A Sunbury gymnast who’s been honing her skills since the age of three is launching herself on to the national stage. Matilda Gavaghan, 14, is representing Victoria at the Australian Gymnastics Championships, which started at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena on Monday. The Salesian College student, who began competing in gymnastics as a �ve-year-old, will contest the women’s artistic section. Tilly has been training up to 19 hours a week. “I just love it,” she says. After the titles, Tilly will attend an Australian Institute of Sport camp before joining fellow Sunbury gymnast Ava Salopayevs at the Waikiki Gym Fest in Hawaii next January. Matt Crossman

Gymnast vaults into limelight

Water customers in Riddells Creek, Sunbury and Diggers Rest have been switched to the Melbourne supply system as below-average rainfall continues to place pressure on farmers and reserves.

With the area’s main supply, Rosslynne reservoir, near Gisborne, down to just 16 per cent capacity, Western Water said it was likely that supply to Gisborne, Macedon and Mount Macedon would also be switched in the next few months.

Customer and community relations general manager Graham Holt said the summer of 2015-16 had been Victoria’s third-hottest on record.

“Autumn has also been warmer than average so far,’’ he said.

�e switch is expected to allow Western Water to continue to meet demand by making the most of its existing supplies.

Mr Holt said customers might notice a change in the taste or texture of their drinking water as a result of the change.

‘‘It’s normal to notice a change in taste or hardness … water from di�erent sources varies,’’ he said.

Western Water could also send some Melbourne drinking water to towns such as Woodend, Lance�eld and Romsey.

Bureau of Meteorology �gures show that just 117.2 millimetres of rain fell in Gisborne between January and the end of April – well below the long-term average for those months of 211.8 millimetres.

While rainfall has been more frequent in recent weeks, Angelo Seelan, of Clarke�eld’s Fenton Hill

Organic Farm, said it had come a�er an extremely dry summer and autumn. He said the operations of the family farm, which produces strawberries and garlic available at independent organic stores around Melbourne, were being held back by the lack of rain.

‘‘It’s a bit of a gamble because a lot of the planting occurs now,’’ Mr Seelan said.

‘‘We’ve planted our garlic and it’s coming up well, but we’re now about to plant strawberries and just hoping that we get the rainfall.’’

Mr Seelan said only about one hectare of the 20-hectare farm had been planted.

‘‘We’re being very careful not to expose ourselves too much because the rain is so uncertain,’’ he said.

‘‘Last winter was just terrible. We’re relying on tank water … the dam is slowly coming back, but we need a lot more rain.”

Macedon Ranges council economic development and tourism manager Kylie Lethbridge said that while water was high on the agenda at recent meetings of the shire’s agribusiness forum, the council had yet to request drought status.

Commuters, traders and employees will be encouraged to sign a new petition calling on the state government to act on a parking crisis that’s crippling central Sunbury.

With spaces around Sunbury train station all taken by 7am on most days, commuter Leanne Morgan said the situation could not be allowed to continue.

‘‘It a�ects everybody,” she said. “Businesses, workers, shoppers … a lot of people are going to Watergardens because they know they can’t get a park in Sunbury.

‘‘I’ve spoken to large numbers of commuters who all say they would be happy to pay provided they could park at the station.’’

A public meeting is likely to be organised as commuters look to ramp up pressure on the government.

As reported by Star Weekly, Hume council Star Weekly, Hume council Star Weeklyhas been asked to explain why plans for a multi-level carpark in Evans Street were scrapped.

With spaces increasingly di�cult to �nd, Cr Jack Medcra� has asked the council to prepare a report detailing how much a nearby grassland reserve, purchased by the former Shire of Bulla, was worth and how it came to be granted environmental protection.

Plans for a private multi-level carpark outside Harris Scarfe were abandoned in 2010 despite extensive talks between the private owner, council and Public Transport Victoria.

�e town’s parking woes have increased since a crackdown on overstayers at short-term bays

at Sunbury Central shopping centre began late last month, with many train passengers resorting to leaving their cars in nearby side streets.

Visiting Sunbury last week, state deputy opposition leader David Hodgett said the area’s ongoing population growth meant a long-term solution was required.

‘‘More of the same is not an option,’’ he said. ‘‘You can’t just add 100 spaces because they will �ll up just as quickly and then you’re back to where you started.’’

