Hume and the Macedon Ranges have some of the worst ambulance response times in Melbournes north and west, new gures released by the state government reveal.

But Macedon Labor MP Mary-Anne omas, who is part of a parliamentary committee looking into the states ambulance crisis, is condent proposed reforms will arrest a dramatic slide in performance.

e committee, which also includes Woodend paramedic Jan Einsiedel, last week released an interim report that included

considerable fatigue and low morale, and close to 45 per cent of ambulance ocers said last year they would not recommend the service as a good place to work.

e report recommends greater collaboration between health services for emergency patient care, improving community awareness about when to call triple-0 and better training to improve call-taking and dispatch services.

Ms omas said the government had already promised $60 million for initiatives to reduce response times and $40 million to upgrade ambulance stations, equipment and vehicles.

Our paramedics are among the most

emergency response times for 2013-14, which were withheld by the previous government.

Macedon Ranges paramedics responded to code one callouts within the standard of 15 minutes in 48.62per cent of cases, down from 54.77per cent in 2008-09.

In Hume, ambulances responded to 62.68 per cent of code one calls within 15 minutes, compared to 79.94 per cent in 2008-09.

e report found that in recent years almost 60 per cent of all emergency calls were classied as code one, but paramedics found on arrival that such a response was not required.

    It also revealed paramedics reported

dedicated and hard-working people in our community, she said.

ey deserve to be respected and supported so they can save lives.

A Kyneton ambulance ocer welcomed the reports focus on paramedic welfare. Fatigue is a massive, massive issue, he said.

e paramedic urged the government to implement the committees recommendations.

Were always going to disagree on some things, but its nice to nally be listened to, he said.

Free tai chi classes will be held in Sunburys Village Green every Wednesday from this week, weather permitting. The 20-minute lessons, presented by the Sunbury Tai Chi Alliance and Sunbury Community Health (SCH), will take place at 12.30pm and 1pm. Reserve sees the lightGisbornes Gardiner Reserve will soon be able to host night games following the installation of light towers. The $350,000 project, including reconstruction of a netball court, is funded by Macedon Ranges council, the state government and local sports clubs.

A Macedon Ranges group that encourages drivers and cyclists to share the road has expanded into Sunbury.

Bike Safe spokeswoman Margaret Douglas says the present campaign, including yers, social media posts and a mobile billboard, is reminding motorists to leave plenty of space when overtaking cyclists.

In winter, the focus will shi to cyclists, encouraging them to wear bright clothing to ensure they are easily seen.

Ms Douglas said research consistently showed that cars had been travelling too close

to cyclists in the majority of crashes involving bikes on country roads.

Police last week helped move the volunteer- run groups billboard from Melbourne-Lanceeld Road to Gap Road in Sunbury.

Sunbury cyclist and Bike Safe supporter Andrew Smeal said reaction had been positive. Weve also been going around to businesses, putting up yers, he said. People have been happy to get on board and help spread this important message.

Drivers are being urged to slow down and look out for wildlife on Sunbury and Macedon Ranges roads aer a big spike in the number of animals being treated for injuries by volunteers.

Data released by the Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network (MRWN) reveals the number of animals treated by its volunteers in 2014 was up 300 on the previous 12 months.

A total of 1897 animals were attended to last year, 876 more than the 1021 recorded in 2011.

Network volunteer Linda Healy said the gures were a drop in the ocean to the actual numbers out there, with many incidents going unreported.

She said that while some callouts were for animals hurt by res or fences, a large percentage related to road incidents.

Within the last month, theres been eight wallabies hit on Romsey-Woodend Road, Ms Healy said.

People just need to help by slowing down a bit. A few minutes longer for your journey is not that big a deal.

A baby wombat was recently orphaned aer its mother was struck by a vehicle on Ashbourne Road, Woodend.

A truck driver called rescuers for help aer noticing the baby trying to climb back into its mother pouch. e wombat will be cared for by MRWN until it is ready to be released into the wild.

Family violence reports in the Macedon Ranges have fallen for the rst time in four years.

Inspector Ryan Irwin said he was hopeful police data released last week was a sign increased public awareness and a focus on repeat oenders was starting to pay o.

But with an average of more than one family incident reported every day, he said the numbers remained too high.

e statistics, the rst released by the state governments new Crime Statistics Agency, cover 2014.

ey show 388 family incidents were recorded in the Macedon Ranges, compared with 413 in 2013 194 reports were received in 2010.

Inspector Irwin said the Macedon Ranges safety committee was preparing a submission to the Family Violence Royal Commission, urging the state government to address a lack of local counselling services.

