In 1597, he began his studies in the Faculty of Theology at the University of Toulouse. In 1600 he received his educaon by the Franciscans at Dax on September 23 and at the age of 19 he was ordained a priest. In 1605 Father Vincent was captured by pirates and taken to Tunis, sold as a slave, and remained there for two years. He convinced his second mas- ter, a former monk, to return to France for absoluon. In Rome he came to the aenon of Pope Paul V, who sent him on a mission to the French court of Henry IV, where Father Vincent remained as chaplain to the queen. He inspired many of the court to an interest in the poor of Paris. In 1617, in the middle of winter, God gave him a sign while at the bedside of a sick peasant. The deathbed confession of this dying servant opened Vincent's eyes to the crying spiritual needs of the peas- antry of France. On December 8, 1617, Father Vincent began to organ- ize his many works of charity for the poor and the sick, the children and the aged. In 1633 Saint Louise de Marillac helped him establish the Daughters of Charity. By 1625 he had influenced a number of young men, some of them priests, to join him in forming a religious group to be called the Congregaon of the Mission oſten known as The Vincenans”. Father Vincent and his friends worked with the poor people of the countryside near Paris, teaching them about Jesus Christ and the Good News of the Gospel and helping them obtain food and clothing. In 1633 the Arch- bishop of Paris gave him the Priory of St. Lazare as a headquarters. Saint Vincent died in Paris on September 27, 1660. SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church Celebrating 93 Years

1923 - 2016

Drawing from the treasures of the Gospel and Roman Catholic Church teaching, we commit ourselves to be living examples of a community rich in faith,

seeking the Kingdom of God.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 19, 2016

I WAS THINKING… The second stained glass window in the old “usher’s room” de-picts Saint Vincent de Paul. Saint Vincent de Paul was born April 24, 1581 of poor parents in the village of Pouy in Gascony, France. For two years, Vincent received his education at a college in Dax, France adjoining a monastery of the Friars Minor where he and others resided. In 1597, he began his studies in the Faculty of Theology at the University of Toulouse. In 1600 he received his education by the Franciscans at Dax on September 23 and at the age of 19 he was ordained a priest. In 1605 Father Vincent was captured by pirates and taken to Tunis, sold as a slave, and remained there for two years. He convinced his second mas-ter, a former monk, to return to France for absolution. In Rome he came to the attention of Pope Paul V, who sent him on a mission to the French court of Henry IV, where Father Vincent remained as chaplain to the queen. He inspired many of the court to an interest in the poor of Paris. In 1617, in the middle of winter, God gave him a sign while at the bedside of a sick peasant. The deathbed confession of this dying servant opened Vincent's eyes to the crying spiritual needs of the peas-antry of France. On December 8, 1617, Father Vincent began to organ-ize his many works of charity for the poor and the sick, the children and the aged. In 1633 Saint Louise de Marillac helped him establish the Daughters of Charity. By 1625 he had influenced a number of young men, some of them priests, to join him in forming a religious group to be called the Congregation of the Mission often known as “The Vincentians”. Father Vincent and his friends worked with the poor people of the countryside near Paris, teaching them about Jesus Christ and the Good News of the Gospel and helping them obtain food and clothing. In 1633 the Arch-bishop of Paris gave him the Priory of St. Lazare as a headquarters. Saint Vincent died in Paris on September 27, 1660. He was beatified on August 21, 1729 by Pope Benedict XIII and canonized on June 16, 1737

by Pope Clement XII. Saint Vincent de Paul is a patron Saint of charities and volunteers. We celebrate the feast of Saint Vincent de Paul

on September 27. This stained glass window depicts St. Vincent de Paul taking care of one of the poor children of Paris. Stained glass

windows of St. Pius X, St. Vincent de Paul, the Nativity and the Baptism of the Lord windows in the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel were installed in our church as the last one between April 17 and April 22, 1961. The windows were purchased by Mrs. Victoria Gajewski and her daughter Mrs. Mary Fitrzyk. Saint Vincent de Paul, pray for us!

