Parish News Advisory Councils

Meeting - All Parishes On Tuesday, September 1, 2015, Father Ed and Father Paul hosted the parish advisory coun-cils from our five regional parish-es for a presentation of the over-view of the proposal Bishop Zubik is requesting for all of us to con-sider for the five parishes becom-ing one. Father Samuel J. Espos-

ito, our Regional Vicar – convened the meeting, defining the objectives moving forward. Society is in constant change, we have fewer vocations to the priesthood, smaller families, fewer children and lower Mass participa-tion by Catholics. Father Esposito focused on the im-portant work for each Catholic parishioner to allow them to respond to their baptismal call to utilize their gifts and talents in greater ways to respond to what it means to be Church in our modern world and among the regional par-ishes of our area.

Mr. John Flaherty – Diocesan Secretary for Pastoral Life – then provided an extensive overview of our current five regional parishes which included: (1) the people (2) the life of the Church (3) the finances and (4) the availability of clergy. Data in all of these areas was thoroughly re-searched and presented. The data it

comprised from a variety of sources including Mission Insite – which works with Google, Experian and the U.S. Census Bureau. Additionally, the data comes from the Annual Report each parish is required to complete and send to the Diocese of Pittsburgh every year (which in-cludes: amount of Baptisms, Marriages, Funerals – en-rollment in faith formation programs including CCD reli-gious education, adult faith formation, RCIA, etc.) – in-cluded also are the monthly financial reports for the par-ishes and the ages of clergy. Father Esposito then spoke of the importance of all parishes in the Diocese of Pittsburgh to be actively en-gaged in the program of Evangelization. This call to evangelization comes from Jesus himself, rooted in the Gospels where we find Jesus going out to meet people where they are to bring them closer in relationship to God through the call to faith. Pope Francis so often reminds us that we have to go out to our people, especially those who may find them-selves inactive and even alienated from the faith. Active evangelization efforts need to arise in each Catholic as a call from Jesus himself to: “Go forth to all nations,” a call that each Catholic receives in Baptism. Bishop Zubik in his Pastoral Letter to all in the Diocese of Pittsburgh high-lights how important it is for each parish to have active evangelization efforts to help each other of be a friend of Jesus and to bring a friend to Jesus. Father Esposito then reminded the members of the advisory councils of the model of “Team Ministry,” in which the Bishop had appointed Father Yuhas as Moder-ator of the Team Ministry together with Father Paul Grunebach who shares in Team Ministry – each working

together collaboratively to serve the needs of all five par-ish communities. This is a pioneer-ing model which is being used and studied in our area as a potential mod-el for other areas in our Diocese. Father Esposito spoke clearly that everything cannot remain the same as it has been and that we are in transition among the parishes of our region as we need to respond to the call of what it means to be Church today in the midst of the challenges we face with all the data outlined and presented. John Flaherty then shared the information that Bishop Zubik has chartered a team which will be called: “The Southeast Washington County Collaborative Pastoral Planning Team.” The purpose of the Team will be three fold: (1) To evaluate the proposal of forming one parish among the five existing parishes in Southeast Washing-ton County (2) To suggest an alternative proposal that is sustainable and vibrant for the Church in this region giv-en the data of the results of the evaluation are such that one parish would not result in a sustainable and vibrant future for the Church. (3) To develop a transition plan, using the Diocesan Guidelines: “One Body, One Mis-sion,” in the categories of: Eucharist, Catechesis, For-mation, Evangelization and Stewardship, that would facil-itate the transformation from the current configuration of five parishes into a new configuration. The Team should have at least a first draft of its findings no later than the end of March 2016. These findings will need to be re-viewed by Bishop Zubik and his advisors as well as by the parish pastoral and finance councils and parishioners at large before it is finalized into a formal recommenda-tion. The Team will be comprised of the following: Father Esposito, Regional Vicar – who will serve as the Team Leader; Father Ed Yuhas, Priest Team Moderator, Father Paul Grunebach, Priest Team; ten parishioners, two from each of the five parishes selected from among the members of the pastoral and finance councils. Four members from each parish (2 pastoral and 2 fi-nance council members) will be nomi-nated by the team of priests. These 20 individuals will be interviewed by Father Esposito, Father Yuhas, Father Grunebach and Kathy Heino using a standard set of questions. Based on the results of the interviews, the team will be selected ensuring that the team is comprised of a balance of young/ old, male/female, pastoral/ finance council, tech-nical expertise (e.g., finance, planning, communications/ pastoral sensitivities. Kathy Heino has been invited by the Diocese to serve as Facilitator of the Team, with support from the Secretariat for Parish Life. The interview process for team members is anticipated to begin in late September 2015.

