CHAIR: Per Sundström, Head of Research at the Swedish CivilContingencies Agency (MSB) Per Sundström is since Jan 2016 Head of Knowledge developmentand Research, but has been with MSB since 2012. Within thissection there is a number of activities all aiming at producing newknowledge or basis for decisions within Societal security. Thesection is also responsible for MSBs Research funding, with anannual budget of approximately 115 million SEK. Per has previousexperience from the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) andthe Ministry of Defence. Per has a doctoral degree at The Royalinstitute of Technology (KTH, Stockholm) from 2005 within the areaof innovation and product development.

PARTICIPANTS: Annika Carlsson-Kanyama, Associate Professor, StrategicSustainability Studies Annika Carlsson Kanyama has PhD in natural resourcemanagement and currently work at KTH as a researcher anddocent. She carries out research with relevance to climate changeadaptation, urban agriculture and sustainable consumption patterns.

Alexander Cedergren, Associate senior lecturer, Division of RiskManagement and Societal Safety, Lund university Alexander Cedergren, PhD, is an Associate senior lecturer at theDivision of Risk Management and Societal Safety at Lund University,Sweden. His main research interests include risk and vulnerabilityassessment and critical infrastructure resilience. He is affiliated toLund University Centre for Risk Assessment and Management(LUCRAM) and Lund University Centre for Critical InfrastructureProtection (CenCIP).

Lina Ringberg, Coordinator of Disaster Risk Reduction, City ofMalmö Lina Ringberg works at the City Office Department of Societal Safetyand Risk Management in the city of Malmö, Sweden. Lina has aBachelor in Social Science with a specialisation on Internationalcrisis and conflict management. As a DRR, disaster risk reductioncoordinator, the focus is both on prevention, preparedness and crisismanagement. As a DRR coordinator Lina has a broad network,cooperating with researchers among others.

One of the goalsof the Society for Risk Analysis-Europe is to ensure that the workthat academics do at universities are also practically useful. Thispanel discussion focuses on bridging this gap with our panelistsdiscussing real life practical examples ranging from the present daythreats of disinformation and fake news to planning and hazardmanagement and the importance of finding compromises betweenindigenous people and large scale infrastructure projects.

CHAIR: Ragnar E. Löfstedt, Professor of Risk Management

Ragnar E. Löfstedt is the Director of King’s Centre of RiskManagement, King’s College London, UK where he teaches andconducts research on risk communication and management. He isAdjunct Professor at the Department of Engineering and PublicPolicy, Carnegie Mellon University, and he is a Visiting Professor atthe Centre for Public Sector Research, Gothenburg University,Sweden.

He has conducted research in risk communication and managementin such areas as renewable energy policy, food safety issues,pharmaceutical recalls, telecommunications, biosafety, and the sitingof building of incinerators, nuclear waste installations and railways.

Dr. Löfstedt is the author/editor of ten books and over 90 peerreviewed articles, is the editor-in-chief for Journal of Risk Research,editor of the Earthscan publications' Risk, Society and Policy bookseries, and is on the editorial boards of Journal of HealthCommunication, International Journal of Risk Assessment andManagement, and Risk Management.

After eleven years of teaching inthe USA she joined the faculty of resilience at Rabdan Academy,UAE in 2016, in their flagship BSc program in Business ContinuityManagement and Integrated Emergency Management.

Her research interests include risk communication in multi-ethniccommunities, protective action decision-making, organizationalresiliency and climate change mitigation and adaptation. She hasbeen funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, TexasDepartment of State Health Services and Dallas Area Habitat forHumanity. She is currently serving a four year term as the VicePresident of the Research Committee on the Sociology of DisastersRC39 with the International Sociological Association (2015–2018).

Mikael Karlsson, Associate Professor in Environmental Science

Dr. Mikael Karlsson is a senior researcher at KTH Royal Institute ofTechnology in Stockholm. His work focuses on environmentalgovernance, science-policy interactions and risk managementrelated to climate and energy issues, marine ecosystems andchemical pollution.

Dr. Karlsson serves since long in various expert bodies and agencyboards, in Sweden and internationally, among these the SwedishAgenda 2030 delegation, the Swedish Chemicals Agency, and theEuropean Commission’s High Level Group on Energy IntensiveIndustries. In 2005–2017, he was President of the EuropeanEnvironmental Bureau, Europe’s largest environmental organisation.In 2002–2014, he was President of the Swedish Society for NatureConservation.

Dr. Karlsson has been a frequent participant at various EU, OECD,UN and WTO meetings. He is also Partner and Senior Advisor at2050 Consulting in Stockholm, advising companies and publicorganisations on sustainability issues. He has been teachingenvironmental sciences since 1995.

She is active at the Centre forGender Research, and CEMFOR, the Centre for MultidisciplinaryResearch on Racism, Uppsala University.
