A union at the centre of a �ght against the Sunbury secession project is con�dent the Andrews state government will grant its request for a compulsory new vote.

Australian Services Union (ASU) secretary Richard Du�y said he believed the push for a Sunbury council was being led by no more than 20 people bent on ‘‘personal power and prestige’’. Mr Du�y said the government was �nally aware the process had been rushed, was unsustainable and represented a ‘‘serious risk’’ to the community.

But Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell accused the union of using

New Sunbury vote closerscare tactics and said he remained hopeful the new council would come into existence on July 1 this year.

Hume council wrote to Premier Dan Andrews a�er the November state election asking for a review of the previous government’s decision to charge Hume $35 million over 10 years to underwrite the new municipality.

Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins has since had several meetings with the ASU and the council about the secession project.

�e union, which represents council employees, claimed Sunbury’s population would need to triple for a new municipality to be �nancially viable, and it warned that residents could face big rate rises and cuts to services.

Mr Du�y said there was too much uncertainty when the previous, non-compulsory vote which eventually led to the separation was held. ‘‘�e proposal is now much clearer. It’s just not sustainable and I think the residents of Sunbury are realising that.’’

Mr Du�y said about 2000 people had signed the union petition, which calls on the government to call a new vote.

‘‘We’ve had a success rate of about 90 per cent,’’ he said. ‘‘�e tide is �nally turning.’’

Supporters of a stand-alone Sunbury maintain the new council would have a growing rates base that would already be signi�cantly larger than many other Victorian municipalities.

Mr O’Farrell said 4050 hectares of land were earmarked for development and an independent panel report found that rates would not rise more than 5.5 per cent a year.

He said the former government had responded to a 20-year, resident-led campaign for an independent Sunbury, and claims that a noisy minority was behind the push were rubbish. ‘‘�ousands of people voted overwhelmingly in favour of separation.’’

Ms Hutchins would not be drawn on a timeframe for the review but said it would not be rushed.

‘‘�e Liberal government ignored serious issues with the viability of this proposal,’’ she said. ‘‘�ese still need to be resolved.’’

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Mount Macedon for the start of Victoria’s oldest road stage race last Thursday.

Fans cheered as close to 100 riders departed on the �rst stage of the 62nd Tour of Victoria after listening to Mount Macedon Primary School pupils sing the national anthem.

Top cyclists, including last year’s winner Simon Clarke, whizzed by Mount Macedon Hotel in a blur of colour for a second time after completing an eight-kilometre loop down and up the mountain.

The racing hotted up as they continued the 146-kilometre ride, passing through Kyneton, Malmsbury and Taradale on the way to Bendigo.

Orica-GreenEdge rider Cameron Meyer was �rst over the line, while teammate Clarke �nished fourth.

Meyer was part of a breakaway group of 20 riders that dominated the stage.

Mt Macedon Trading Post’s Brad Eshuys said shopkeepers on the mount had done a solid trade, with an in�ux of visitors to the town.

‘‘We had extra staff on as we had to do about 150 lunchboxes for the crews,’’ he said. ‘‘It was a busy morning.’’

performance in these areas caused by socio-economic variables, an increase in unemployment and only a slight appreciation in house prices.

Mr Zanesi said Hume was characterised by householders who commuted to work and were typically low-income earners.

“�ey can’t a�ord to buy closer to the city and are sensitive to interest rate movement,” he said.

�ousands of Hume home owners are struggling to make their mortgage repayments, a global ratings agency has found.

�e latest Fitch Ratings Mortgage Delinquency Report reported Hume as the Delinquency Report reported Hume as the Delinquency Reportworst-performing region in Australia by the value of missed payments and the number of delinquent mortgages.

Sunbury was among the 50 worst-performing postcodes in both categories.

But the report’s author, James Zanesi, said

Hume had witnessed some improvement in the past six months, with delinquencies down 1.26 per cent since peaking in March last year.

“Outer-ring suburbs normally show high levels of arrears, but this area is picking up because of low interest rates,” he said.

In the six months to the end of last September, mortgage performance in most regions of Australia improved or remained stable.

