eliminate inequality between men and women could help solve the problem.

Gender inequality and poor attitudes towards women are one of the key underlying causes of family violence, Ms Richardson said.

Ms Spence said emergency housing needed major investment.

Every day, the places in Bendigo are full, the places in Melbourne are full, Ms Spence said. eres just nowhere for women escaping family violence to go. Funding has to stop being an excuse.

Also on Friday, organisations helping schools teach students about healthy relationships were given a boost, with Ms Richardson announcing

    By Matt Crossman

What price do we put on a life? at was the question posed by a family violence survivor at a community forum in Kyneton on Friday.

Woodends Belinda Spence was among more than 50 people who took part in the forum, held as part of the state governments month-long Victoria Against Violence campaign.

Counsellors, teachers, students and MPs, including Family Violence Prevention Minister Fiona Richardson and Macedon MP Mary-Anne omas, were also involved in the event, titled Lets Talk About Respect. Ms Spence said it was a good chance to

dispel myths about the problem that aected thousands of Victorian women every day. Its not always physical: in my case it was emotional abuse, control and isolation, she said.

Ms Spence said that when her former partner, who has since died, couldnt get to her he stalked her on social media and even killed her daughters pets.

e forum, which also involved senior police and Centre for Non-Violence chief executive Margaret Augerinos, heard that family violence was a problem aecting people across the community and not restricted to certain neighbourhoods or socio-economic groups. Survivors and experts said continuing to

a $100,000 program during a visit to Gisborne. Run in conjunction with the Domestic Violence Resource Centre Victoria, the Partners in Prevention program will support a pilot initiative being run at schools, including Gisborne and Kyneton secondary colleges.

Education Minister James Merlino, who joined Ms Richardson for a tour of Gisborne Secondary College, said schools would get help to teach young people how to foster safe relationships.

e Gisborne and Kyneton schools are among 19 involved in a trial that will be used to develop a program to be rolled out for prep to year 10 students across the state from next year.

Houses in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges are less likely to be burgled than most other places in Victoria.

An analysis of crime data released by the RACV last week reveals that one in every 80 houses in Sunbury was hit by thieves in 2014-15, compared to the state average of one in 67.

While encouraging, the gure was still down on 2013, when closer to one in every 90 houses was burgled.

Results were even better across much of the Macedon Ranges, with one in 107 houses burgled in Gisborne and one in 120 houses at Romsey.

Kynetons burglary rate was slightly higher at one in 75.

e gures are far better than many areas in Melbournes west, with one in 19 houses targeted at Williams Landing and one in 24 in Broadmeadows/Dallas.

Regional Victorias burglary hotspot was Shepparton, where one in 25 houses were burgled in the past nancial year.

RACV home services general manager Aaron Flavell said people could reduce their chances of being burgled by increasing the risk of crooks being nabbed.

ieves look for easy entry into homes so make sure that your doors and windows are well secured with locks made to Australian standards, and that you lock up when you go out, even for short periods, he said.

As reported by Star Weekly, Macedon Star Weekly, Macedon Star WeeklyRanges police have focused on the from farm sheds and unattended properties in recent months, following a spike in oences.

A Gisborne woman who has spent 12 years battling mesothelioma is urging the federal government to add a revolutionary, but costly, medication to the pharmaceutical benets scheme.

Despite her ill health, Louise Williams has spent many years ghting on behalf of others diagnosed with lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.

Mrs Williams said that before starting a new medication, Keytruda, in April this year, she couldnt get out of bed.

I was dying, she said. I needed oxygen 24/7, I had severe back pain, bone pain, nausea my body was shutting down.

In 1985, her father, who worked in the building industry, was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma. He died six months later aged 54.

In 2003, Mrs Williams, then 47, was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma. In 2009, it became pleural mesothelioma. She has had large tumours removed, and she underwent many courses of chemotherapy before starting on Keytruda.

Mrs Williams said her life had been transformed aer 12 doses of the drug, which encourages the bodys immune system to ght tumours.

It doesnt kick in immediately, but aer the third dose my scan showed signicantly reduced tumours and uid, she said.

Aer numbers four and ve, I started to ease up the oxygen and was walking better and doing basic household things.

