News in the Spotlight STATES TO CHIP IN FOR SCHOOLS STATE leaders have been asked to increase their education budgets to enable the Federal Government to roll out the biggest educational reform in decades. Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced the funding proposal based on the Gonski Education Review recommendations. The National Plan for School Improvement will mean $14.5 billion for schools over six years. Public schools will get the biggest share of the pie. Ms Gillard said the Federal Government would fund 65% of the plan and called on state premiers and chief ministers to increase their school budgets by 3% per year. NSW will receive the biggest share with $5 billion in additional funding over six years. Queensland will receive $3.8 billion and Victoria $4 billion.