But Melbourne’s north-west bucked trends and overtook Sydney’s western suburbs as the country’s worst-performing region.

�e report predicted continuing poor

‘‘�ese include casual employment, people over-committing themselves when interest rates are low … and the general high cost of living,’’ he said.

‘‘�ere are a number of new estates in Hume where residents face all these issues.’’

Mr O’Brien urged anyone having trouble meeting their commitments to seek help early.

‘‘[�ey should] contact their lender as soon as possible to discuss options,’’ he said.

Mortgage stress rife in Hume

A wildlife rescuer has called on city planners to carefully consider the needs of native species as urban development pushes animals out of new residential areas around Sunbury.

Residents of new estates at Jacksons Hill told Star Weekly kangaroos were regularly seen bouncing down streets and getting stuck in people’s backyards.

Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network volunteer Karl Dawson, who is based in Sunbury, said while residential growth was o�en seen as a positive thing, it had its drawbacks.

He said the problem was more widespread than Jacksons Hill, where more than 3000 people have settled since the mid-1990s.

‘‘It’s a little bit depressing to see more and more estates everywhere,’’ he said. ‘‘What people see as vacant land was actually habitat.’’

Mr Dawson said he is o�en called to rescue kangaroos trapped in yards and he urged developers and planners to incorporate more land corridors for wildlife into estate plans.

Increased tra�c also creates major problems for animals, and motorists, he said.

In December last year, Star Weekly reported a steep increase in kangaroos killed on roads on the edge of Sunbury, especially Melbourne-Lance�eld and Sunbury-Riddell roads.

‘‘It’s not just kangaroos … even a lot of bird species won’t cross a road if they aren’t used to that,’’ Mr Dawson said.

Vacant land ‘was habitat’

A bold new Daylesford and Macedon Ranges tourism guide has won over some of the area’s toughest critics: the volunteers of the region’s information centres.

Regional tourism board general manager Judith Isherwood is con�dent the glossy booklet will be just as well received by prospective visitors.

She said about 120 volunteers had responded extremely positively to the guide and accompanying smartphone app at a preview held last week.

�e tourism region has one of Victoria’s biggest and most diverse footprints, covering

�e colourful booklet, a departure from the statewide ‘Jigsaw’ campaigns, was also the subject of much praise at o�cial launches in Mount Macedon and Daylesford on �ursday.

Ms Isherwood said the guide, which is heavy on high-quality photographs and pro�les, had been designed to be ‘‘a good read’’ as well as a tremendous resource.

‘‘We sought to look through the eyes of the visitor,’’ she said. ‘‘What we’ve ended up with is something that really feels like the region.’’

Ms Isherwood said while it was ‘‘hard to pull a lever and have a result tomorrow’’, she was con�dent the guide would inspire new visitors to sample all the region had to o�er.

‘‘We want to see more dispersal across the area so people who might come to Daylesford to see something there will decide to stay and tour the rest of the region,’’ she said.

About 30,000 copies of the guide will start appearing in visitor information centres from this week. It will also be available at www.dmrtourism.com.au.

People worried about their drinking shouldn’t be afraid to seek help, according to a free Sunbury counselling service.

Sunbury Community Health o�ers a free alcohol and drugs program for adults, young people and their families.

‘‘�e service takes a non-judgmental approach,’’ a spokeswoman said. ‘‘Our aim is to restore hope and meaning to people’s lives.’’

�e call follows the release of a VicHealth study which revealed that almost half of 2000 participants admitted to drinking at levels associated with signi�cant risk of short-term harm.

People are considered at risk if they drink more than four drinks on a single occasion, while authorities recommend no more than two standard drinks a day.

�e national survey found that 46 per cent of respondents had engaged in risky drinking at least once in the previous three months.

VicHealth chief executive Jerril Rechter said the results were alarming.

‘‘Eight of 10 Australians aren’t worried about their drinking when, in fact, many drink at a level that’s putting them at risk,’’ she said. ‘‘Alcohol is second only to tobacco as a preventable cause of drug-related death and hospitalisation.’’

We’ll help you, drinkers told

Leah Cook knows the emotional torment experienced by survivors of abuse, so the Kyneton woman has dedicated herself to helping children hurt by physical and sexual assault.

