St. Boni Planning Commission Chair Fred Keller felt that it would be “great” to join forces with Min- netrista and submit a joint applica- tion for the possibility of working with the MDT professionals. Minnetrista Mayor Cheryl Fisch- er also liked that idea. “The Minnesota Design Team ap- plication would be a good place to start,” she said. Along with improving commer- cial endeavors in both communities, the two councils agreed that creat- ing community identity was another common goal. Community surveys will be used to help determine what citizens want to see in their cities. Minnetrista Councilor Anne Hunt felt that water would provide another “great” opportunity for the two cities to work together. Min- netrista has plans to build two new water treatment plants. Intercon- nects and opportunities to back up each other’s water supplies would be important, she added. “The more we do together, the more the two cities will come to- gether,” Minnetrista Councilor Mark Vanderlinde said, whose fam- ily history in the area dates back to when Minnetrista was a township. “Back then, St. Boni was the city.” Funk shared some information his city received in a presentation from Buxton, a company which helps communities identify com- mercial possibilities by examining demographics in great detail. Cities can use that information to promote themselves and to recruit businesses, he added. The councils discussed the pos- sibility of looking at “eliminating city boundaries” for the purpose of recruiting businesses as a “commu- nity” instead of two separate cities. With two common goals on the table, the councils decided to focus on those two issues first. The two mayors, along with city staffers, will meet again on Dec. 18 and come up with specific discus- sion points for another meeting. The next public meetings will be scheduled for sometime in January, possibly on a Saturday to accommo- date interested residents. The councils agreed that two meetings should be held – one in each city. The agenda will be the same, but the councils acknowl- edged that residents might be more likely to attend a meeting in their own city. “Let’s keep an open mind,” Funk said. “Maybe we should say coop- eration instead of consolidation. We’re just scratching the surface, so let’s look at the possibilities.” City officials plan another meeting later this month Meeting / from Page 2 Eric Nord, a 1981 graduate of Waconia High School, has been selected for inclusion in Moun- tain States Super Lawyers-Busi- ness/Corporate Edition 2013.
