THE MEANING OF THE LORD’S ASCENSION
On this celebration of the Lord’s Ascension, Jesus calls us to continue his work - that has been vindicated and perfected in the Father’s raising him from the dead. We who have seen and heard the story of Jesus are now called to bring that hope into the lives of others and into the life we share as families, as the Church, as the human
community. In every kindness we offer, in every word of encouragement and comfort we utter, in every moment we spend listening and supporting, we proclaim the Gospel of the Risen Jesus; every good work - however small or hidden - is a sign of Christ in our midst.
TODAY’S READING First Reading — Jesus tells the disciples that they will be witnesses to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:1-11) Psalm — God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord. (Psalm 47) Second Reading — God seated Jesus at his right hand in the heavens. (Ephesians 1:17-23) or Ephesians 4:1-13 [1-7, 11-13] Gospel — The Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven.

LOOK TO THIS DAY Look therefore, to this day! For it is life, the very life,
in its brief course, lie all the verities and realities
of your existence: the bliss of growth, the glory of action,
the splendor of achievement.
For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision,
but today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness,
and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well,
therefore to this day! Such is the salvation to the dawn.

The son replied, “I do know!” “Okay,” said his father. “What does the Bible mean?” “That’s easy, Daddy…” the young boy replied excitedly, “It stands for ‘Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.’”

CELEBRATING MY 50 YEARS OF PRIESTHOOD
For me, it seems a dream. A dream that today I see realized. Fifty years ago, on June 24th, 1962, I was ordained a priest in Madrid. I remember that morning, filled with sunshine and joy, full of plans and illusions. I felt the call of God, and a decision made on my part, giving Him a generous and positive response. I
encountered Jesus once again more intimately, and felt that He was looking into my eyes. Smiling He said my name, and I, without even thinking much about it, was searching for other seas, new lands and cultures. This, of course, involved leaving behind my family, friends, my own culture and homeland, Spain, where I was born and grew up.
My first two years as a priest (1962-1964) were spent in a huge parish in the south of Madrid. That beautiful church is today the cathedral of the new Diocese of Getafe. After my decision to respond to the plea of the Bishop of Miami, I came to this diocese where I have spent 48 years of my priesthood. Of these, almost 20 have been here in St. Agnes Parish in Key Biscayne.
Fifty years ago, there were many priests in Spain and few in Latin America. I offered to work as a missionary in whatever country of Latin America where needed. When I was sent to Miami, I did not understand. It was the rector of the seminary in Madrid who tried to clarify the situation for me. I always remember his prophetic words: "Do you want to work in Latin America? Don't worry, since there in Miami you will find thousands of Latin-Americans, who need you as much as the same Anglo-Saxons." How much vision that man had, as I think back on all that has happened in the 50 years since then.!
The major part of my life has been spent in the Archdiocese of Miami. I have worked with the poor and the rich, with Anglo-Saxons and Latin-Americans. I have dedicated time to the formation of permanent deacons and future priests. For many years I have transmitted the message of the Gospel by radio and by the written word. I have directed apostolic movements such as Cursillos of Christianity for more than 10 years. I have been a pastor for 33 years in various parishes, in which I have had to build churches, schools and other facilities, mainly taking pastoral care of these Christian Communities.
Thinking about all this and many other things, I give thanks to God for what has been achieved, and at the same time, I feel happy and grateful for the support and affection which people have always shown me. I ask that you remember me in your prayers. I invite you to the Mass of Thanksgiving which I will celebrate on Friday, June 1st at 7:00pm in St. Agnes Church. To all of you, I offer my gratitude, my love and my prayers for you.

The Ascension of the Lord
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved. — Mark 16:16
PastorPastor’’s Notess Notes
May 20, 2012
“The Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God.”
Today we celebrate the
Solemnity of the Lord’s Ascension. The Spirit of the Risen Christ walks among us, compelling us to take on the work of being His witnesses and proclaimers of His Gospel. The Ascension is an ending but it also a beginning; it marks an absence but also a presence.
While Jesus returns to the Father, He remains present to us in the Spirit of His love, His hope, His compassion.
As Jesus takes leave of the physical world, He calls us to take on the work of proclaiming His Gospel- but He promises to remain in our midst as a living presence as we struggle to understand and carry on the work of being His “witnesses”.
May our minds and hearts be open to the spirit of the living Christ in our midst, walking among us, inspiring us, speaking to us of the peace and justice of God.

He dedicado tiempo a formar diáconos permanentes y futuros sacerdotes.

9:00 A.M., 11:00 A.M. y 6:00 P.M. (English)
12:45 P.M. y 7:30 P.M.