Ms Cook has founded Women Against Child Abuse (WACA), a charity aimed at making the lives of survivors a little easier.

�e group’s committee, which includes three women from the Macedon Ranges and six others from across Victoria, launched the charity last year with the intention of funding a camp for children a�ected by abuse or neglect.

�e response was so great they quickly expanded the vision to include an ongoing sponsorship program, allowing survivors to take part in activities to promote recovery and improve their self-esteem.

�ese range from Little Athletics and martial arts to dance, music and theatre.

Ms Cook, who was sexually and physically abused by a relative when she was �ve, said many of WACA’s volunteers had also experienced abuse.

‘‘�e group helps them as well, because it gives them an outlet away from work, away from school that allows them to make a di�erence to these kids,’’ she said.

Ms Cook said improving the mental health of children a�ected by abuse was crucial.

WACA, which is holding a Christmas-in-July fundraiser, is seeking donations of cash, goods for ra�es and promotions, and print services.

�e committee also wants to hear from sport and arts organisations willing to o�er discounts or donated services.

Motorists are being urged to obey new speed limits at a booming Sunbury school.

A new 40km/h speed zone was introduced at St Anne’s Catholic Primary School on Riddell Road, between Elizabeth Drive and Holt Street, on February 2.

Principal Noelene Hussey said the change was made by VicRoads following a parent-led campaign started early last year.

She said the reduced speed limit would greatly improve safety for the school’s 570 pupils.

‘‘Having cars go past at 40km/h, instead of

60, gives drivers more time to react, especially when there are lots of children and parents crossing the road,’’ Ms Hussey said.

A VicRoads spokesman said the limit would apply during peak hours, from 8-9.30am and 2.30-4pm, on school days.

Static signs have been put up to advise drivers of the reduced limits.

�e spokesman said drivers should take extra care and slow down when driving past any school.

Go slow, pupils ahead

Landholders have been congratulated for complying with �re prevention notices but have also been warned the danger isn’t over yet.

Mount Macedon CFA group o�cer Ian Hay said it was not time to relax despite milder conditions in January.

‘‘We’ve been quite lucky with the weather and there’s a lot of green grass for this time of year, but the potential [for bush�re] is still there,’’ he said.

‘‘We’ve had �res on days where there’s been a southerly wind.’’

Mr Hay said forecasts predicted hot weather for the rest of February and into March.

‘‘Some people may look around and think it’s green so they can burn o�, but restrictions will remain in place for some time,’’ he said.

Figures released by Macedon Ranges council show that 95 per cent of residents have complied with prevention notices issued this �re season.

�e council issued 753 notices this summer, down from 830 the previous year.

‘‘�e community has been very proactive this year in preparing for the �re season,’’ community safety manager Anne-Maree Lindner said.

‘‘Large-scale landowners and farmers in particular have played a major role.’’

Only 39 landholders have failed to comply with orders to clean up sites.

Where notices are not complied with, the council completes the necessary work and

hits landholders with a bill on top of a $1444 �ne.

Ms Lindner said the council would continue inspecting properties in summer and autumn and there were plans to get people to clean up during the cooler months.

“We’ll be approaching landowners throughout the year, especially those properties with large weed infestations,’’ she said.

Ms Lindner said the council had carried out slashing and weed reduction on its own land, roadsides and �re access tracks.

�e council had worked to create bu�er zones around towns in co-operation with landholders.

“We’ve improved township protection this year by doing more targeted slashing around town boundaries,” she said.

Ms Lindner said last month’s bush�re near Kyneton was put out quickly, partly because of prevention work by property owners.

“We saw with a recent �re in Kyneton that if you have a concentration of landowners doing their bit in a high-risk area, the safety impact can be signi�cant,” she said.

Ms Lindner said burning o� remained prohibited and anyone conducting an illegal burn would be prosecuted.