Between ve and six I thought, well, whats wrong with me?

My quality of life is back. Im able to do everything I used to be able to do.

    Crusader ghts for cancer drug

Louise Williams life has been transformed by a cancer drug. (Matthew Furneaux)

But Keytruda, which is listed on the PBS for melanoma but not for asbestos cancers, doesnt come cheap.

Depending on body weight, a single dose can cost between $6000 and $11,000, and it must be administered every three weeks.

At the moment its usually prescribed at the end of life because its so expensive, Mrs Williams said. I believe once its on the PBS, oncologists will be able to try it earlier.

Keytruda is getting results with more than 20 dierent cancer varieties around the world.

With mesothelioma its showing a success rate of 60 to 70 per cent, Mrs Williams said. Chemotherapy is about 20 per cent. Everyone should have this option.

e eorts of Mrs Williams, who has spoken at several international conferences, were recently praised in Federal Parliament by McEwen MP Rob Mitchell.

I do not think I have met a person with such great inner strength and courage, he said.

We will keep ghting to help her and hopefully other victims get the support and medication they need to help them lead full lives.

Mrs Williams, who hopes to present a 6000-signature petition to Health Minister Sussan Ley soon, said she believed victory was near.

We will get it done, she said. I know we will.

A spokesman for Ms Ley did not respond before deadline.

Everyone should have this option we will get it done - Louise Williams

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges wildlife activists have condemned plans to cull kangaroos on Melbournes fast-growing urban fringes.

ey say better planning would be a preferable solution to the problems arising from rapid housing growth to the citys north and north-west.

e number of kangaroos being rescued by groups, such as Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network (MRWN), has soared in recent years, from 594 in 2011 to almost 1300 last year.

Mr Temby acknowledged that a cull plan would be controversial. [But] if they are culled, you are talking about reducing pain and suering.

MRWN spokeswoman Fiona Corke said killing kangaroos to allow more development was hardly a radical solution.

Its what theyve always done, but people expect better now, she said.

To call for a cull so developers can continue to make money is appalling.

Ms Corke said while councils had tried to bring in buer zones and wildlife corridors

Many call-outs relate to roos being hit by cars, with the Melbourne-Lanceeld Road among the hotspots, while animals have also become trapped in backyards in areas such as Sunburys Jacksons Hill.

Wildlife consultant Ian Temby, who last week submitted to the Environment Department a proposal to manage kangaroos in urban areas, said a cull was the most humane solution.

e alternative is that kangaroos get killed by cars, he said. Its a consequence of development; there are costs.

in some areas, the bigger problem was state planning laws.

e real issue is that developers arent forced to make way for wildlife and so it sort of becomes nobodys problem, she said.

Macedon Ranges mayor Graham Hackett said the council, as part of a group of Loddon Campaspe councils, had lobbied for better kangaroo management but did not consider culling to be a viable option. Both Macedon Ranges and Hume councils require management plans limiting eects on native wildlife before developments can go ahead.

Outdoor swimming pools in Lanceeld and Woodend have been spruced up for the summer season. New shade structures have been put up in Lanceeld, while purication systems have been upgraded at both pools. Macedon Ranges mayor Graham Hackett says water saving initiatives, including the installation of dual-ush toilets, will be carried out in coming months. We are lucky to have such great facilities and I encourage people to get outdoors and enjoy them, he says. Opening times for the swimming season, which started on Saturday and nishes on March 14, will vary according to weather forecasts, with extended hours on hot days. Both pools will be open every day that the Melbourne temperature is forecast to hit 24C, except Christmas Day.

Landlls in Melbournes north-west may have to absorb all the citys waste within the next 10 years as tips in the south-east begin to close, a new dra waste plan has proposed.

e state governments recently released dra Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Implementation Plan (MWRRG) sets out how Melbournes capacity to manage waste will be managed over the next decade.

Melbournes landlling needs to occur in the north-west, the report states. If the north-west catchment managed all metropolitan disposal needs, some landlls would be required to operate at a signicantly higher capacity.

How this might aect communities, businesses and the environment will need to be further assessed in considering whether land lling in the north-west may be an optimal long-term solution.

