WHAT IS ASH WEDNESDAY? Ash Wednesday is the start

of the Lenten journey of

forty weekdays (Monday

through Saturday) that

takes the church to the

eve of Easter.

Ash Wednesday is about collective penitence and

facing our mortality. We confront our mortality and

our sinfulness, and we do this together. We

acknowledge and embrace our mortality through the

imposition of ashes as a united sign of our collective

acknowledgment and repentance, both individual

and together. We confess and turn away from our

sinfulness through confession and pardon. These two

actions—embracing our mortality and acknowledging

and turning from our sin—are the heart of the

Ash Wednesday Service. From Discipleship Ministries

WHAT IS LENT?

Lent is a season of forty days, not

counting Sundays, which begins

on Ash Wednesday and ends on

Holy Saturday. Lent comes from

the Anglo Saxon word lencten,

which means “spring.” The forty

days represents the time Jesus

spent in the wilderness, enduring

the temptation of Satan and

preparing to begin his ministry.

Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation

for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination

and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to

prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians

focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to

give up something or to volunteer and give of

themselves for others.

Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days

because each Sunday represents a “mini-Easter” and

the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful

anticipation of the Resurrection. From UMC.org

A Message to FAUMC Members and Friends,

The Season of Lent provides Jesus followers an opportunity and

responsibility of doing some spiritual inventory, some Christian

examination, in our lives. To assist us in this faith growth journey this

Lenten Season, we are invited (as listed on our Ash Wednesday worship bulletins) to reflect upon the following spiritual inventory questions:

For Ash Wednesday: WHERE DO I SEE WEAKNESS IN MYSELF AND THE NEED TO CHANGE?

For the Week of March 5th: WHAT DO I NEED TO ALLOW TO DIE IN ME IN ORDER TO BE CLOSER TO GOD?

For the Week of March 12th: WHAT DO I NEED TO CONFESS IN ORDER TO BE RID OF GUILT?

For the Week of March 19th: HOW FAR HAVE I STRAYED FROM GOD'S PURPOSE FOR MY LIFE?

For the Week of March 26th: DO I DOUBT GOD, MYSELF, OTHERS?

For the Week of April 2nd: FROM WHAT OR WHOM DO I RUN AWAY AND HIDE?

These above listed questions, when honestly asked, and faithfully acted upon can

bring positive spiritual and emotional growth individually....and collectively,

as a community of faith seeking God's will and way for our lives.

During this Lenten Season, we are invited as a church family to participate in a spiritual

discipline journey in which we explore and seek to better practice observing Sabbath time.

In a fast-paced, hurry-sickness culture making time for authentic sabbath time often

suffers; or, worse, is totally eliminated from our lives. Under the guidance of scripture and

a book entitled "24/6” by Matthew Sleeth, MD, we will

seek to carve out a regular practice of sabbath time -

that which our souls and our lives crave and need for

authentic spiritual life and freedom. “24/6” will guide our

Lenten Journey and form our Sermon Series during the

Season of Lent as well as our Lenten Bible Study.

All are invited and encouraged to take part.

The 4-part “24/6” Bible Study will meet at 4:30pm in the

Fellowship Hall beginning Sunday, March 5th. Other

Bible study dates are Sundays-March 12, 26 & April 2nd.

Perhaps some of the above questions, along with additional ones, will be a part of our

discussion and/or reflection during our study. Books are available for $5. Please see Danya

Sellers.

A fellow servant in Christ,

Pastor Michael