Guns grabbed, 10 arrestedAutomatic �rearms were seized and 10 people arrested as part of a probe into an armed robbery at a Sunbury fast-food outlet. Police executed warrants on properties in Werribee, Point Cook, Seabrook, Williamstown, Tarneit and Wyndham Vale about 7am last Tuesday. The raids followed the announcement of a $100,000 reward for information about the robbery of a cash delivery van in a carpark outside McDonald’s in Horne Street, Sunbury, on December 1 last year. Four men from Point Cook, aged in their 20s, and a Tarneit man, 33, were remanded and charged with various offences. The others were released pending further inquiries.

Education centres land cashKyneton Community and Learning Centre and the Macedon Ranges Further Education Centre will bene�t from new funding for local learning. The providers were among four centres included in a $78,000 package announced last week. Macedon Labor MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the money would allow education centres in Kyneton and Castlemaine to develop a model for shared administrative services and expertise.

Not everyone gets the chance to change the world on a major scale. But Macedon Ranges residents can play their part by buying a pancake from Gisborne Uniting Church’s Pancake Day stall on February 17. All money raised will go to UnitingCare, Australia’s largest non-government provider of community services. Pancake Day events held last year raised more than $90,000 for the organisation’s homelessness programs. Gisborne event co-ordinator Maree Clarke says Pancake Day is a fun way to bring people together. “We’re proud to support the work of UnitingCare, and we call on everyone in the community to come down, grab a pancake and get behind this great cause,’’ she said. Environmentalists are encouraged by the apparent return of a shy native animal in Sunbury’s Jacksons Creek. Seven platypuses were captured, tagged and released at the creek in Melbourne Water’s most recent survey – the best result since 1998.

General manager of waterways Gavan O’Neill said platypuses were notoriously reclusive, so con�rmation of their presence in the area was pleasing.

‘‘Findings such as those from the Jacksons

populations are thriving in the city’s creeks and rivers, although illegal �shing practices, including the use of nets and set lines, continue to pose a serious threat.

Ecologist Josh Gri�ths said excitement about the spring survey was tempered by the discovery of two dead platypuses in Warrandyte.

‘‘We suspect the use of illegal gill nets or set lines killed these animals, one of which was microchipped in a previous survey,’’ he said.

Mr Gri�ths encouraged anyone who saw a platypus in local waters to register their

Jacksons Creek EcoNetwork president Christina Cheers, who has taken part in previous platypus surveys, said the health of local waterways and riverbanks was improving.

‘‘We have groups all along the creek planting trees,’’ she said. ‘‘�ere are certainly lots of restored environments along the creek. �ere are gaps, but we’re getting there.’’

Platypus makes creek comeback

Invasive weeds, willow trees and hawthorn bushes will be removed from a heritage-listed Mount Macedon property as part of a project supported by Melbourne Water.

Historic Bolobek Farm, one of the most- visited private gardens in Australia, will be turned into a sanctuary of native plants and healthy waterways a�er receiving $310,000 from the authority’s river health incentive program.

�e project is aimed at rehabilitating vegetation along three kilometres of waterways, including a tributary of the Riddells and Barringo creeks.

�e property’s owners, Brigid and Hugh Robertson, plan to create an open woodland of eucalypts and riverbanks loaded with native shrubs and reeds.

‘‘At the moment, the willows are choking the natural vegetation and cattle pollute the creeks,’’ Mr Robertson said.

‘‘We’re looking forward to beautiful frontages that carry diverse biology and have cleaner water.’’

About 5000 native plants will be used to improve the forested headwaters which lead to Macedon Regional Park.

�e project is expected to take several years. Melbourne Water region manager Cameron

Howie said it would have �ow-on bene�ts for eight kilometres of waterways.

‘‘Willows and hawthorns are popular with many people, but they are actually weeds and have a negative impact on waterways and native plants,’’ he said.