Hume and Whittlesea council sta were briefed on the dra plan last week.

Representatives of both councils said that,

recycling facilities and new kerbside bins that accept garden waste, and fruit and vegetable scraps.

e plan says that while the metropolitan region has adequate infrastructure capacity, most potential capacity is in the north-west.

It says the Clayton/Dingley cluster of landlls in the south-east will close in the next 18 months to three years, with the three remaining landlls at Hallam, Lyndhurst and Cranbourne continuing for another 10 years.

Beyond 10 years, planning decisions must consider whether it is optimal for all of

at this point, no details had been shared about which landlls in the north would be expected to expand operations.

Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn said locals are furious. He asked Environment, Climate Change and Water Minister Lisa Neville to reassure his constituents that Melbournes north and west would not be the dumping group for millions of tonnes of stinking waste.

Ms Neville told Star Weekly there would be chances for residents and businesses to have a say before the waste plan is nalised.

Sunbury could be among the electorates that will decide the next state election, Opposition Leader Matthew Guy believes.

Mr Guy visited the towns train station last week to talk to residents in the wake of the state governments decision to reverse controversial public transport changes. He said every seat was in play.

[Sunbury] swung towards the Liberals last time, even though we lost the election, he said. It is a bellwether seat, and will continue to be one.

All sides of politics are going to really have to put their best foot forward to get the trust of Sunbury residents.

Mr Guy said the communitys co-ordinated eorts to ght train timetable changes had been noticed.

When communities are organised in that sort of way, it gets results, he said.

I think Sunbury is now putting itself well and truly on the political radar.

Repeating his promise to give Sunbury its own council in the rst term of a future Liberal government, Mr Guy said the recent introduction of rate-capping made a split from Hume more straight forward.

But Sunbury Labor MP Josh Bull said this years transition audit made it clear a standalone council wouldnt work.

With a 14.5 per cent rate hike and cuts to services, and all on a legally questionable premise, the former Liberal government tried to sell the residents of Sunbury a pup, Mr Bull said.

A new group formed to help cyclists explore Sunburys many bike paths and advocate for life-saving upgrades is encouraging people to join a family ride this Sunday.

Members of the Sunbury Bicycle Users Group (BUG) will lead cyclists down paths near Blind Creek, Spavin Drive, Salesian College, Reservoir Road and Emu Bottom homestead, aer meeting at Lions Park on Riddell Road at 1pm.

    Member Hector Bugeja said the

Bid to complete the cyclePeter, Ray, David, Hector and Nadia (front) and kids Rayah, Fraeya, Anita, Julian and Corey are part of a new Sunbury BUG. (Damjan Janevski)

recently-formed group would push for improvements to the local bike network, including links to Goonawarra.

Sunbury has a good established pathway network which is a very well-kept secret, he said. However, there are key gaps, which push riders onto the road.

Mr Bugeja said cyclists want a path, which stops at the Spavin Drive lake, extended. e group is also involved in a campaign for a relatively simple upgrade on a dangerous section of Vineyard Road, near the Calder Freeway overpass.

As reported by Star Weekly, the shared Star Weekly, the shared Star Weeklypathway currently ends at Moore Road, about 200 metres short of the overpass, forcing cyclists and pedestrians heading for Diggers Rest to cross onto the road.

With vehicles trying to enter the freeway or continue to the overpass, Mr Bugeja said it was a nasty mix. He said there had been many near-misses involving cars, pedestrians or cyclists at the busy site.

Mr Bugeja and Sunbury BUG convenor Robert Irvine have written to Roads Minister Luke Donnellan and Sunbury MP Josh Bull.

Work has begun on a long list of road, intersection and footpath upgrades in the Macedon Ranges.

More than a dozen projects are listed on the councils summer works schedule, part of its $4.1 million road and footpaths budget for 2015-16.

Deputy mayor John Connor and mayor Graham Hackett were at Gisborne South last week to inspect works at the intersection of Couangalt and Benson roads.

New street lighting, trac islands and asphalt are being installed at the notorious blackspot.

Other projects in the Gisborne area include footpath improvements along Scenic Court and road reconstruction on Brady and McGregor roads.

