Sister School Visit -
Welcome Shaxi High School
It is with great pleasure that we welcome Shaxi High School students and teach-
er to our school. The 10 students and teacher, Leaf, will be with us for 1 week.
During that time they will be attending classes with their buddy BHS student and
staying at their homestay, in addition to taking in sights of Melbourne. The Minis-
ter for education is putting on a welcome function at the Zoo, to honour our
guests, as many schools across Victoria are hosting their Sister Schools.
Thank you to the following students and their families for agreeing to host a stu-
dent during this visit, Dylan Fulton, Andre and Emma Burborough, Olivia Severn,
Marjorie Devereux, Sarah Fearn-Wannan, Zach and Madeline Coleman- Bock. In
addition, Elise Pratesi and Curt Webb, who will buddy students during the day.
Thanks also to Janice Collins who is hosting their teacher, Leaf. We look forward
to sharing our school community and culture with our Sister School.
We welcomed the group at a whole school assembly which had global citizens as
its theme yesterday..

Parent Opinion Survey
2013 PARENT OPINION SURVEY – PLEASE COMPLETE & RETURN
The use of opinion data as an indicator of school performance is a very important step towards making
Blackburn High School the best school it can possibly be. The School and the DEECD annually run anony-
mous opinion surveys for staff, students and parents. We use this information to inform and direct our
plans for school improvement. Parents/guardians are randomly selected by the DEECD. The School does
not generate this contact list nor does it write the survey.
If chosen I would ask you to take the time to complete the survey as your opinions are important to us and
will be reflected in the management and organisation of the school. Many parents over the years will have
completed these surveys. The package was sent out in the mail last week. We request that parents com-
plete the questionnaire, put it in the envelope provided, seal the envelope, write the name and year level of
your child on the back of the envelope and return it to the General Office by Friday 2 August 2013.
If you have missed this deadline, it is possible to return them on Monday 5th August.
Attention: All Parents
I extend a warm invitation to you to attend the Official Opening of our new buildings.

RECONCILIATION IN
WHITEHORSE
Whitehorse Friends for Reconciliation (WFFR) invite residents to an evening of information giving and
discussion with local Indigenous and non-Indigenous people who have been involved with reconciliation
activities in Whitehorse.
Over the last 12 years WFFR has been working with local Indigenous residents, including the Mullum
Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place, schools and other community groups. This activity was aimed at
increasing awareness within the wider community about Aboriginal Australia. Greater understanding of
the rich culture and history of Aboriginal Australia as well as the challenges still faced by many of our
First Peoples provides great benefits for both groups.
Come and hear about projects that maybe occurred without your knowledge. You could be surprised
and inspired by the scope of some of this work.
The evening will have an informal format and feel free to bring your children.
TIME: 7.30pm Thursday 8 August
PLACE: Kerrimuir Neighbourhood House
57 Linda Ave, Box Hill North
RSVP: Howard Tankey pH: 9898 2514 or

Learning to Do
The pillar of learning is ‘Learning to Do’: All of us can learn and grow fully our talents through effort
and persistence, by pursuing excellence, exercising autonomy and encouraging flexibility, adaptabil-
ity and resilience whilst taking personal responsibility for our actions. I would encourage all students
to reflect on these statements as part of their learning.
Excursion Policy:
Please note that we have an excursion policy to ensure smooth organisation and full payment in or-
der that excursions may proceed as planned. The following protocols will apply for payments of ex-
cursions, so to avoid disappointment please read the timelines required carefully and take particular
note of the ‘no pay no go’ clause.
Payments should be completed at least 1 week prior for an excursion, the exception may be
sport teams who win and progress to the next level where the date occurs within 1 week of playing.
Payments must be completed 3 weeks ahead for excursions costing more than $100.00, with
the exception being the Year 7 camp because of its timing.
For excursions costing more than $100.00 parents should be given a time-schedule for pay-
ments with the first payment covering the costs of non-refundable deposits or payments. A ‘no pay no go’ policy will be applied to ALL students who have not met the deadline for Pay-
ment. (Unless there are financial hardships which should be communicated through our student
welfare team.) It is essential that this is followed.

Melba House gearing up for our
Fundraising Day on Friday 9th August
Hopefully by now you are aware that on Friday 9th August Melba House is holding its
annual fundraising day with all proceeds going to our local charity partnership in the
Eastern Emergency Relief Network. Over the past 10 weeks we have been con-
ducting a “Toiletries” drive, collecting as many items as possible to donate to those
who are in need of emergency care and supplies.
We want the whole school community to help us in collecting as many items as possi-
ble up until and on the day of Friday 9th August. This day will be our free dress day
in which our theme is “Denim”. We are also selling pizza for lunch for $2 per slice.
Many of the students have pre-ordered, however we will have some extra pizzas
available for those who wish to purchase on the day. We will also be selling cold
cans of drink for $1.50.
In exchange of wearing free dress we are asking ALL students to give us a
“Gold Coin” donation, or alternatively a toiletry item/s which will all be do-
nated to the Eastern Emergency Relief Network. Thanks for your support.