Here’s a simple three-course meal for two that’s sure to win hearts.Champagne Oysters:Combine ½ cup champagne with one �nely chopped spring onion in a saucepan. Bring to the boil over a medium heat. Lower and simmer for 3-5 minutes, or until reduced by half. Add ½ cup thickened cream and season with white pepper. Simmer for 3-4 minutes or until reduced by half

again and the sauce is thick and creamy.Preheat grill to high. Scatter rock salt over the base of two, small heatproof serving dishes. Arrange 12 natural oysters on salt. Pour cream mixture among oysters. Cook under grill for 1-2 minutes or until golden. Set aside to cool slightly. Sprinkle with chopped chives and serve.Prawn Fettuccine:Preheat oven to 220°C. Combine one chopped red capsicum, 400g cherry tomatoes halved, two cloves of garlic thinly sliced, two fresh thyme sprigs and two tablespoons of olive oil on a baking tray. Roast for seven minutes. Add 200g peeled green prawns and roast until prawns curl and change

colour.Cook 180g fettuccine in boiling water until al dente. Drain. Return to pan. Add tomato mixture and pan juices, ½ cup mascarpone and 50g spinach to pasta. Toss to combine then serve.Pear Galette:Preheat oven to 180°C. Line baking tray and, using a round 10cm-diameter cutter, form two discs from store-bought puff pastry. Place on lined tray.Combine ½ tablespoon caster sugar and ½ teaspoon cinnamon in a bowl. Sprinkle half the sugar mixture over pastry.Arrange one green pear (halved, cored and thinly sliced), slightly overlapping, over pastry. Sprinkle with remaining sugar mixture. Bake for 10 minutes or until golden. Dust with

Gisborne Soccer Cub is looking forward to the challenge of competing in the FFV’s state league competition.

A�er playing in the FFV men’s senior competition on Sundays for the past �ve years, Gisborne switched to the state league competition, where they will play in ‘5 west’.

Club president Rodney Smith says the club is excited by the challenge.

“�e guys who played last season wanted to play on Saturdays and wanted to improve the football we’re playing,” Smith said.

“I asked the FFV if that was possible and they approved.”

�e move has helped the side attract 12 players for the coming season.

“We’re an amateur club and don’t pay players, so most of them have come through the junior system,” Smith said.

“�ose players who have made the move across have done their research about the club. �ey’ve seen we’ve moved to a state league competition and are on the way up.”

Gisborne also has a new coach in Andrew Hale.

“He’s played a lot of soccer at a lot of clubs in Melbourne so his knowledge is pretty good,” Smith said.

“He played for us late last season and we sat down with him before Christmas and he told us about his values and what he wants to get from the team. We decided he was right for the job.”

Smith said the move into state league would boost the club in several ways.

“It brings us exposure,” he said. “We have two women’s teams in the Sunday competition; we’re the only club in our district with two women’s sides.

“Hopefully, we’ll move through the ranks in future.’’

�e move to state league means Gisborne enters the FFA Cup and has been drawn to play Old Trinity in the �rst round of qualifying.

“We have to win the �rst couple of games to get into the main draw, but the exposure will be fantastic,” Smith said.

Fellow state league 5 west side Kyneton Districts will play Light United in FFA Cup qualifying.

It’s said that it doesn’t matter how you win your games as long as you win them.

�at was certainly the case for Riddell in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup on Saturday.

Not for the �rst time this season, the Bombers were made to work hard for victory.

�is win was of massive signi�cance for both the Bombers and their opponents, Sunbury.

A loss for the Bombers would have seen Woodend join them on top of the ladder.

For Sunbury, the loss means slipping outside the top four ahead of a tough run home.

Sunbury resumed at 4-67 needing 145 for victory.

�e Bomber bowlers ensured Sunbury didn’t get going on day two of the match, bowling them out for 116.

Matthew Livingstone took four wickets for the Bombers, while Jacob Brewer top-scored for Sunbury with 39.

Sunbury now needs a win against Woodend and will hope Gisborne loses to Wallan if they are any chance of making the �nals.

Gisborne and Sunbury face each other in the �nal round.

Woodend was made to �ght for its win over winless Wallan.

Having set 6-319 on day one, Woodend supporters would have been hoping for an easy victory.

Instead, Wallan put in its best batting performance of the year to make the match competitive.

Wallan got within 23 of victory before being bowled out for 298.

With Peter Manser absent, Warren Else led the attack, taking 5-80.

Bacchus Marsh’s slight �nals hopes remain a�er victory against Romsey.

Chasing Romsey’s 159, set on day one, Bacchus Marsh made 8-169 before declaring in a bid for an outright win.

