"The United States strongly supports all efforts between India and Pakistan that can contribute to a more stable, democratic, and pros- perous region, including meetings between the Indian and Pakistani officials," a senior State Department offi- cial said after Prime Minis- ter Narendra Modi's address in Kerala. "Our longstanding posi- tion is that we believe India and Pakistan stand to benefit from the normalisation of relations and practical coop- eration. We encourage India and Pakistan to continue to engage in direct dialogue aimed at reducing tensions," the official said. Reports said that their vehicles were aacked by stone throwers at Hartrakh, Singhpora. Several vehi- cles were damaged in the incident. These Hajjis were returning aſter performing Hajj and were on way to their respective homes from Srinagar Airport when they were aacked. Islamabad, Sep 25: Pakistan today accused Prime Minis- ter Narendra Modi of making provocative statements that it was exporting terror, saying his remarks were part of a “well thought out vilification campaign” to distract atten- tion from Kashmir. Pakistan Foreign Office, in a statement, said Prime Minister Modi in a public meeting in Kerala “tried to malign Pakistan”. “It is unfortunate that Indian leadership continues to indulge in a well thought out vilification campaign against Pakistan by making provocative statements and baseless accusations. Such irresponsible display of behaviour at the highest political level is regretta- ble,” the Foreign Office said. “It is evident that, as an act of desperation, India is trying to distract world attention from the atrocities perpetrated” by its forces in Kashmir against “innocent and defenseless” Kashmiris, including children and women, the statement said. The “atrocities” in Kash- mir intensified since the “extra-judicial killing of Kashmiri youth leader” Burhan Muzaffar Wani in July this year, it said of the slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander. Pakistan’s reaction came after Prime Minister Modi launched a blistering attack on it yesterday in his first public address after last Sunday’s deadly Uri attack. The Pakistan Foreign Office statement alleged, “In the last seventy-five days, Indian occupation forces have brutally mar- tyred more than 100 Kash- miris, blinded hundreds and injured thousands.” The Foreign Office claimed that the interna- tional community has taken notice of these “blatant human rights violations” with concerns expressed by several countries as well as UN and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Highly placed sources said that more than 8000 personnel of CRPF have been sent to Kashmir in the past 78 days to contain the pro-freedom protests taking place across the nook and corner of the region. The fresh “induction” is in addi- tion to 47 battalions of the force already stationed in Kashmir. “Yes, we have deployed 102 additional com- panies in the region during the unrest, apart from our battalions that are already present in the region,” a senior CRPF officer, prefer- ring anonymity, disclosed. According to the offi- cer, they (additional para- military men) have been deployed in Srinagar and other districts. The additional forces have arrived in Kashmir at SHABIR IBN YUSUF Srinagar, Sep 25: To counter the ongoing uprising, police have launched massive arrest drive across Kashmir and around 6000 persons have so far been arrested. Police say the hunt is on for more. The arrest drive has been launched in every nook and corner of Kashmir and hundreds of youth have been forced to go into hiding. For the past six weeks, the police and paramilitary forces assisted by army have started conducting night raids in differ- ent parts of Kashmir arrested about 6000 people. “There are above 2200 FIRs registered for disruption of peace and law & order,” Director Gener- al Police, Coordination, S P Vaid told Greater Kashmir. “Above 5600 people are involved in these FIRs.” Residents of almost all areas of Kashmir say that joint parties raid their residential houses during the night, barge into houses, break windows and doors, and pick up any young- ster in the house they get hold of. The arrests have sparked off protests in most parts of Kash- mir and several areas in Jammu region. Day in and day out there are reports of protests from one or the other area. Most of the arrests of have been carried out in south Kash- mir (Anantnag, Pulwama, Awa- ntipora, Kulgam and Shopian) followed by north Kashmir (Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandi- pora, Sopore, Handwara) and central Kashmir (Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal). Official sources said that above 3500 youth have been arrested in south Kashmir, 1500 in north Kashmir and about 1000 in cen- tral Kashmir. A senior police official said that there is no doubt that night raids and arrests increased during last three weeks. “The measure has been taken to foil the processions and protests,” he said. The continuous nocturnal raids by joint parties of police and other forces have forced hundreds of youth in Kashmir to go into hiding. Srinagar, Sep 25: As many as 102 additional companies of the paramilitary CRPF have arrived in Kashmir in the past two-and-a-half months in a bid to quell the pro-free-dom uprising triggered by the killing of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani by forces on July 8, Greater Kash-mir has learnt.

Highly placed sources said that more than 8000 personnel of CRPF have been sent to Kashmir in the past 78 days to contain the pro-freedom protests taking place across the nook and

corner of the region. The fresh “induction” is in addi-tion to 47 battalions of the force already stationed in Kashmir. “Yes, we have deployed 102 additional com-panies in the region during the unrest, apart from our battalions that are already present in the region,” a senior CRPF officer, prefer-ring anonymity, disclosed.

According to the offi-cer, they (additional para-military men) have been deployed in Srinagar and other districts.

Srinagar, Sep 25: To counter the ongoing uprising, police have launched massive arrest drive across Kashmir and around 6000 persons have so far been arrested. Police say the hunt is on for more.

The arrest drive has been launched in every nook and corner of Kashmir and hundreds of youth have been forced to go into hiding.

For the past six weeks, the police and paramilitary forces assisted by army have started conducting night raids in differ-ent parts of Kashmir arrested about 6000 people.

“There are above 2200 FIRs registered for disruption of peace

and law & order,” Director Gener-al Police, Coordination, S P Vaid told Greater Kashmir. “Above 5600 people are involved in these FIRs.”

Residents of almost all areas of Kashmir say that joint parties raid their residential houses during the night, barge into houses, break windows and doors, and pick up any young-ster in the house they get hold of. The arrests have sparked off protests in most parts of Kash-mir and several areas in Jammu region. Day in and day out there are reports of protests from one or the other area.

Most of the arrests of have been carried out in south Kash-mir (Anantnag, Pulwama, Awa-

ntipora, Kulgam and Shopian) followed by north Kashmir (Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandi-pora, Sopore, Handwara) and central Kashmir (Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal).

Official sources said that above 3500 youth have been arrested in south Kashmir, 1500 in north Kashmir and about 1000 in cen-tral Kashmir.

A senior police official said that there is no doubt that night raids and arrests increased during last three weeks. “The measure has been taken to foil the processions and protests,” he said.

The continuous nocturnal raids by joint parties of police and other forces have forced

hundreds of youth in Kashmir to go into hiding. The residents allege harassment at the hands of forces who barge into resi-dential areas at night time.

“The night raids are being conducted almost daily in north, central and south Kashmir areas to nab youth who are involved in stone-throwing and street protests in the current unrest,” said the police official. “At some places the night raids have trig-gered protests.”

The official informed said that about 3000 arrested persons have been bailed out by the courts. “Some are in custody and some are facing different charges and are still in police custody,” he added.
