People in Daun Art village formed a Self Help Group
20 housewives of the poorest of the poor and vulnerable familiesin Kampong Speu province's Samrong Tong district's Skuscommune's Duan Art village joined together forming a Self HelpGroup in their village and invested 10000 Riel (about USD2.5)
each member, according a consultative meeting facilitated by SSFstaff on February 10, 2008.
At the beginning, this group is having a look each other to findsomeone among them to become a group leader, Secretary andtreasurer that they believe that they can become to grouprepresentatives directing their group and to easily collaboratewith SSF and other stakeholders. This group members will beelected their representatives next week when they will meettogether again to collect the investment capital as appointmentdeadline.
Please we back to review something that happened before thisgroup was formed with serious working by SSF in attemptingservices supports to them. People in this village, they were nolonger believable to other services supported from socialorganizations because they said that "they used to cheat by someNGOs that they accessed into this village and asked them toinvest likes SHG but after they gathered money from them, they took the collected money into their personal pocket money". They
' Now People doSSF would like to share you an amazing success story that wegot from a community in our target area that we mobilizepeople in this village from doing nothing on the land to green
field at the moment. 10 poor families among the household inthis village change their habit and follow to a demo farmer wetrained and advised. SSF delights to see this happen in theirvillage. SSF never thought that a little support from us giventhem positively impact to their livelihoods.
Please we go back to see what happen within this community, Tonlab is the name of a village lo cated in Skus commu ne,Samrong Tong district, Kampong S peu province. Villagers in thisvillage, they did not habit to pl an or grow their crops in dr yseason or when their land is free from rice transplantation. Onlya season a year, they transplant their rice crop and wait toharvest.
Late 2006, SSF accessed into this village and began to supporta poorest family sending their three underage girls that parentsattempted to seek job as garment factory for to school and thena select another family to be a demo famer, plant morning gloryby using non chemical fertilizer . Villagers over there, don'tbelieve to what we did and they gave value less to us by sayingthat "Now is a chemical fertilizer era, most people they use why
you are crazy to return back" and "Why do you need to plant vegetable likes morning glory? It is cheap price [on market] it
will not balance to the labour and capital you invest?” Yes, In fact, They told us the correct answer if we plant morningglory like what they habit to do, planting one ridge or row andwaiting to harvest and then continue to plan another one butwhat SSF and demo farmer do is creating a Morning GlorPlanting Business for a family that they at least grow 10-20ridges per month and they have to harvest them from 25-50