Romsey had other ideas, �nishing the match at 3-63 in its second innings.

A focus on developing and helping expand the Sunbury Basketball Association is one of the key roles for the association’s new basketball operations manager.

Andrew Summerville was appointed in October and has jumped straight into work since arriving from Queensland.

“I had been in touch with Sunbury four or �ve years ago in regards to coaching here and, at the time, the situation was not right and I wasn’t able to move here,” Summerville said last week.

“I’ve stayed in touch since with [club president] Glenn Ogston as Sunbury progressed and there was a need for a full- time person.

“�e job was advertised and I applied and

“�ere’s a lot of work to do in a rapidly growing community.”

Summerville brings an extensive basketball background to the role, especially on the coaching side of things.

He has been assistant coach at NBL’s Brisbane Bullets, worked with NBA’s Toronto Raptors and coached college basketball in the United States.

“I’ve been a professional coach for about 13 years and coached all over the world,” he said.

“I want to give back a little and, hopefully, share some of my knowledge and foster the growth of the game.

“Coach education and coaching development programs are something I’m passionate about and something the association has identi�ed as a key area.

“I think in sport, in general, we spend so much time developing players and even referees and umpires. I don’t feel like we spend that same amount of time developing coaches and that’s something I want to do here on a small-scale, hoping that it will help

improve the knowledge of our players.”Summerville said one of the keys to

the association’s continued growth was developing the youth side of the program and ensuring that that expertise passes through to the Big V level.

“On the senior side of things, we’re still emerging and growing,” Summerville added.

“Our Big V results haven’t been fantastic, but I don’t think they have been terrible either. For us to get to the next level we have to implement some of the programs at junior level that the senior program will bene�t from in years to come.

“We need to put pathways in place. We do a great job of developing players, but a lot of them leave to head to other organisations.

“We don’t focus just on the senior sides here.”

Sunbury’s hopes of �nishing top of Bowls Victoria’s division 2 section 1 ladder received an unexpected boost on Saturday.

Sunbury did its job with an easy win over Rosamond, but it was Hoppers Crossing’s stunning win over Flemington/Kensington that threw the cat among the pigeons.

Top-placed Flemington/Keningston lost all four rinks to second-bottom Hoppers Crossing, conceding all 18 points in the process.

�at, coupled with Sunbury’s 17 (107)-1 (63) win, restored Sunbury to the top of the table. Carla Odgers won her rink 28-10, Elise Cowan won hers 33-14 and Mark Cowan won his 29-22.

“Four of our �ve sides are in �nals position,” Glennon said.

“Our second side had a big win and consolidated third on the ladder.

“�e side is outside the four but only half a game outside so it can still make �nals, too.”

Shock lift for SunburyGolfCompetitors managed to complete their rounds before rain fell at the Romsey Golf Club on Saturday. Playing in the �rst week of the RGC Summer Cup, players were confronted by warm conditions and dry fairways and were able to get the most out of their drives. Repair works to the 15th and 16th holes, needed because of damage by corellas, were to no avail as the birds continue to cause trouble. Club president Anthony Lakey won the stroke competition with 90-22-68 from Steve Poulton on 94-25-69. On Sunday, the club raised more than $1800 for Relay For Life with its charity golf day. Grumpy’s Mob won the four-player ambrose format from Loco Golfers, with 17 teams participating.

Diggers Rest Netball Club is looking to build on last year’s �nals berth in the upcoming Riddell District Netball League.

�e Burras snuck into the 2014 �nals a�er a draw against Rupertswood in the �nal round of the season.

Despite losing in the �rst week to the eventual premiers Melton Centrals, making the �nals was massive for Diggers Rest.

New coach Amy Carroll said team members now want to focus their attention on making �nals over the next few years.

Carroll, who was named goal attack in the RDNL team of the year, said she was excited by the new coaching challenge.

“Our A-grade coach Mel Lo�s stepped down and a few of the girls asked me to take on the role.

“I said I didn’t mind doing it. I have done netball clinics before, but I’ve done no speci�c coaching.

