Creates interdependence: countries relying on each other for goods, resources, knowledge, & labor

Led to the creation of international organizations & treaties to connect people

CULTURAL & INTELLECTUAL CHANGES:

Changes have occurred throughout the world that deal with 3 different areas:

1. Satellites

2. Television

3. Computers

SATELLITES: By 2000, artificial satellites had changed global communication

Used for 3 reasons:

1. communications (television, telephone)

2. observation (provides data, weather forecasts, military planners)

3. navigation (give precise locations to ship captains)

TELEVISION: Allowed people all over the world to tune in and connect with other people

Brought news that was happening at that moment into peoples’ living rooms and allowed them to view things first hand

Provided opportunities for people to see political leaders for the first time Showed poverty, starvation, & death Provided entertainment

COMPUTERS: Completely changed the world

Introduced the “Information Age”

Run businesses & power plants, help with research, allow for global communications

1970’s: creation of the Internet

By 2010, 1/3 of world’s population had access to the Internet

Helped shape life in developing nations by connecting them to a world of new ideas & info

Global & political connections allows for countries to come together to solve international problems that face the world

Oil provides global importance Largest oil suppliers: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq Goal: to end the power of western oil companies & determine oil production prices

Middle Eastern OPEC members used oil as a weapon, which resulted in a recession

Created in 1995 Goals: set up global rules to ensure that trade followed slowly and freely Opposes tariffs (taxes) that protect a country’s home against international competition