Religious Education & Faith Formation The New Catechetical Year We are excited to share with you some information regarding our Religious Education programs for the newly configured parishes of Southeast Washington County for the 2015-2016 school year. This cluster of parishes is com-prised of St.Agnes, Ave Maria, St. Joseph, St. Oliver Plunkett and St. Thomas Aquinas parishes located in Richeyville, Bentleyville, Roscoe, Fredericktown, Marianna and California. As you may already be aware, Bishop Zubik has asked that all five parishes come together to develop a “blueprint” for these Catholic faith communities, assessing the manner in which pastoral life will best be served, and to provide for the needs of all of the faithful in the area. The faith formation and religious education of our chil-dren and youth, and the care and provision for Family Life, is a most significant and important area of pastoral life, and one of our highest priorities. To that end, we are creating a unified Religious Education program for our five parishes that will offer all families with children, Kindergarten through 8th Grade, the opportunity for effective and supportive faith formation in a variety of settings. A mailing containing specific information, including scheduling and registration, is being sent to the homes of all registered families who have school age children. (Please call your parish office if you do not receive the Religious Education mailing.) For now all families should be aware of the following: The program will begin with Masses celebrating Catechetical Sunday on September 20 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas in California and 10:30 a.m. at Ave Maria in Bentleyville. Classes for students will begin on Sunday, September 27 or on October 4, depending on location. (Specific information to follow.)

Families with children in Kindergarten through 6th Grade will have the option of attending classes at either site. Grade Catechists Needed - All Parishes As a new academic year is now underway, much effort is in process to begin the new religious education year among our parishes featuring a new regional model for the formation of our children and families. For the religious education program in Bentleyville, a catechist is needed for 6th grade. For the religious educa-tion program in California, catechists are needed for grades: 4 & 5. If you have been a catechist in our parishes at an earlier time or if you wish to be considered to serve as an aid, kindly contact Sherry Messick for the religious edu-cation program in California and Kathy Heino for the reli-gious education program in Bentleyville. Special thanks to those who responded generously to the request listed in the last edition of the regional bulletin to serve as catechists in our regional program for this year! All persons involved with our religious education pro-gram must comply with the Safe Environment Policies in the Diocese of Pittsburgh including background checks, Protecting God’s Children’s Workshop, Pastoral Code of Conduct and all other clearances.

The ChristLife Series: Following Christ Following Christ is a seven-week journey that explores and encourages Catholic discipleship. Following Christ helps those who have completed Discovering Christ to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. This is accomplished through the grace of God by praying together, teaching, and supporting

one another in some of the basic disciplines and truths practiced by Christians since the early Church. Any parishioners who attended Discovering Christ this past spring is invited and encouraged to attend Following Christ which will begin this week on Monday, September 14, 2015 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Ave Maria Hall. There is still time to register by simply calling the Admin-istration Center at 724-239-3591. Following Christ will continue each Monday from 7:00—9:00 p.m. through October 26. A Retreat Day for the program will be held on Saturday, October 17 in Ave Maria Hall.

The ChristLife Series: Discovering Christ Discovering Christ is a seven-week experience that invites us to hear the Good News and personally encoun-ter Jesus Christ. Discovering Christ is for everyone. The program helps participants enter into or renew a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, experience the love of God, and be empowered by the Holy Spirit to live as God’s children. It is our hope and prayer that many parishioners from our five parishes will take advantage of the next oppor-tunity for the Discovering Christ program which is set to begin on Thursday, October 8, 2015 and continue for seven consecutive Thursdays through November 19. Theses seven sessions will be held in Ave Maria Hall from 6:30—9:00 p.m. and will include a meal. There is also a Retreat Day scheduled for Saturday, November 7. All are invited and encouraged to participate! Please register by filling out the form located at the doors of the Church, or by calling the Administra-tion Center at 724-239-3591.