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn accused Sunbury MP Josh Bull of being ‘‘too quiet’’ about the town’s problems, such as carparking.

‘‘A growing community such as this one needs an MP who will go in and �ght hard for them,’’ he said.

Mr Bull said he would continue to raise Sunbury’s parking issues with Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan.

‘‘For four years, the former Liberal government did nothing on this matter,’’ he said.

‘‘�e Andrews Labor government recently announced a $20 million investment to deliver more than 1500 carparking spaces across Melbourne.”

Woodend diesel spill dangerA 500-metre diesel spill caused traf�c chaos along Urquhart, Bowen and Brooke streets in Woodend last Thursday. Woodend CFA volunteers were called after several cars spun on the diesel about 3pm. Spokesman Mike Dornau said rainy conditions made the situation worse. ‘‘The motorist who called it in actually put her car across the road to make sure no one else drove through it, because it was very dangerous,’’ he said. Muscle cars from the Australian auto industry’s heyday of 1963-77 were among those that lined up in Kyneton last Wednesday as part of a statewide rally raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Sunbury car enthusiast and cancer survivor Steve Sawyer had intended to take part, but was forced to withdraw due to mechanical problems with the 1967 Ford Mustang he’d lined up for the seven-day event.

He went along for the ride anyway, helping raise money for a centre that will provide a home away from home for regional families a�ected by blood cancer.

‘‘It’s been great to still be a part of it,’’ Mr Sawyer said. ‘‘�e car had some issues, which, being old cars, they o�en do.

‘‘But it will all be ironed out in time for next year.’’

Premier Daniel Andrews has hinted at ‘‘exciting announcements’’ about the former Victoria University site at Jacksons Hill, raising hopes that the historic property will not be lost to community use.

Visiting Sunbury last Wednesday, Mr Andrews said the state government remained steadfast in its belief that the site should be used for educational purposes.

‘‘�ere’s a few issues we need to work through,’’ he said. ‘‘But we hope to have some exciting announcements to make in the future.

‘‘We should always be looking for more educational provision, particularly in an area like Sunbury that’s pretty unique.

‘‘It’s got that country feel about it, but it’s on the edge of Melbourne. �at’s great, but it also means there’s some more challenges.’’

Residential development has been among possibilities �oated for the site, which was handed over to VU in the 1990s.

It has been largely dormant since the university closed its Sunbury campus in 2009, with parts becoming a target for vandals.

Sunbury Residents Association (SRA) has long sought promises that the site, which was the historic home of Sunbury’s 19th century asylum, will not be carved up for housing.

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn has also warned the government against changing planning permits or zones.

�e Sunbury Asylum Alliance, which hopes to turn the site into a thriving community hub with space for jobs training, youth programs

and artists, has also urged the government to prevent the land being sold o�. Parts of the site, being used by community groups including radio station 3NRG and the Boilerhouse �eatre Company, have been earmarked by Hume council for an arts and cultural precinct.

In a letter to the SRA, council chief executive Domenic Isola said the future of the remainder of the site lay with VU.

‘‘Council understands that VU considers the site surplus to needs and has initiated a planning scheme amendment seeking to rezone the site to facilitate the sale,’’ Mr Isola said.

Council city infrastructure director Kelvin Walsh told Star Weekly that VU ‘‘should Star Weekly that VU ‘‘should Star Weeklyconsider ways that the area could continue to support our community in the years ahead’’.

‘‘At the same time, Hume is keen for the government to lead a working group which can help identify how the site may be used in the future,’’ Mr Walsh said.

‘‘We would like to work closely with the government so that options can be developed to ensure that the site contributes positively to Sunbury.’’

VU has previously said the university was working with the council to determine a use for the site to ‘‘enable a tertiary presence to be retained in Sunbury’’.

Sunbury’s Kismet Park Primary School will be given the facilities needed to ensure its pupils get the best possible start in life, Premier Daniel Andrews said a�er meeting with students and sta� last Wednesday.

Mr Andrews met many of the school’s 450 pupils during last week’s lengthy visit, which followed the announcement of a $700,000 upgrade in last month’s state budget. �e tour included demonstrations of the school’s innovative reading and money skills programs.