New sections of footpath are being built on Wedge Street at Kyneton. Roadworks will also be completed on the Kyneton-Springhill and Redesdale roads.

Sandy Creek Road at Riddells Creek will be widened, while road, drainage and footpath upgrades are scheduled for Templeton Street at Woodend. Footpaths will also be built or improved at Lanceeld, Romsey, Macedon and New Gisborne.

    Roads put rates to work

    By Matt Crossman

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents are more likely to take part in maternal child and health visits than most other Victorians, but they oen face lengthy waits for planning applications, a new report card of councils reveals.

Created in an eort to help ensure transparent and accountable local government for communities, the state governments Know Your Council website shows that Macedon Ranges council is generally proactive with animal management, with 62 per cent of lost pets reclaimed compared to the state average of 54 per cent.

e cost of the councils animal management service ($43.33 per registered pet) was lower than the state average.

Macedon Ranges council fared well in terms of governance, roads and nancial performance.

But the time taken to decide planning applications was 91 days, much longer than the state average (65) and the time taken by similar councils (59).

Council chief executive Peter Johnston said this showed that working through planning issues in the municipality was a complex task.

Our planning results are reective of our deliberate approach to work with applicants and negotiate outcomes during the application process, he said. We will continue to work closely with

applicants, but at the same time we will focus on streamlining these application processes to improve the turnaround time.

Planning applications in Hume took an average of 97.4 days to be determined, compared with the similar-council average of 82.

Hume council chief executive Domenic Isola said having survey measures was good to a point, but results could merely reect a dierence in focus or priorities.

He said the needs of what the website termed similar councils could also be quite dierent. But he accepted that planning delays could be reduced.

Even without knowing exactly how other councils operate, I look at that base number and say we could be doing better, he said.

e website showed 11 per cent of Hume residents were considered active library users lower than the state average of 19 per cent.

Humes average cost per library visit ($6.87) was also higher, but Mr Isola said this could be attributed to the innovative range of resources oered by the councils global learning centres and its need to cater for a culturally diverse community.

How did you get involved with the club?I joined the Kyneton Aero Club in 2008 when I rst moved into the region and was able to source a hangar at Kyneton aireld. I joined the committee shortly aer joining the club and served in various positions from 2008 to 2015, recently standing down as president aer four years.

How did you get into ying? My father was in the air force and I was fortunate enough to grow up on a base and spent most of my early years in and around aircra Ive had a passion for aviation ever since.

What do you most love about it? e ying aspect is many things challenging, rewarding, relaxing. Its the ultimate freedom but also focuses the mind. Given the potential consequences, it requires 100 per cent concentration and commitment. e aircra themselves have stories to tell. My main interest is in historic and vintage aircra, particularly ex-military.

Do you travel by plane as a passenger very oen? How is that experience for you? I travel fairly regularly as an airline passenger I always get a window seat and spend most of the ight gazing out the window as I do when Im ying myself.

You own some planes yourself what are their stories? We are fortunate enough to be the current custodians of two historic ex-military aircra. Our rst aircra, a CT4 Airtrainer, served

MY PLACEFormer Kyneton Aero Club president Matt Henderson talks about his love of ying and the Macedon Ranges with Matt Crossman.

with the Royal Australian Air Force between 1975 and 1993. Our second aircra is a Cessna O-1G Birddog, which was built in 1952 as an L-19 liaison and observation aircra and served initially with the US Army Air Corps in Vietnam from 1966 to 1971, when it was transferred to the South Vietnamese Army. Following the end of the Vietnam War, it was eectively discarded on the side of an aireld and remained there until 1989 when it was recovered by well-known warbird restorer Col Pay. A friend of ours purchased the aircra and spent 17 years restoring it. We were fortunate enough to purchase it earlier this year.

Whats your day job? I work in the IT industry for a global technology manufacturer in aer-sales account management its somewhat removed from aviation but technology is also an area of interest since school days.

How does Kyneton aireld compare to others? Im likely to have a biased view here, but I also spend a lot of time at many other regional airelds around the country. I think the Kyneton aireld is a fantastic asset for both Kyneton and the Macedon Ranges.

