Point 2.
Not all people are as bad as
they could be, but all
people are as bad off as
they could be
![Page 5: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Point 3.
The various experiences of life that
lost men and women go through are
the attempts of God to get their
attention long enough to get them to
listen to the gospel one time.
![Page 6: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Point 4.
The final end of mankind is proof
positive we have a disease.
![Page 7: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Point 5.
It is because all the
world is guilty that
every sinner must
come individually
and surrender to
Jesus Christ or else
never get to heaven.
![Page 8: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Point 6.
All legalism does is give you a
standard that brings out the
carnality that is in you.
![Page 9: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Thesis:
There is no way man can attain
righteousness with God by
starting from himself.
![Page 10: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Point 1.
The one sin people go to Hell for is
rejecting the righteousness of God.
![Page 11: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Definition:
Justification is righteousness
provided by means of a legal
declaration.
![Page 12: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Definition:
Redemption is the
payment of the
price required to
set a prisoner free
from sin.
![Page 13: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Definition:
The word propitiation means
a payment that makes God
pity us because it satisfies
his offended justice.
![Page 14: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Point 2.
God was
satisfied by the
divine blood of
the Son of God,
not just by his
death.
![Page 15: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Point 3.
When God dealt
with sin publicly
he dealt with it
permanently.
![Page 16: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Point 4.
In order to be saved, you have to let
God select what satisfies him.
![Page 17: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Definition:
The word
remission
literally
means to
send back or
send away.
![Page 18: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Definition:
Forbearance is God’s self-restraint in
the Old Testament at punishing sin
because of his foreknowledge of the
cross.
![Page 19: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)

WHAT ROME BELIEVES IN CONTRA WHAT ROMANS TEACHES
1. Inspiration, but not of scripture ALONE Rome adds tradition
2. Intercession, but not of Christ ALONE Rome adds dead Catholics
3. Salvation, but not by grace through faith ALONE Rome adds sacraments and sacramentals
4. Forgiveness, but not through Christ ALONE Rome adds the priests and bishops
5. Headship, but not of Christ ALONE Rome adds the Pope and his Cardinals
6. Righteousness, but not by Christ ALONE (justification) Rome adds religious merit
![Page 20: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
• For the Jew, "by faith" meant faith
formed the basis for his works in
bringing a sacrifice
• For the Gentile, "through faith"
means salvation by faith apart from
ANY works of the law
![Page 21: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Point 5.
You are saved by grace so
you can live by grace.
![Page 22: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Definition:
Reconciliation
means to bring
two parties back
into union.
![Page 23: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
THE SCEPTER OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
1. Salvation: deliverance to get God's health2. Redemption: purchasing to get God's freedom3. Reconciliation: uniting to get God's fellowship4. Propitiation: satisfying to get God's mercy5. Expiation: purging to get God's cleansing6. Sanctification: setting apart to get God's holiness7. Imputation: accounting or reckoning to get God's merit8. Justification: declaring righteous to get God's life
![Page 24: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Thesis:
Under the old dispensation
somebody could fake the works if
they did not have the faith, but God
closed that loophole with grace.
![Page 25: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Definition:
• Justification by faith is the way sinners
are declared righteous because they are
provided the righteousness of Christ to
establish a relationship with God.
• Justification by works is when God deals
with you in time (not eternally), so men see
what you do, and what you do before men
demonstrates your relationship to God.

Point 1.
Justification by works is for the
benefit of men, not the benefit of God.
![Page 27: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Point 2.
Salvation in any dispensation is
always the same, it is always by faith;
salvation is always linked to believing
what God says enough to do it.
![Page 28: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Point 3.
Work gives you the right to demand,
and God will never be put in a
position where man can demand
anything of him.
![Page 29: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
If I were asked, “Why is a man damned?” I should answer
as an Arminian answers, “He destroys himself.” I should
not dare to lay man’s ruin at the door of divine sovereignty.
On the other hand, if I were asked, “Why is a man saved?”
I could only give the Calvinistic answer, “He is saved
through the sovereign grace of God, and not at all of
himself.”
My God is not a mere omnipotent being, who can rule dead
materialism; but he can rule free agents, leaving them
absolutely free, and yet effecting all his purposes with them.
God’s eternal purposes are accomplished, and yet men
remain responsible free agents both in their beginning and
in their ending.
—C.H. Spurgeon

Point 4.
God takes the posture of God, but
he does it from a position of love
and purpose.
![Page 31: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Definition:
Counted (or reckon) means to credit
to your account; to take an inventory
and calculate.
![Page 32: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Point 5.
God forgave David on the basis of
his faith in God, not on the basis of
what he could offer.
![Page 33: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Point 6.
It is possible to have the internal
reality without the external sign.
![Page 34: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
PUTTING TOGETHER THE TYPES
• Abraham is a type of the Father,
needing an heir
• Isaac is a type of the Son, needing
a bride
• Daniel is a type of the Holy Spirit,
needing nothing
![Page 35: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
DEFINITION:
Faith is walking by the
word of God instead of
walking by sight; hope is
believing the word of God
instead of believing the
circumstances.
![Page 36: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
FOUR STAGES IN ABRAHAM'S FAITH
1. Not weak in faith, v 19 (Gen 12)
2. Not staggering at faith, v 20 (Gen 13)
3. Strong in faith, v 20 (Gen 17)
4. Fully persuaded, v 21 (Gen 22)
![Page 37: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
DEFINITION:
Faith is being persuaded of
God’s promise so as to
usher in God’s
performance.
![Page 38: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
Point 7.
The perfection of the object of our
faith makes up for any imperfection
in the believer.
![Page 39: Ssm Romans Week 3 083009](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052622/559757811a28ab963c8b4628/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