‘‘�is is a fantastic school with a great culture,’’ Mr Andrews said. ‘‘We want to make sure they’ve got the buildings to match.’’

Mr Andrews warned the current federal government’s decision not to ful�ll Gonski

education funding would leave the state to do more heavy li�ing.

‘‘�is school will lose $300,000 each and every year until Malcolm Turnbull delivers on the Gonski obligation or until Australia gets a Labor government,’’ he said.

Kismet Park principal Glenn McConnell said the school would spend the next �ve weeks working on plans to improve learning areas and address maintenance issues identi�ed in a 2012 audit.

Facilities catering for performing arts and the spread of literacy programs will be a focus.

‘‘We’re very excited,’’ Mr McConnell said.

I am a mother of �ve children living in Macedon for the past 13 years.

I think this proposal is brilliant. All of my kids will bene�t from such a fantastic facility, be it through basketball, futsal, netball and inter-school sports competitions.

I love that their friends and the wider community will bene�t from the hub – it will cater for so many different sports.

Raising teenagers is such a scary prospect in this day and age. A multi-purpose facility in our shire to offer sport opportunities makes this project so important.

Imagine having a situation where kids weren’t turned away from sport because of limited court space to run competitions … it sounds like a win-win to me. I encourage everyone to get behind this much-needed proposal.

The road is far too narrow and too busy for only a single lane in each direction. Putting any type of barrier down the middle of the current road will only make it more dangerous. The only solution is to duplicate the current road and give us two lanes in each direction.

Gisborne’s busy town centre is set to undergo another major faceli�, with the state government lending its support to a $367,000 project aimed at improving accessibility and increasing trade.

Treasurer Tim Pallas was in Brantome Street on Tuesday to announce $200,000 in funding to help revitalise the commercial area, with works to include landscaping, street furniture, footpath and drainage improvements. It comes a year a�er the completion of a $400,000

‘‘We know Gisborne is growing,’’ he said. ‘‘We can’t lose the quintessential character of this community. It’s a quality I know many people have moved here to cherish and we have to preserve it.’’

Mr Pallas said modelling showed the project would pump more than $730,000 into Gisborne businesses, creating 12 jobs during construction and subsequently supporting two full-time jobs.

Mayor Graham Hackett said the project would enhance businesses, ‘‘ensuring they can prosper and grow’’.

Acknowledging that residents had ‘‘waited some time for this project’’, Mr Pallas said the upgrade would breathe life into a town that was becoming ‘‘very much a centrepiece’’ because of its proximity to Melbourne.

�e announcement comes weeks a�er Macedon Ranges council wrote to the government asking for help to deal with Gisborne’s population explosion.

Expressing fears that Gisborne was turning into ‘‘another Sunbury’’ with a lack of adequate infrastructure and services, Cr Russell Mowatt suggested expansion be halted until the government did more to address problems such as carparking, roads and bus connections.

Cr John Letchford said the latest funding injection was greatly needed.

‘‘We certainly welcome it with open arms.’’

Gisborne’s centre gets attention

Close to 80 Sunbury residents have enjoyed a lovely cuppa, helping Carole Simpson, Joan Hitch and Rob Coulson in the �ght against cancer.

�e trio helped organise St Andrew’s Uniting Church’s annual Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser, held a�er the morning service on May 15.

More than $550 was collected this year, taking the grand total raised by the church since 2010 to more than $5000.

�e annual event, and others like it, help the Cancer Council continue its research, prevention and support services.

Ms Simpson says a donation as little as $25 can help GPs and health professionals properly advise patients about cancer screening and diagnosis.

Meanwhile, residents are also being urged to support Sunbury’s annual Great Bake-O� Challenge at Rainbow Court hall from 9.30am this �ursday.

Organiser Fi Corboy is dedicating the ��h annual event to her mother Trudy, who at age 75 was recently diagnosed with stage 4 secondary cancer a�er having breast cancer nine years ago.

Federal election candidates for McEwen are being urged to commit to a national infrastructure fund to help ‘‘future proof’’ outer suburbs such as Sunbury as they deal with the pitfalls of rapid population growth.

�e National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA), which includes Hume council, says residents are sick of dealing with congested roads, poor public transport and inadequate access to health facilities.

NGAA chairman Glenn Docherty said a national dedicated infrastructure fund would address the infrastructure backlog in fast- growing outer suburbs and future proof them as they continued to grow.