Melba Student Leaders enjoy Leadership Training On Monday & Tuesday of this week, our Melba student leaders all participated in the
Student Leadership Program which was run across the road at St Alfred’s Anglican
Church. Our students learnt a great deal about leadership, what makes a good lead-
er, becoming an effective leader, leadership styles and a whole lot about working to-
gether as a team amongst other things. This was a fantastic program and one that
our students will benefit greatly from. Thanks to Hayley Short, Daisy Agius, Tanya
Kononov, James Kearney, Alastair Barnes, Stephen Hives, Pete Vitnell, Tara Webb,
Noah Barr, Benji Sametz, Allegra De Gleria Clark, Luke Dema, Helena Lotoaniu, Neve
Anderson-Vague and Eamonn Field for showing great leadership and being such will-
ing participants.
The leadership training this week was so inspiring to listen to and become a better
leader. We learned about the values that leader’s show and how leaders can impact
on people. We also did heaps of fun activities and Mr Main and the other teachers
did a great job at organizing it . I thought this was great leadership training and I’m
already looking forward to next year

“I have a conviction that it is only when we are put at full stretch that we can realise
our full potential’ Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop.
On the last Tuesday of Term 2 Dunlop House held its annual school fundraiser
for the Sir Edward Dunlop Medical Research Foundation! The student leadership, Mr
Bate and Liga worked together as a team to organise and run a yummy BBQ that sold
out in the first 15 minutes of lunch! Our Year 7 students worked to create a lucky dip
and many students enjoyed donating fifty cents to enjoy a surprise! We also had a
footy handball competition. On behalf of the student leadership team, students and staff
of Dunlop House and the Medical Research Foundation we would like to thank every-
one for supporting our house and such a worthy cause. We are really proud of what we
as a school can do to help make a difference in our community and help others.

The Annual Weary Dunlop
Commemorative Service 12th July 2013
On the last Friday of the school holidays Zoe Duncan (Year 12) Jess Dun-
can (Year 10) Olivia Kourmadias and Sophie Peters (Year 7) along with
Mr Bate Went to the Commemorative Service on 12 July, at Weary’s statue
on St. Kilda Road during our school holidays.
This service was an important service that we all enjoyed. In the service
there was a fantastic speech that really motivated all of us! It really taught
us a lot by telling us how much you have to catch your dream just like Sir
Edward Dunlop did by establishing the Medical Research Foundation.
There was no more than 50 people at the Commemorative Service, majori-
ty of the attendees all personally knew Sir Edward Dunlop either as being
family, friends or past veterans showing their respects. The Service was a
great reflection of Weary Dunlop’s life and what he had achieved through
heroism, courage and determination. Thank you to Mr Bate for making it
possible for us to attend.

