Textile Lab Lugano. Thisfabric is not commercially available. Why a custom fabric? Because, for us, the fabric characteristicsneeded to produce high performance cycling shorts are unique, and it’s not acceptable to use a stan-dard, and less expensive, off-the-shelve spandex blend. The Type.434 features:- frameReturn powerMatrix — superFlat macrodimension fibre, enabling extremely dense knitting

construction per square inch, controlled elasticity and return stretch, hence more soft muscle com-pression, more protection in case of a crash and more resistance to abrasion.

- P.A.T. — Permanent Antibacterial Treatment. Inhibits bacterial formation, increasing hygiene, pro-longing fabric performance and features, and reducing odours.