‘‘�is would lead to a reduced cost of living, less stress and better quality of life,’’ he said.

More than 40,000 emails have been sent to current federal MPs as part of the alliance’s Fund Our Future campaign, with a recent report showing $5 billion would be needed every year over the next 15 years to meet the infrastructure needs of Australian growth areas.

Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou called on Labor MP Rob Mitchell and Liberal candidate Chris Jermyn to pledge support for a proposed global learning centre (GLC) in Macedon Street, Sunbury, on land recently bought by the council for $1.8 million.

She said the major project would be hard to deliver without federal funding.

‘‘�e Hume global learning centre … will help people of all ages learn and develop great skills,’’ Cr Patsikatheodorou said.

�e centre will include a state-of-the-art library, high-tech resources and function areas for seminars and community organisations.

Infrastructure poll plea

Mr Mitchell said there had not been enough investment into the electorate’s growing communities.

“Labor supports the objective of the Fund Our Future campaign, which is to deliver better infrastructure and services to fast-growing communities,” he said. “�is is exactly why Labor has made infrastructure, health and education priorities this election.”

Mr Mitchell said the proposed GLC was ‘‘an incredibly important project’’ for Sunbury.

‘‘We’ve already seen how the GLCs in Broadmeadows and Craigieburn have

transformed local learning,’’ he said. “We will continue to work with the states, local councils and the National Growth Area Alliance.”

Mr Jermyn said the federal government was already making a signi�cant investment in “our growing community”.

‘‘A debate about the infrastructure McEwen requires needs action, not just talk, and the Turnbull government is already delivering,” he said.

“I’ve met with the mayor and representatives from Hume council to discuss priorities across Sunbury and Craigieburn.”

�e door to an inclusive education is being opened to students who are deaf or losing their hearing, thanks to a new partnership at Salesian College in Sunbury.

�e college will be the ��h campus of St Mary’s College for Hearing Impaired Students, with seven students bene�ting from an integrated learning experience since the schools came to an agreement in time for the start of the current school year.

St Mary’s principal Amanda Purcell said feedback about the initiative had been “absolutely fantastic”.

‘‘It’s terri�c to have local students who previously attended schools with a bit of an ad-hoc approach to deafness issues being included into Salesian’s teaching and programs,’’ she said.

Ms Purcell said the students were spending some of their time following a specialised program that catered for their deafness or hearing loss.

‘‘But we are trying to get them to spend as much time as possible in the regular Salesian classes,’’ she said.

‘‘We want them to feel they are being given the chance to have a really inclusive education.’’

Salesian principal Mark Brockhus said the students had adapted well.

Work to improve the acoustics of classrooms and the rollout of equipment, such as sound systems, is helping the transition.

‘‘We’re also �nding it’s the kind of thing that is helpful to other students,’’ Mr Brockhus said.

�e Salesian-St Marys initiative will be blessed by Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart during an opening ceremony on June 9.

All ears to students’ needs

People interested in the o�en vexed issue of Australia’s handling of asylum seekers are being invited to attend a forum in New Gisborne this Sunday.

Federal election candidates for the seat of McEwen will take part in a Q&A as part of the free event at Gisborne Church of Christ.

Minister and compere Paul Crothers said the forum, organised in the wake of a church member’s concerns about the tone and level of public debate, would look to ‘‘unwrap’’ the complex problem.

‘‘So o�en, it is very hard to make a decision based on the small sound bites we read and hear in the media,’’ he said.

‘‘We will be looking to explore the policies of the major parties in more detail.’’

Although we might view our cars as ‘transport angels’, independence and convenience being the blessings, it becomes a problem when other cars’ headlights look like they have halos.

This ‘vision’ isn’t a heavenly visitation, but rather indicates you may have a not uncommon problem for older people – cataracts. You know, those eye critters we heard about when younger, but didn’t expect to experience ourselves.

A visit to an optometrist for a regular eye check becomes more and more important as we age, especially when you think about being in charge of a car, which requires excellent vision to keep yourself and other drivers safe.

Other cataract signs are headlights looking fuzzy, street signs becoming indistinct when facing oncoming traf�c, and glare’s a bother.