Having spent a lot of time in the air, what are your favourite parts of the Macedon Ranges?e diversity of scenery in the region is one of the great aspects, from the pasture lands to the north, to the forests, ranges and reservoirs to the south. e most special ight weve done recently is the dawn formation ight above Mount Macedon on Anzac Day. Forums to tackle climate changeAn initiative to tackle global warming at a local level was announced at a peoples climate rally in Kyneton on November 29. Macedon Ranges Green Energy Coalition co-ordinator Rob Bakes said ve forums would be held in the municipality next year. The forums, starting in Riddells Creek in March, would promote discussion about deliberative democracy to encourage local, state and federal governments to address climate change.

Mobile improvements on trackV/Line commuters have welcomed an $18 million project to eliminate mobile black spots on country trains. The opposition last week accused the state government of betraying regional areas by pulling plans for the introduction of wi-, but Small Business Minister Philip Dalidakis said improving mobile connectivity would increase productivity for regional commuters.

Summer is almost here, and residents across the west are being cautioned to slip, slop, slap, slide and seek as the weather heats up.

A new SunSmart campaign is warning that adults are more likely to get sunburned doing day-to-day activities than on a day at the beach.

Data from the 2013-14 National Sun Survey shows that 50 per cent of adults were sunburnt during summer weekends from doing activities around the home, including gardening, chores, reading or having a barbecue.

Only 29 per cent of adults got sunburnt hanging out at the beach or pool, and 21 per cent got sunburnt playing sport.

Figures from the Victorian Cancer Registry reveal 963 people across the western

Cancer Council Victoria chief executive Todd Harper said the data showed people were getting more sun exposure than rst thought.

Incidental UV exposure is catching people out, Mr Harper said.

It may not occur to people that sun protection is just as important whether you are in the backyard, lying in the park or hanging out at the beach.

Riddells Creek has become a foodie destination, with Riddells Creek Hotel a star on the dining scene. Its run by sisters Carolyn Trodd and Dianne ODonnell, who have been around hospitality for the past 20 years. They love running the hotel.

We love seeing our regulars, who come in for their catch-ups, have a laugh, a drink and a chat, listen to music or watch the cricket, Dianne says. We love the fact that our hotel brings the community together, a place they can catch up with whats going on around town.

And, of course, we get plenty of visitors from out of town, who want good food in a traditional pub environment.

Right now, head chef Angelina Love is sorting out her new summer menu with help from sous chefs Bernard Smallwood, Brad Henderson and Dennis Cascio.

Were lucky to have access to the best fresh produce in the region, Angelina says, which means that our dishes play with seasonal availability. Using such quality ingredients brings out the best in each dish on a menu best described as traditional pub-grub with a modern twist.

The lightly grilled barramundi has a macadamia nut crust and is served with house-made tartare sauce, lemon wedges, thick-cut chips and a crisp garden salad always a favourite summertime go-to; as is the salt and chilli seafood duo fresh prawns and baby calamari tossed in salt-and-chilli seasoned our, lightly cooked until crispy and served with the same accompaniments.

Showing off an Asian inspiration, the tandoori chicken stack with potato rosti and salad topped with a dollop of garlic and cucumber yoghurt is a big avour hit, and theres a good selection of pasta and risottos, with a classic line-up of desserts to follow.

Monday and Tuesday nights are all about steak and parmas, and Thursdays has seafood as the headline act. Lunch, with vego and gluten-free options, is served Wednesday to Friday.

Not only does Riddells Creek Hotel have bus transport to Hanging Rock concerts and other regional events, it invites diners to go to its Facebook page and join an SMS texting service to keep up with whats on.

Its been featured in Belle magazine, among others, so you know this architect-designed Belle magazine, among others, so you know this architect-designed Belleresidence comes with cachet and serious design cred. On about 0.81 hectares of the tightly held northern slopes of Mount Macedon, the house sits amid a magnicent old chestnut grove, with beautiful gardens, an orchard, herb and vegie gardens and a chook run. There is an entry foyer, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a living room downstairs, while up top, there are three bedrooms, the main with a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with freestanding tub. Elements such as deep box bay windows, banquette seating, high ceilings (cathedral in upstairs family room), oorboards, customised cabinetry, double glazing, hydronic heating, clever storage and a mud room elevate this to sensational. The kitchen has Caesarstone benches and the adjoining family room gives access to one of several decks. All within minutes of schools, train station and Braemar College.

