INDO-US EXPERTS’ MEET AT SRU Chennai,

„What more drugs used for other diseases can be tried for cancer’ will be the topic for
Indo-US experts at a workshop on “drug repurposing for improving radiotherapy of cancer at Sri
Ramachandra University next Monday (Nov 13th
).
Drug repurposing or drug repositioning is using existing drugs of one disease for
treating another. Complex and intriguing nature of the biology of cancer, limited successful
therapeutic options, prohibitive costs of new drug discovery and decline in the number of
regulatory approved drugs over the years has encouraged researchers to take drug re-purposing
approach in cancer care. Further boost was given by the success of many non-cancer drugs as
anti-cancer therapeutics like Pixantrone.
Sponsored by the Indo-US Science and Technology forum the meet will be inaugurated
by Tamilnadu Health Secretary Dr.J.Radhakrishnan, the workshop will have exerts in cancer
research and therapy from leading US and Indian cancer institutes and research centres sharing
their experiences.
Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre has established the “State of the art” facility in
Radiotherapy with the commissioning of Image Guided Radiotherapy (Elekta Versa HD system)
and High Dose Brachytherapy (Elekta Micorselectron system), with an ambitious research
program for improving the management of cancer.