Quite oen we nd people are being referred to Bendigo or Melbourne for counselling because local services are just stretched to the limit, he said.

Inspector Irwin said local police were also keen to roll out behavioural change programs for men. ey are also trying to arrange a safe room at Kyneton Magistrates Court so survivors of domestic violence are no longer forced to wait beside their alleged abusers.

Total crime in the Macedon Ranges was up 17.1 per cent, with Inspector Irwin citing burglary, car the and drug oences as areas of concern.

Almost 180 drug oences were detected in 2014.

He said a rise in drug oences could largely be attributed to the spread of crystal

methamphetamine (ice). We know that ice is more prevalent, but again, weve been taking a zero-tolerance approach, he said.

In Hume, total crime was up 15.3 per cent. Family violence incidents increased from 2749 reports in 2013 to 2965 last year.

e of motor vehicles remains a signicant problem in Hume, which led the state with

    1064 car thes (up from 892 in 2013 and 883 in 2012).

Hume crime prevention ocer Jacqui Newman said too many people were leaving themselves open to opportunistic thieves.

We really need people to be smart about this, she said. ese thes are oen preventable.

Close to 15,000 people will descend on Hanging Rock when British rocker Rod Stewart returns to the Macedon Ranges this Saturday.

Police and the council are urging concertgoers to carpool or use a free shuttle bus service departing from Woodend Community Centre.

Macedon Ranges highway patrols Sergeant Geo Neil urged motorists to be patient when entering and leaving the concert venue. People just need to trust the trac controllers, he said. ere is a plan, and thats to get people in and out safely. Parking is free for drivers if they have four or more people in the vehicle.

Sergeant Neil said heavy trac was expected, with carparks opening at midday. e Rock will be closed to all other visitors. Saturdays concert will wrap up a busy summer of events at the picturesque venue, which hosted e Eagles on February 28.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson said people should be prepared for delays. For your own safety, dont plan to leave Hanging Rock on foot. e best way to avoid delays and stay safe is to use the free shuttle service from Woodend.

Stewart, who wowed about 12,500 fans at Hanging Rock in 2012, will take the stage at 8.15pm. Support acts include late- 90s chart toppers Taxiride and former Australian Crawl frontman James Reyne.

A Sunbury greyhound owner wants muzzling laws changed in the wake of the live-baiting controversy that has rocked the industry.

Jennifer Davis said the requirement to muzzle dogs in public created a perception that the dogs were inherently dangerous.

Ms Davis, who owns two former racing dogs, said the temperament of greyhounds wasnt the problem and the law requiring them to be muzzled came from a time when the practice of live-baiting was even more widespread.

She said there were enough local laws to dictate that dogs must be controlled in public, making compulsory muzzles unnecessary.

e muzzle does put people o, she said. Regardless of the live-baiting issue, we want to know why this whole breed has to be muzzled.

Ms Davis is a member of the Greyhound Equality Society of Australia, a group that says muzzling laws are outdated and should be wound back, as recently happened in Queensland.

Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) welfare manager Linda Beer said muzzling remained a requirement of the Domestic Animals Act.

Dogs can qualify for an exemption through the organisations adoption program.

ey are awarded a green collar once they have passed the test, meaning they can be in public without a muzzle, Dr Beer said.

All greyhounds in Victoria, whether they have passed the temperament test or not, must be on a leash in public areas.

But Ms Davis said GRV was the only authority allowed to adopt out muzzle-free dogs.

She said dogs rescued by private groups or sold by trainers had to undergo a four-day kennel stay to be assessed, costing $150 on top

    Mad at muzzling laws

Jennifer Davis and her dogs. (Joe Mastroianni)

of adoption fees and making former racing dogs a less attractive option.

She said she feared the recent greyhound racing scandal would lead to more dogs being abandoned or euthanased.

Rescue groups have already reported a signicant increase in dogs being surrendered, Ms Davis said. e entire industry is in

turmoil. She said that despite the odds stacked against them, greyhounds could make amazing and loyal pets.

Greyhounds are the best breed Ive ever owned, she said.

eyre extremely gentle. eyre quirky and can be a bit lazy, but theyre an absolute pleasure to have around.

Safe havenA monument recognising Kynetons Mounted Rie Corps is being relocated to the towns police station. The memorial, unveiled at Kyneton Mechanics Institute in October last year, was put into storage over summer after undergoing accidental damage and being scarred by vandals. Monument committee secretary Larina Strauch said the monuments relocation to somewhere that would be under 24-hour surveillance was a win for the community. The monument was recently displayed at Point Cooks RAAF museum and the Avalon Airshow.

