Here, you will find a recap of recent events and a reminder of upcoming opportunies. Since the last newsleer, much has been going on with the SSRC- Mellon Mays Graduate Iniaves Program, such as the PhD Retreat in February, the Proposal Wring and Dissertaon Development Seminar in March, the Dissertaon Wring Retreat in May, and the Annual Graduate Student Summer Conference in June. This year’s Summer Conference was the largest in years, with over 100 U.S. and South African fellows travelling to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for the three-day event. The University of New Mexico, one of our newest member schools, was host to this year’s conference. It was our great pleasure to have Dr. Jennifer Wilks (MMUF Bryn Mawr, 1992), Associate Professor of English at the University of Texas at Ausn, deliver the Mays address at the Summer Conference. We were also honored to have Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, Professor of African and African American Studies at Duke University, deliver the keynote address. All of this informaon, along with other Mellon-related News and Announcements, can be found on the Fellows Portal. Grant and event applicaon informaon is also on the Fellows Portal. We recently redesigned the layout, organizaon, and content of the Portal, so we urge you to consistently check this plaorm and to update your profile with any academic or employment changes. We are open to hearing any suggesons for how we can improve the Fellows Portal. Please email [email protected] with any suggesons.

(MMUF University of Cape Town ‘02), Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston, will give the Regional Lecture based on her forthcoming book Access

to Justice and Human Security. The lecture will take place at the Columbia University Faculty House on Nov. 2 at 6 pm with a reception to follow. RSVP to [email protected] by Oct. 26.

C A L L F O R V I D EO A B S T R A C T S We want to highlight our fellows’ diverse academic interests. From now until Dec. 1, we will be accepting two- to five-minute-long video submissions where fellows describe their academic projects in an accessible, interactive and engaging way! The top five videos will be featured on the Fellows Portal. Winners will get $25 Amazon gift cards!

The SSRC-Mellon Mays PhD Professional Development Conference will take place Feb. 17-19, 2018, in New York City. This event will be focused on the professional development of junior faculty with the goal of attaining tenure. We encourage all tenure-track assistant professors in their second through fifth years to apply. We will be accepting applications from Nov. 21 to Dec. 4, 2017 through the Fellows Portal.