Second Hand Uniform
We are in urgent need of donations of second hand uniform. Many parents make use of this service and the sale of uniform supports the work of the Chaplain. We are in ur-gent need of any current uniform, but particularly need:
Winter Skirts
Sports uniform : rugby tops, polo tops, track pants
Jumpers
Perhaps the holiday time will provide an opportunity for sorting out wardrobes and locating uniform that no longer fits
anyone in the household. Any donations are always very gratefully received and can be left at the General Office at any time. A reminder that the Second Hand Uniform and Text Book shop is open every Wednesday morning from 8.15am to 8.45am. It is situated in the ground floor foyer at the western end of the multi storey block. A very sincere thank you goes to all those families who have already donated items this year.
For many of us the recent death of Luda continues to be at the forefront of our minds and our lives. Many of his friends will continue to be sad as the days and weeks ahead unfold. The Welfare Team at the school will continue to pro-vide support as needed or identified. Grief is such a tricky emotion to pin down and can manifest in a myriad of ways and often is not dealt with quickly. We often use the language of “getting over” someone’s death. I believe that rather than ‘getting over’ a death, over time, at best, we learn to take it into our lives and carry it with us in a way that doesn’t impact on our ability to go on living happily and productively. But this can take time and sometimes people (young and not so young) need some help to get there. If you continue to be concerned about the young people in your life who may be af-fected by this death (or indeed others) please don’t hesitate to get some advice or help for them. At school we have a number of information sheets aimed at parents and young people that may be helpful. You can contact any member of the welfare team if you would like some more information or help. We can continue to provide support here, or if appropriate suggest some outside referral sources for support. We are exploring options and observing how young people are travelling and will continue to be open to what else might be needed from the school’s perspective. We are always happy to have parent input. There will be a memorial service conducted here at school sometime in the months ahead when we have a suitable memorial to install at the school. Students will be invited to participate in this. Please don’t hesitate to contact me (or Amanda, Student Wellbeing Co-ordinator) at the school on 8804 6464 if you have any concerns.
Student Leadership Program
Page 10 Issue 23 2 August 2013
Jarrod Main Assistant Melba House Leader
On Monday and Tuesday of this week Blackburn High School ran a 2 day Student Leadership Program for all of the
leaders from each of the 4 houses. Day 1 was run by Trent Hotton from “Team Effect”. Trent taught our students a lot
about leadership, what good leadership looks like, what qualities a leader has, the different leadership styles, having difficult con-
versations and that good leaders are able to “see something – and do something”. He was able to have the students interacting with
many hands on activities and games in which team work and leadership were put into action.
Day 2 was a lot of hands on team activities so that the skills learnt from the previous day were being developed and embedded fur-
ther into our leader’s mindset. From being handcuffed together with ropes to a partner and having to get themselves out, to public
speaking tips and making paper water bombs, the whole day was about interaction with each other and building the capacity of our
students to lead.
At Blackburn High School we already have a fantastic vibrant culture in which our students work hard, they work together and they
respect each other and the staff. I was blown away by how great our student leaders already are, and what they were able to learn
and now put into practice back at school. I know that our school is in great hands with the talent and dedication of our student lead-
ers leading the way. I would like to thank all of them for giving their time and energy to making the program a huge success.
A big thank-you to the Assistant House leaders in Rod Bate, Tess Monda and Bronwyn Roach for helping me put together a fantas-
tic program that we can build on in the future.
Jarrod Main
On Monday the 29th and Tuesday the 30th, all the members from the leadership team took part in a leadership program at St. Al-
fred's Anglican Church across the road from Blackburn High School.
Day 1 consisted of 3 games: Tower of Straws, Paper Leap Frog and the Getting to Know You game. Although we played lots of
games we also went through leadership tips with Trent (our leader/co-ordinator for the day). By going through the tips of how to be
a good leader it helped us identify what areas in leadership we were best at and what areas we needed to improve in.
Day 2 also consisted of 3 games: Paper Water Bombs, Survival game and the Untangle yourself game. On this day we were more
focusing on teamwork and contributing as a whole group. Next we had tips on how to be a public speaker which is one of the key
things to become a leader no matter what situation or environment.
Overall everyone was absolutely delighted to be a part of the leadership program, especially those who might have needed that lit-
tle bit of advice about being a good leader/role model. I would definitely suggest this program to everyone, it is a once in a life time
experience and it is without a doubt a program that can help you in the future!!
By Tara Webb 7MA
“Leadership is simple, but not easy”. This was the quote that stuck most after our school leaders came out of the leadership train-
ing led by Trent Hotton. He gave us the tools to become good leaders. Personally, I leant that there are lots of qualities that make
up effective and respected leaders, and everyone has something to bring to the table. Kindly organised by Mr Main, this opportuni-
ty has benefitted us and the school community enormously. Thank-you

Year 8 Camp News
Page 11 Issue 23 2 August 2013
Year 8 Camp 2013
There will be no formal camp this year but instead there will be an alternative offered based on the
model that occurred with Year 7. The "camp" will consist of 3 days of excursions, with the total cost
at $100. Many people have already paid a $50 deposit for the Year 8 camp and in that case a further
$50 is required to attend. A “live-in” camp would cost in the order of $300 so three days of excur-
sions are 1/3 of the price.
The excursions are all very physical with some very challenging activities. The aim is to encourage
students to be physically active as well to help them develop ties in their social groups. Students will
do the activities with students from other classes. Due to the nature of some of the activities you will
need to complete a liability waiver form for your child to attend these.
The excursions are: to Trees Adventure in Belgrave, to MSAC (Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Cen-
tre) in South Melbourne, and an excursion to Bounce in Malvern. The last excursion was specifically
requested by a number of Year 8 students who have been there before and said it was great fun. Ex-
cursion details are:
Trees Adventure is a high ropes course based in Bel-
grave. Students are harnessed to a cable and are able
to climb amongst the trees in the Dandenongs. http://
treesadventure.com.au/
MSAC (Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre) is based
in South Melbourne and hosted the swimming events
for the Commonwealth Games. Students will be able to
use the waterslide, inflatable and wave pool. http://
www.msac.com.au/
Bounce is a massive indoor trampo-
line universe in Melbourne all about
jumping high and landing soft & safe.
Imagine over 100 interconnected
trampolines, over 500 square metres
of foam pits and padding to land on.
http://bounceinc.com.au/
The schedule for the excursions are as follows:
The excursions will occur during the last week of Term 3 and week 1 of Term 4. Trees Adventure
closes in the middle of winter and had limited availability for day excursions (another school booked it
for four days per week for three months!). Wednesday was the only available day. Trees Adventure
was by far the favourite activity that Year 7 students did at the beginning of the year. Feedback from
staff and parents who attended the activity were also positive.
Permission forms to attend camp were given out last week. If you have any further questions either
call me at school on 8804 6464 or email me at [email protected].
