FROM THE FRONT DESK
by Frank & Terry Kaiss
A hearty welcome to the new season. Hoping you all had a good summer and are now prepared to go full steam ahead to make this new season a good one of dancing and friendship.
From the turnouts at the free summer dances, it appears every-one attending enjoyed them. This season provides us with a chance to enhance our district by bringing in new dancers to classes, recruit-ing non-affiliated dancers and new dancers to join our district clubs. So, let's all go forward to a banner year.
Remember.___Lts_ riat_only the leadership that leads. It's the mem-bers who make our district as great as we want it to be.
Don't forget to support the 28th
Delaware Valley Convention at Mt. Airy Lodge. If you haven't signed up, what are you waiting for? Every-one's help is needed. Let's all sup-port their effort. Remember, it's our convention.
EDUCATION
by Bob & Charlotte Goerlich
It's that time of year again, when square dancing gets up to full speed. There will be new classes starting, both squares and rounds, and we're hoping for a larger stu-dent body this year than last. If you have a friend who wishes to start classes and you don't know where one is being held, please call us at 215-887-2153. We will be happy to connect you with the nearest class being held in your area.
As with last year, the Mid-East Penn District will award 100% badges to all students who attend all of their classes. Sponsors -please make your students aware of this at the beginning.
It would be appreciated if all callers and cuers with classes, would let us know, as soon as poss-ible, how many booklets you will need. We. _tike to geLthena_to the students early in their instruction.
If we can help you with any of these things, we will be happy to hear from you.

DO YOU WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT?
by Jim Howatt
What does a "Seat Belt" have to do with square dancing? If you are in an accident and are hurt be-cause you did "not" have your belt on, you will probably miss out on some good times with your fellow square dancers. Plus, we will miss you!
Doris and I had ours on the night that our 22 ft. travel trailer decided to come off the "ball", swayed a couple of times and then spun us 210 degrees around on I-40, 50 miles west of Knoxville, TN at 2:00 a.m. in the morning (or do we nall it hinht), as we were returning
home from the 38th National in Oklahoma City.
I don't know if Doris, who was driving, or I could have handled the "tow vehicle", if we hadn't had the seat and over-the-shoulder belts on. They held us in place as Doris handled the car and kept us on the road. We were not hurt. Doris had a sore leg for a few days, probably because she tried to put the brake pedal through the floor. The trailer ended up in the right hand lane on
5
its right side facing west in the east bound lanes. We were on the shoulder - upright.
With the help of two truckers, who witnessed the accident, the State Police, who were 50 miles away when we called for them, two wreckers, who set the trailer up without further damage and a volunteer fireman, we were able to get back on the road and resumed our trip about 10 hours later. We needed to remove the awning and supports and replace one wheel rim, on the right side, in order to resume our trip. The next day at Doris' sister's, we cleaned up the inside of the trailer.
There is a saying I have used when operating steam propulsion plants aboard U.S. Nave Ships, "Many hours of boredome, a few minutes of interest and a couple of seconds of Sheer Terror". Sheer Terror - a casualty, accident, ex-plosion, fire, etc.
The Sheer Terror of our trip was when we were spinning around on a busy Interstate Highway. Those seat belts held us in place! Doris was able to control the vehicle and we were not hurt.
Seat belts - Wear Them!
"OUR JOB"
by William Arthur Ward
The choices we make each day of the week, The paths that we take, the goals that we seek, The kind of persons one day we will be Is daily determined by you and me.
Each thought that we think, each word that we say, Affect our tomorrows in some strange way. Each task that we finish, if it's well done, Prepares us to tackle a bigger one.
For each of us had a talent or two, A chance to make good on the jobs we do; A measure of time to squander or use Is given to us -- it's our job to choose.
Consider the above poem printed with the permission of its' author, William Arthur Ward.
A square and round dance club cannot long exist without people who are willing to do some task, no matter how small, to keep the club in operation. There are neither clubs nor activities that run auto-

matically; it takes people to make them go.
To all recent graduates and to all established dancers, we re-spectfully ask that "everyone", no exceptions, consider and act on doing at least one small thing for your Club, District or Federation. Please don't wait to be asked. Approach any officer or committee chairperson and ask, "How can I help?" It's quite acceptable to say, "I will not be chairperson for any-thing, but I will assist in any way I can." Or perhaps, "i don't have any talent for leadership, but I am a good follower. What can I do?" Or,"l really cannot commit myself for a long-term project, but I can bring refreshments for one dance. When do you need my help?" Or, "I haven't been dancing lately due to illness or a mishap, but I am good at making decorations that I can do at home. What do you need done?"
Remember - Many hands make the labor light. There is a lot to be done behind the scenes. Enlarge your circle of friends - participate!