If the idea of having cataracts removed gives you the heebie-jeebies, don’t worry because today’s technology makes it straightforward – and, unlike cataract surgery, the alternative of driving with impaired vision could be fatal.

Macular degeneration is another eye issue that can rear its head as we grow older.

If you notice that driving from a brightly lit area into your shopping centre’s underground car-park is hard for your eyes to adjust to, or your central vision gets blurry, making road lines look crooked or warped, it may indicate this progres-sive eye disease.

When it’s hard to spot pedestrians starting to cross the road, or cars overtaking on the side, it may mean glaucoma, which impairs side vision.

If you �nd yourself wondering “Where did that pedestrian dressed in bright orange and purple polka dots spring from?” it’s time to book in for an eye test, pronto.

Sometimes it’s just plain old tiredness affecting driving vision; other times it might be a diabetic response to low blood sugar levels, or even a sign of a minor stroke.

It seems unfair that our eyes don’t age like a good wine – which is why we need to keep an eye on our eyes, so we have only good eyes on the road … for everyone’s sake.

Last column I spoke about was “Ethics” and wecertainly could do with some right now in the Worldof Politics. As the owner of a small business, thisbudget has done nothing whatsoever to help or toencourage me to expand. Many of the people wehave the privilege to call clients have been seriouslydisadvantaged by a budget that panders to thewealthy and ignores the needs of the “average”income earner (most of the population). We will, overthe next few weeks, be bombarded by slogans, TV adsand newspaper spreads all telling us how wonderfulone side of politics is and how dreadful the other sideis and how it is always someone else’s fault.

As the election approaches I would just like to ask allPoliticians to do a few things -

1) Stop bickering and start governing

2) Listen to the community - the WHOLE

community

3) Answer questions with honesty, ethics and

without “game playing”.

Kyneton’s Ainslie Kemp didn’t think she was in the picture to make her debut for Melbourne Football Club’s women’s side in an AFL exhibition match on Sunday.

At just 19 and in her �rst full season of open-age women’s football with the VU Spurs, she’s been happy just to play against the likes of top women players Daisy Pearce and Katie Brennan in their VFL competition.

“I didn’t think I was at that [AFL] level to play for Melbourne,” Kemp said last week.

“I’m still learning … the skill and intensity are so much greater.”

Selectors thought otherwise and Kemp lined up alongside Pearce in the Demons’ side which took on Brisbane Lions at the MCG.

It was a 71-point win for the Demons, with Kemp among the goalkickers.

Kemp said she “lost it” when she received the phone call from Demons coach Michelle Cowan telling her she was in the side.

“I didn’t really know [I was in contention],” she said. “I played in the under-22 match between Vic country and Vic metro and didn’t hear anything a�er that.

“�en I got a phone call from Michelle Cowan and I missed it. I heard the voice call and I was so nervous to call her back.

“She said ‘congratulations you’ve been picked in the team’.”

Playing on the MCG was a long way from the football �eld in Trentham, where Kemp started playing football with boys.

“I played at Trentham until I was 13 and a half and then I was too old. I had no idea girls football was a thing,” she said.

“Kyneton formed a girl’s team and it was a perfect time to be part of it.

“�ere were seven of us originally and the �rst game we had no idea what was going on. �e next week we had 21 players.”

Kemp played with the Tigers until last year.When she got too old to play in the Bendigo

Youth Girls competition, Kemp had a big decision . . . where she would play next.

Several clubs wanted to speak to her but the decision came down to two teams, the Spurs and �under.

“It all depended on where I went for uni,” she said.

“I was going to play for the �under if I got into Latrobe [in Bendigo].

“If I got into uni at VU, I would play for the Spurs. My �rst preference was VU.”

Despite having to travel more than an hour to get to training and games, Kemp loves playing at the Spurs.

She has nothing but praise for the team, especially coach and women’s football legend Debbie Lee.

“She has had so much experience,” Kemp said. “You trust you are getting right information.

“She has been thinking about it and what she’s telling you she probably used as a player.”

Jets dig deep to overcome key on court absences�e Sunbury Jets are continuing to respond in winning ways no matter what is thrown at them in Big V women’s division 1 basketball.

�e Jets’ have started the season with 10 straight victories and continue to develop as a side, with di�erent players standing up each week.

On Sunday, they set the tone defensively against Hawthorn and that provided the basis for their 67-34 win at Boardman Stadium.