“Sarah [Carroll], my sister-in-law, is coaching the B-grade side and Courtney Sherwell is coaching the C-grade and under-18 sides. We are all working together.”

Unlike a lot of teams, the Burras didn’t start training until a�er Christmas. �ey held their �rst session last week.

“We did trials in December and decided to wait and start again on Tuesday,” Carroll said.

“All the girls have had programs over Christmas and have come back pretty �t. We have two months to get up to standard.”

Carroll said a couple of players had been added to the A-grade side from last year.

She said the team was looking to get o� to a better start than last season and build on what the club had achieved.

“We have some tough games to start the season, so they may be a bit hard.

“We’d like not to leave it up to the last round to make �nals, if possible.

“We had not played well at the start of the [last] season … it just clicked in the end and it was a big surprise to make �nals.

“It’s a great feeling and we want to at least achieve that again.

“�e next few years, the club is only going to get stronger and, hopefully in a couple of years, look at trying to reach grand �nals.”

East Sunbury’s development continues to grow in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association.

�e club, which has been in the competition for six years, is on top in the overall club championship.

With a top spot also in B-grade, that side looks set for a �nals berth in its �rst year at this level.

B-grade coach Mark Hourigan says these are exciting times for the club.

“Overall, it’s a really proud feeling at the moment.

“�ree of our four senior sides look set for �nals, while all our juniors teams are in a good position, too.”

On Saturday, East Sunbury jumped to second on the ladder in B-grade with a good win over Ash�eld.

Needing only 24 runs to win on day two, Ash�eld made Sunbury �ght for it.

“In the �rst hour, we got only about 10 runs,” Hourigan said.

“Ash�eld fought it out and we passed the total only half an hour before tea.

“We gave the young fellows a chance a�er that and they threw the bat a bit, which was good to watch.”

Hourigan said it was also good to see younger players stand up under pressure.

“We have three current or past coaches in the side, so the juniors get three views on things.

“One of the younger boys got hit in the head by a bouncer and kept on batting. �e short ball is part of the game and he’s learnt how to play that. Cody McDorman came in for his �rst game a�er playing well in D-grade and Jaxon Mobilio, a 17-year-old, has become one of our opening bowlers.”

East Sunbury’s win all but knocks Ash�eld out of �nals contention. It now sits six points outside the top four.

�is result means Macedon slips to fourth on the ladder.

St Anthonys’ spiral continues with the side falling out of the top four a�er sitting in second place just weeks ago.

Despite defeat, St Anthonys pushed ladder leaders Rupertswood all the way on Saturday.

Defending 199, St Anthonys saw Rupertswood pass the total with just two wickets in hand. No.9 Karl Sutherland and captain Jay King, batting at 10, made 34 and 32 respectively to see their side over the line.

Bacchus Marsh defeated Sunbury United in the other match of the round.

Overthrow gets determined Dragons over the line�e Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntrye Cup is proving to be one of the closest in years.

Saturday’s result between Sunbury United and Gisborne, when the game came down to the �nal six balls of the match, is just the latest twist in the tail.

United entered the round in third spot and made 261 on day one of the match against the ��h-placed Dragons.

�e Dragons started their innings on the second day knowing a win was important for their �nals hopes.

Opener Eamon McKenna led the Dragons chase early and was ��h out for 96 with the team total on 144.

United’s experienced bowling line-up, including captain-coach James Hughes, made sure the Dragons didn’t establish long partnerships and when they slipped to 7-193, United appeared to be favourites to win.

But the determined Dragons weren’t �nished, coach Daniel Trevillian saying they had con�dence all through the batting line-up.

“It was certainly in the balance for a while,” he said.

“We always have to stay positive and back ourselves to get the win.”

Ryan Baker, who �nished 48 not out, and number 11 Craig Jones got the Dragons over the line, with a bit of luck.

“We can only control what we are doing and we are just preparing to play Wallan,” Trevillian said.

“We’ve won the last two games and hoping to continue that into the �nals.

“Against Wallan, who played some good cricket against Woodend, we’re hoping to make sure we get �rst innings points and go from there.

“At the start of the season our ultimate goal was to make �nals and we want to lock in our spot.”