To wbrew temu światu. O. Augustyn Pelanowski OSPPE

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Who is Jesus for you - and what difference does he make in your life? Many in Israel recognized Jesus as a mighty man of God, even comparing him with the greatest of the prophets. Peter, always quick to respond whenever Jesus spoke, professed that Jesus was truly the "Christ of God" - "the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). No mortal being could have revealed this to Peter, but only God. Through the "eyes of faith" Peter discovered who Je-sus truly was. Peter recognized that Jesus was much more than a great teacher, prophet, and miracle worker. Peter was the first apostle to publicly declare that Jesus was the Anointed One, consecrated by the Father and sent into the world to redeem a fallen human race enslaved to sin and cut off from eternal life with God (Luke 9:20, Acts 2:14-36). The word for "Christ" in Greek is a translation of the He-brew word for "Messiah" - both words literally mean the Anointed One. Jesus begins to explain the mission he was sent to accomplish: Why did Jesus command his disciples to be silent about his identity as the anointed Son of God? They were, after all, appointed to proclaim the good news to everyone. Jesus knew that they did not yet fully under-stand his mission and how he would accomplish it. Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD), an early church father, explains the reason for this silence: “There were things yet unful-filled which must also be included in their preaching about him. They must also proclaim the cross, the passion, and the death in the flesh. They must preach the resurrection of the dead, that great and truly glorious sign by which tes-timony is borne him that the Emmanuel is truly God and by nature the Son of God the Father. He utterly abolished death and wiped out destruction. He robbed hell, and overthrew the tyranny of the enemy. He took away the sin of the world, opened the gates above to the dwellers upon earth, and united earth to heaven. These things proved him to be, as I said, in truth God. He commanded them, therefore, to guard the mystery by a seasonable silence until the whole plan of the dispensation should arrive at a suitable conclusion. (Commentary on Luke, Homily 49)” God's Anointed Son must suffer and die to atone for our sins: Jesus told his disciples that it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer and die in order that God's work of redemption might be accomplished. How startled the disciples were when they heard this word. How different are God's thoughts and ways from our thoughts and ways (Isaiah 55:8). It was through humiliation, suffering, and death on the cross that Jesus broke the powers of sin and death and won for us eternal life and freedom from the slavery of sin and from the oppression of our enemy, Sa-tan, the father of lies and the deceiver of humankind. We, too, have a share in the mission and victory

Page 3: SS. Peter and Paul Roman atholic hurch elebrating 93 Years ...ssppdetroit.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/0619394.pdf · In 1633 Saint Louise de Marillac helped him establish the Daughters

of Jesus Christ: If we want to share in the victory of the Lord Jesus, then we must also take up our cross and follow where he leads us. What is the "cross" that you and I must take up each day? When my will crosses (does not align) with God's will, then his will must be done. To know Jesus Christ is to know the power of his victory on the cross where he defeated sin and conquered death through his resurrection. The Holy Spirit gives each of us the gifts and strength we need to live as sons and daughters of God. The Holy Spirit gives us faith to know the Lord Jesus personally as our Redeemer, and the power to live the gospel faithful-ly, and the courage to witness to others the joy, truth, and freedom of the Gospel. Who do you say that Jesus is? "Lord Jesus, I believe and I profess that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Take my life, my will, and all that I have, that I may be wholly yours now and forev-er." (Copyright 2016, Don Schwager)

THANK YOU! On behalf of the SS. Peter and Paul Altar Society, we want to express our sincere appreciation to Father Jer-ry for allowing us to host POLISH HERITAGE NIGHT on May 14, 2016. It was a huge success, and we have been re-quested to host it again! The mass was outstanding. Father Jerry honors our church with beautiful, traditional, conservative holy liturgies that lifts each one of us to pay utmost respect to our most Blessed Trinity. Johnny Kash and his musical tal-ents were exquisitely spiritual. Gabriela Kash sang “Serdeczna Matko” with such emotion that as memories of days past were reminisced, tears flowed since everything we and our families ever needed has always been found right at SS. Peter and Paul. For those who volunteered to help us with this par-ty in any way, Altar Society thanks you and prays for abun-dant blessings for you and your families. We are a very small crew of working members, and we appreciate any-one who cheerfully assisted us with this beautiful celebra-tion. To our 320 wonderful parishioners and guests who made the night glorious, we appreciated that you returned home for a night of fellowship and memories. Our leader, Irene Turek, is doing wonderfully and was the true wind beneath our wings. She guided us through this project with love and insight. Irene taught us well, but was truly missed that evening. Ann Miedlar stepped up in Irene’s absence and helped with every detail which made the night a success. Irene and Ann have worked for decades along with other members in the soci-ety to contribute to the beauty of SS. Peter and Paul. So on behalf of Theresa Barnes, Cinde Rutkowski, Joanne Tuchowski-Machowicz, Susan Franco and all Altar Society members, we send our sincerest thanks to those who helped make this night a moment to gather and praise our God who is great, celebrate our Polish heritage which unites, and enjoy our friends and families who we love. We sincerely thank members from our Polish mass for sup-porting our event. We also extend a warm request to all the ladies of our parish to join our society and help us con-tinue the work of SS. Peter and Paul’s Altar Society.

Christian Service Report by Michael Thomas SS. Peter and Paul 2016 CSA Update

Week Two of Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) Well, things have dipped down in week two, from $2800 last week to $580 this week, totaling $3380 with 26 people pledging. This is close to $1000 less than last year where we had $4395 in the second week. A number of fac-tors, including time of the month and the economic cli-mate, may be at work here, but we can still pick up our original momentum for week three. We know that you will come thru on this important parish responsibility! We still have plenty of time to reach or exceed our target amount of $14,129 this year, or at the very least, greatly reduce our shortfall from last year! We still have a way to go, but as a parish we can get together and do the best we can!

Pray For Our Deceased

“But our citizenship is in Heaven and from it we also await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will change our lowly body to conform with His glorified body by the Power that enables Him also to bring all things into subjection to Himself.” (Philippians 3:20-21)

† Otto Sash

Pray for the Sick

All-powerful and everlasting God, your Son accepted our suffering to teach us the virtue of patience in human ill-ness. Hear the prayers we offer for our sick brothers and sisters. May all who suffer know that they are joined to Christ in His suffering for the salvation of the world. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