�ey restricted the Magic to less than single �gures in each of the �rst three quarters, producing 21 steals and 10 blocked shots.

Captain Chelsea Burns, who returned to the starting line-up a�er a hamstring injury, led

the way with six steals, three blocked shots and eight points. Courtney Duever top scored with 21 points. She also had 10 rebounds, two steals and three blocks.

�e win is the Jets’ third without coach Kennedy Kereama and centre Jess Bygate, who are both with the New Zealand national team.

Starter Naomi Stevens was also missing from Sunday’s win.

Acting senior coach Lisa Townsend said it had taken the side a little bit longer than expected to adjust to not having Kennedy at the helm.

“Last week was better than the week before,” she said. “Training was better and girls are getting used to everything and everyone is working out their roles.

“We’ve had a few injuries as well, which haven’t helped. We’ve been plugging away. Everyone wants to beat us.”

In a good sign for the Jets, on Sunday they had 13 points from players coming o� the bench – a vast improvement from a combined six points in the previous two games against Keilor and second-placed Geelong Supercats.

Townsend said she thought the bench improvement was part of adjusting to not having Kennedy.

�e Jets’ tough run continues with matches against Mildura, Camberwell and Latrobe City in coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the Jets’ men’s side fell short in overtime against Casey Cavaliers on Sunday a�ernoon.

Celebrating Nathan Sellwood’s 350th senior game, the Jets came from behind at three-quarter time to level the scores at 73-73.

In overtime, the two sides went goal for goal before the Cavaliers secured an 83-82 victory.

Riddell District Netball League was le� to rue a disappointing �rst three quarters against Alberton Netball League on Saturday.

�e RDNL travelled to Inverloch for the interleague clash but didn’t �re a shot until the game was all but over.

Alberton jumped out of the blocks and led at every break. And although the RDNL controlled the fourth quarter, Alberton won 45-35.

RDNL coach Jarrad Walker said it just didn’t happen for his side on the day.

“It was one of those days that everything that was 50-50 fell their way,” he said.

“�e ball would bounce o� the post and into the court for them and o� the post and out for us. It was one of those days.

“We had to try to stem the �ow of the game and it didn’t happen until the last quarter.”

�e RDNL team was slow out of the blocks and struggled to click as a team while Alberton was at its best early on.

“Alberton, to their credit, were consistent almost to the end of the game,” Walker said.

“�ey just played consistent, error-free netball. We were probably too �owing.

“�e �rst quarter killed us and took the wind out of us.”

RDNL made changes at the defensive end which created more turnovers, but wasn’t able to convert at the other end of the court until late in the game.

“We didn’t �re until the last quarter when it was about 16-4 our way,” Walker said.

“�e game was gone for us by the time we found our rhythm and we relaxed a bit more.

“We will take heart from the last quarter.”

Walker said Sara Febbo was best on court for the RDNL, while he was impressed with how Ellen Close performed coming onto the court in the second half.

Close was a late inclusion to the side, a�er fellow shooter Hope Evans withdrew from the team because of injury.

“�at’s the best I’ve seen Sara play,” Walker said. “She’s come on leaps and bounds this season.”

Meanwhile, the RDNL under-17 side lost 27-21 against Alberton.

Thunder steals a welcome win after string of lossesEast Sunbury came from behind against Keilor Park to return to the winners’ list in Essendon District Football League division 2.

A�er �ve successive losses, the �under had to do it the hard way at Goonawarra Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

Goalless in the �rst quarter, the �under then trailed at every break, being 10 points in arrears at the �nal change. �en four goals to two was enough for the �under to squeeze home, 12.7 (79) - 11.10 (76).

Lucas Shaw and Tom Galea kicked four goals apiece for the �under, while Jason King booted two. Caine Scho�eld-Lane and Shaw were named its best players.

Speaking before the match, �under coach Steve Grey said the start to the season had been a tough one.

“We are hurting,” he said.“We should have beaten Jacana and should

have also won against Coburg Districts. Against

Jacana we were 16 points up at three-quarter time; against Districts it was 10 points up with four or �ve minutes to go.

“We could have been 3-3, but now we’ve got a fair bit of work to do.”

Grey said one of the biggest issues early in the season was the speed of mental processing during games, something, he said, would come with time.