    10 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 24, 2015

Anew imaging test is now available in Sunbury to combat what has been described as one of the nations silent diseases.

Lake Imaging Sunbury recently installed a brand new Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) unit to aid in the detection of osteoporosis.

DEXA is a quick, easy and painless imaging test that measures the density of the bones in patients considered to be at high risk of developing osteoporosis.

It is the test recommended by Osteoporosis Australia for detecting the disease.

Clinical director Don Barrie said the new system was the best on the market, and he was excited that Lake Imaging could offer the latest technology for patients in Sunbury and surrounding suburbs.

In addition to DEXA scanning, the system is able to complete body composition scanning, which is being well received around the country by a range of people looking to manage their weight and monitor their muscle mass. This is something that was previously unavailable in Sunbury, Dr Barrie said.

Osteoporosis Australia reports that 4.74 million Australians currently suffer from osteopaenia (low bone density, an early sign of osteoporosis) or osteoporosis itself. That gure is expected to be as high as 6.2 million people by 2022.

Lack of early detection leads to broken bones caused by the slightest injury, with a long recovery time altering the lifestyle of the sufferer.

Early detection of osteoporosis can result in medication being prescribed to stop the disease progressing and decreasing the risk

of broken bones and long term-suffering for patients.

Risk factors for osteoporosis include: Family history Low calcium intake and Vitamin D levels Lifestyle factors such as low physical activity, smoking, excessive alcohol, weight (over or underweight)

Scan makes no bones about it

A new DEXA unit at Lake Imaging could help early detection of osteoporosis. (Kristian Scott)

Medical conditions such as low hormone levels, long-term use of corticosteroids, coeliac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic liver and kidney disease and thyroid conditions.

It is recommended that men and women over 50 speak to their GPs.

On about 4000 square metres of edge-of-town seclusion, this wonderful house has a vast living zone (living, dining, rumpus) under vaulted ceiling with exposed (painted) beams and clerestory windows and oorboards below. A gas log re set in a ceiling-high panel forms a dramatic focus. Four bedrooms (with wardrobes) share a shower room and a huge bathroom with dual vanity basins and an enclosed shower stall. The all-white kitchen under vaulted ceiling has a stack of cupboards, dishwasher and stainless-steel 900mm cooker. A raised timber deck has views down to a fenced, in-ground pool totally private, sheltered by tall perimeter trees and next to a wedge of lawn. Ducted heating and cooling, vegie garden and a leafy driveway to a freestanding double garage/workshop continue the attractions.

In a small court with loads of kerbside appeal, this is a property with elegance right to the bone, a place that sings with quality, class and substance inside and out.

There wont be a thing for new owners to do, with new carpet and paint throughout, and gardens on the 1263-square-metre block laid out with air and manageability.

And with the house set well back from the street, its in the front yard where all the action happens in terms of entertainment and kids play, the latter made street-safe via an automatic entry gate. Its a well-considered set-up that encourages neighbourly interaction and relaxed parental supervision.

Now the house. Entry is into a tiled foyer anked by a carpeted study through double doors, and a carpeted lounge-dining room with bay window. Another set of double doors then opens to a rumpus room with lovely back gardens on view. Yet another large, light-lled living zone is a tiled family-meals area which has a Ned Kelly wood heater set within a deep charcoal-painted recess, and a door to the pergola area more about that later.

The kitchen has terracotta-toned oor tiles, loads of Tassie oak cupboards, black granite benchtops, dishwasher, wall oven and gas cooktop and front garden views from behind the sink which could make a potentially excellent servery to the pergola.

The main bedroom off the foyer has a ceiling fan (in all bedrooms), two sets of mirror-faced wardrobes, a door to the side garden, and an en suite with enclosed toilet, and a picture window as shower splashback that evokes the feeling of showering outdoors among the tree ferns: lovely.

Three more bedrooms, each with feature wall, robes and roman blinds, are down a carpeted hallway from the living hub, as are a large powder room, main bathroom, and a laundry with a stack of storage.

In the front yard, along with a timber (carpeted, no less) cubby house, extensive paving (parking space and

A brick walkway heads from here around to the back where a mulched play area under a giant cypress, a large shadecloth-covered pergola and beautiful tropical gardens are a real treat.

Even more attractions include gas ducted and zoned slab heating, new evaporative cooling, two garden sheds, two water tanks, automatic irrigation system, double carport and remote-controlled freestanding double garage.