In a tightly held spot, around the corner from Spavin Lake, this architect-designed abode on about 920 square metres has big family written all over it. Five large bedrooms (plus a study) include three that share a smart bathroom. Another has an en suite, while the huge main has a walk-in wardrobe and a fully tiled en suite with twin basins. Living areas include a big, carpeted lounge room, a dining zone (oorboards) and a family room (angled ceiling, oorboards underfoot), which opens to a covered entertainment area with a mains gas-connected barbecue. Outdoor lighting and established gardens beautify the area, and theres a timber cubbyhouse. The appealing kitchen has a timber-topped island bench, an opaque glass-fronted pantry, mid-blue splashback tiles, stainless-steel underbench oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. Other drawcards are two split-systems, evaporative cooling, ducted heating, under-house storage, 9000-litre water tank and a 6.1x4.1-metre shed.

Among other high-calibre dwellings and perched above town to take in wide vistas, this house on about 3381 square metres presents a contemporary architectural facade matched inside with a cleverly congured oor plan. A large living room with polished oorboards and replace links with a huge family-meals space with concrete-look vinyl ooring and multiple picture windows. Each area has access to a large, elevated, partially covered deck with garden views. The kitchen has stone benchtops and European stainless-steel appliances. The main bedroom has walk-in and built-in wardrobes and a sleek en suite. Two other bedrooms share a luxe bathroom with oating vanity unit, a spa and walk-in shower. Theres also a study. Built by Mt Gisborne Homes, this wonderful homestead on about 0.46 hectares is an elegant, light-lled place, bearing period signatures such as rosettes on 2.7-metre ceilings, stepped cornices and skirts, fretwork and a leadlight front door. Polished oorboards delineate the sprawling living zones of family-meals (with gas log re in period surround) and separate rumpus, while the lounge room is carpeted. The kitchen is big and glam, with black granite benchtops, stacks of storage, corner pantry, wall oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. Of the four bedrooms (and a study), the main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite, while the main bathroom has a clawfoot tub. Should the rst mention be of the fab panoramic views, from a deep return balcony, of the sun setting on the hills? Does the extraordinary shed, hiding surprise after surprise, deserve top billing? The answer is both, but the big house on its block of about half a hectare is also a winner.

The property is just outside Melton, yet hidden away down an easily navigable dirt road and sits amid a gumtree grove milieu with little undergrowth. The house precinct has minimal gardens to maintain, leaving time to enjoy life and plan how a massive under-house area (with numerous rooms)

could be best used. Wine storage would make a ne starting point.

Timber stairs head up to the double-door entry, beyond which is a wide, tiled hallway with a big smoky mirror lling a ledged recess. The main bedroom and another are on either side, the main with wonderful views, a tted walk-in wardrobe and a large en suite with dual basins.

Three more bedrooms are off the living hub and accessed via multi-paned glass doors, as are the large main bathroom with dual basins and a spa, and the laundry with adjoining storage room rimmed with cupboard storage.

The huge living hub, with access to a balcony with automatic blinds, incorporates a tiled meals zone, kitchen and a family sitting area with inset carpet and a gas log re. Large and sleek with sandstone-toned vinyl-wrap cabinetry, the kitchen has a walk-in pantry, return island bench and an Emilia 900-millimetre cooker.

Heading down external timber stairs will take you to the 18x18-metre shed, although that moniker belies what lies within. Theres a workshop with benches galore, then comes a huge man cave/party room with a sleek, fully tiled powder room. Head up open-tread timber stairs from

here and a big gym under a pitched ceiling comes into view. A door opens from there to a mezzanine balcony looking down to the workshop. Oh, and the party room opens to a pergola or space for three cars.

Although a ne and functional asset as is, this cleverly congured shed has enormous scope for further usability, while the expansive gravelled surrounds provides capacity for big vehicles.

Ducted evaporative cooling, split-system, tank and town water, and cover for seven cars are included.