“We haven’t been up to speed thinking-wise. We’re too slow to react to momentum; we’re not taking �rst options and too slow with the ball.

“We’re only in our fourth year of football and I think we’re still another two years away from being where we need to be.”

Grey said that with a 2-5 record, achieving consecutive wins in the next few weeks was vital.

“We could have been 3-3, which wouldn’t have been a bad position,” he said. “Now we’ve

got matches against three sides in our region on the ladder and I can’t see why we can’t win them all. We need to win against a quality side.”

While the seniors haven’t got the results the coach wanted, the �under’s reserves and under-18s are both in the top four.

“So we have plenty of growth,” Grey said. “�e seconds are third and the under-18.5s are on top and undefeated.

“We had three under-18.5 players go through the team last week and probably another three or four on Saturday. It’s good for the future of the club.”

�is week, the �under faces bottom side Burnside Heights.

�e Riddell District Football League was unable to see o� a fast-�nishing Alberton in the community football interleague championships on Saturday.

A�er holding a two-point lead at three-quarter time, RDFL succumbed 14.13 (97) - 13.7 (85).

It was the host Alberton that made the better start at Inverloch Recreation Reserve.

Alberton booted six �rst-term goals to take a 14-point lead into the opening break.

But the longer the match went, the more the RDFL side looked at home.

Jonathon Kent was causing all sorts of trouble up forward for Riddell, while around the ground Brandon Kilty and Brent Swallow were proving a handful for Alberton.

RDFL quickly reeled in the margin and took a two-point advantage into the main break.

RDFL coach Matt Power said his side turned things around by winning the clearances.

“�at’s what it was more than anything,” he said. “�e boys were working really hard, bu we just couldn’t get that extra break.

“We had some chances to go out to nine or 15 points up and we didn’t take them. Alberton was always thereabouts.”

�e sides traded shots on goal in the third term and it appeared the match was heading for a nail-biting �nish.

When the whips were cracking, though, it was the hosts that were able to come up trumps. Alberton put the clamps on the RDFL, conceding just two goals across the �nal 30 minutes.

�ere were no such scoring troubles at the other end of the ground, with Alberton booting 4.4 in the �nal term to seal the two-goal win.

Kent worked hard on the RDFL forward line to �nish with �ve goals.

He received good support from Haydn Ross, who kicked three of his own.

Also impressive for the RDFL were Matthew Burkett, Timothy Walsh and Kilty.

�e result had Alberton jumping to 26th place in the AFL Victoria community championship rankings.

�e RDFL slips to 29th and has a date with the Warrnambool Football League next year.

A goal in the dying minutes to Western Region forward Andrew Panayi handed the Ballarat Football League an agonising three-point loss in the community football interleague championships on Saturday.

In one of the closest matches of the championships, the WRFL came out on top, 13.17 (95) - 13.14 (92), at Footscray’s Whitten Oval in.

Although the match �nished as a classic, it appeared likely to be a blowout early in the second term.

�e WRFL skipped away to a 34-point lead on the back of four unanswered goals.

Late goal seals thrillerDaniel Tung and Jarryd Graham got in on the act, the BFL kicking six of the last seven goals in the half to trail by just two points at the main break.

�e momentum continued to swing when play resumed.

It was the WRFL that drew �rst blood, kicking back-to-back goals to open up a 16-point advantage.

But as they had done previously, the BFL players rallied with four unanswered goals to take the lead early in the �nal term.

WRFL forward Daniel Castellano had been a headache for the Ballarat backline all day and he continued the punishment, the Sunshine spearhead booting two crucial goals, giving him four for the match and taking his team to a 10-point lead at midpoint of the last quarter.

before Matthew Notman put the BFL in front with just minutes remaining.

�en Panayi ensured the WRFL would have the last laugh, the talented Werribee Districts forward kicking the match-winning goal.

Despite the loss, Nicholas Hind was a clear standout for the BFL and, with teammates Benjamin Sortino and Lane Buckwell, was named among the best players.

For the WRFL, Matthew Dean and Murray Boyd were adjudged key players on the day.

On the back of the win, the WRFL moves to sixth in the AFL Victoria community championship rankings.

It will take on the Northern Football League in 2017.

�e BFL drops to ninth and has a date with Bendigo next year.