* * * * * * * * * * MELODY LAKES BELLES AND BEAUS: We would like to welcome you to our 14th Annual Dinner Dance on October 21st. Come and join us for a night of fun at our "Hawaiian Holiday" at Milford Square Fire Hall, Milford Square, PA.
On June 20th, we had a fare-well dance for Cliff & Dot Kehrle, who have moved to Ohio to be with their family. We presented them with our farewell gift of a check and a shower of cards. A delicious ice cream cake was given and shared with their many friends at Belles & Beaus. We will miss them, as they were good members and did a lot for our club during their years with us. We wish them the best of luck, health and happiness, as they start their new life in Ohio.
We have a few corrections to make. It was stated in the July/ August issue that the Kehrle's cele-brated their 15th Anniversary at our covered dish dinner and elections dance on April 18th. It should have been Melody Lakes Belles & Beaus 15th Anniversary!
Also, there has been a change in our officers slate. Marlene Hughes & Bill Fairbanks, who were

for beginners, which will be opened to the public. We've added to our staff of callers. They will be Paul Andrews, Bill Appleby, Harry Bor-ger, Gleas Crumling, Dolores Pro-copio, Sam Procopio, Gene Sena-tore and George Varney.
We are approaching the three-quarter mark in ticket sales for hosting the Presidents' Ball on Sunday, April 29, 1990, with Mary Lindner of Yuma, Arizona, calling and Dolores Procopio, cueing.
New club co-ordinators are Edna & Norman Hartman, with Bob and Flo Hull as their assistants.
We were busy this summer with demos. We had three squares demonstrating at the 75th Anniver-sary celebration in Wernersville and another three squares showed up to help make it a festive after-noon for the Annual Berks Helm Festival. If that wasn't enough, we performed at the Inn at Reading and then helped out MS fora bene-fit at the Fairgrounds Malls. A big "thank you" to club supporters.

"Brown-Bag It for the Arts Program" on June 28th. We danced from noon to 1:00 PM on the Court-house lawn. There was even some easy square dancing that we had the audience participate in. Also, in July, our group danced at the Valley Manor Nursing Center on Route 309. It was enjoyed by all in atten-dance.
Now that fall is here, we're back on a regular schedule. Our class will be graduating at the end of September. They are looking for-ward to attending the Membership Dance in November.
Remember September 21, 22 & 23rd, and attend the Delaware Valley Convention at Mt. Airy Lodge and, October 25th, to attend our Halloween Dance. There will be "special" refreshments and many surprises that night.
* * * * * * * * * * TWILIGHTER ROUNDS: Every third Thursday we have a Party Dance. No lessons, just dancing and enjoying an evening of fun. Our Basic Class will be starting in Sep-tember.
Our club is growing and we are looking forward to dancing in a special Super Sunday program in Allentown, PA, on September 17th. If you are interested in joining us, please call 215-432-4268.

YELLOW ROCKERS: We camp to-gether, dance together, eat to-gether and tell tall tales around the campfire. Come join us for a week-end, if you camp, and share the fellowship and fun. The same fel-lowship and fun applies to our win-ter dances. Come visit us at our first dance on October 7th.
RUTH IE'S SEWING BASKET
by Ruth McLay
When using ruffles on your gar-ment, measure where the ruffle is to be placed. Usually, that mea-surement is doubled for the ruffle. If this is too much fullness for you, do not double the measurement. Use the measurement plus three-quarters of the measurement. You may be more satisfied with this. Ex-periment before cutting out.
You may decide to make a double ruffle. Try making the ruffle of two different materials. One of lace and one of your garment material.
To gather puffed sleeves, try using "sew easy lingerie elastic". It is sewn on with a wide zig zag and long length stitch. The best size is one-quarter inch wide. If you want to use other brands, be sure the elastic is soft and has a lot of elas-

ticity. For a different look, try making
a circle skirt. Tucking it up a couple of inches several places around the bottom of the skirt, forming a "peek-a-boo" effect. To finish off this ef-fect, place a previously prepared triangle of white material, on which several rows of white eyelet ruffling has been sewn crosswise with the widest row at the bottom. Attach tri-angle securely under skirt making sure you follow skirt length.
That's all for now from "sunny Florida". Have fun sewing!
SQUARE DANCE MONTH
The month of September is of-ficially designated as Square Dance Month. September is the season when most square dance clubs invite prospective dancers to
special events to interest them in joining the activity.
The theme for Square Dance Month 1989 is, "A Perfect Pair - Fun And Fitness! That's Square Dan-cing." A Promo-Pack is available that includes a full-color poster and 26 pages of ideas on square dance promotion.
The Promo-Pack is furnished free to the square dance clubs and organizations by Legacy. A dona-tion of $1.25 for postage is re-quested. Promo-Packs are avail-able from the Square Dance Month Chairmen at ASD, P.O. Box 488, Huron, OH 44839.
Let's double our pleasure, two by two, with the perfect pair. Let's really increase the size of our square dance classes this season!