Pastor’s Corner

Reverend Edward L. Yuhas, Moderator / Team Ministry

Dear Friends in Christ: As Father Paul and myself transition into the “Team Ministry” model in serving the five parishes of our region, in the last edition of the regional bulletin, we provided information sharing by way of beginning to define the use of some terms to help all of us understand the regional model of ministry. The term: “Multiple Parish Ministry” (referred hereafter as MPM) means that one or more priests are entrusted with the care of more than one parish. MPM is not a recent phenomenon nationally and in our own Diocese of Pittsburgh. For some time sociologists have been tracking the shortage of priests and its impact on the Church. Pastoral planners have been engaged in work with the consequences of rising numbers of Catholics in certain areas, the rela-tively static number of parishes, and the declining number of priests available for ministry. The United States Confer-ence of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has published: “The Study of the impact of Fewer Priests on the Pastoral Minis-try,” which identified several practices being used in the United States to deal with the increasing challenges of providing pastoral care. These were: (1) closing parishes; (2) creating lager parishes; (3) appointing Parish Life Col-laborators; (4) enlisting foreign born clergy; and (5) assigning priests as pastors to multiple parishes. The practice of MPM is the fastest growing and most frequently implemented practice nationwide. It is anticipated that the number of faith communities sharing a pastor will surpass 55% in the next five years. A collaborative spirit was stressed by Pope Saint John Paul II in his encyclical letter: Christifideles Laici, when he writes that Church lead-ership should seek “adaptations of the parish structures according to the full flexibility granted by Canon Law, espe-cially in promoting participation by the lay faithful in pastoral responsibilities. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has spoken of the “co-responsibility of the entire parish” noting that “the parish priest is no longer the only one to animate every-thing.” In his encyclical letter: Evangelii Guadium, our Holy Father Pope Francis speaks of the model of ministry guid-ed with an “impulse capable of transforming everything, so that the Church’s customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, language and structures can be suitably channeled for the evangelization of today’s world.” Collaboration in MPM can energize everyone involved through the infusion of the Holy Spirit, who is at work within them and through them. This is the prayer of Father Paul and myself as we seek ways among our parishioners to encourage the understanding of all the baptized to respond to God’s call to be collaborators in building the kingdom of God among our regional parishes.

Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 13, 2015 The Lord God is my help,

therefore I am not disgraced.

— Isaiah 50:7

GOD’S WORD TODAY The first line of today’s first reading from the prophet Isaiah seems to pick up the themes from last week’s readings. Isaiah tells us that “the Lord God opens my ear that I may hear.” As we open our hearts to hear God’s word today, let us be prepared to fashion an answer to the question posed by Jesus to his disci-ples: “Who do people say that I am?” Each of us has experi-enced the presence of the Lord Jesus in our lives. When did the Lord Jesus become your own personal Lord and Savior? Too often we think this question is appropriate only for evangelical Christians. As Catholics we can be put off by such a question, yet that question—and its answer—are at the core of who we are as followers of Christ. Invite the Lord into your heart in new ways as the scriptures are proclaimed today. Ponder the Lord’s question before Mass and place yourself within the circle of Christ’s disciples as the passage from Saint Mark’s Gospel is proclaimed. Regional Gathering of

Guilds - All Parishes On Thursday, September 3, 2015 a historic moment took place among our regional parishes with the gathering of women from each of the guilds of the region. Father Ed and Father Paul asked the guilds to begin to part-

ner together for spiritual and social occasions to build community among the women of all five parishes of our region as we seek ways to build unity among our faith communities in our regional model of ministry.

The Saint Thomas Aquinas Guild hosted the “Meet and Greet” evening reflecting a “Beach” theme as we prepared to observe Labor Day last week. Debbie Kallis as the Guild President welcomed all and introduced the members of that guild. Debbie provided a great reflection on the call we have received to become a “Team,” citing that team means for us: “T”ogether, “E”veryone “A”chieves “M”ore! Father Ed then spoke thanking the Saint Thomas Guild for hosting the event and thanking all those who came to the meet and greet event. Father Ed highlighted the proposal Bishop

Zubik has invited all of our five parishes to evaluate, the possibility of forming one parish in Southeast Washington County. Father Ed thanked all who gathered for being women who love Jesus, women of faith, and women of the Church as he led the prayer of blessing over the gathering and for the food provided. A wonderful array of food was then partaken by all who

gathered and much conversation occurred among the participants as we seek ways to strive to build greater unity among our parish-es. Nancy Yakopovich then offered some reflections on the Biblical notion of salt, citing that in the Bible from the Book of Leviticus that the ancient understanding of salt is that of friend-ship and relationship. From the Gospel of Saint Matthew, we all hear the call by Jesus that “You are the salt of the earth.” Each participant in the meet and greet was presented with a packet of salt with the quote by Jesus as a visible reminder of the call we

receive to go forth in this new model of Team Ministry at all levels for every ministry and organization of our regional parishes. Father Paul concluded the gathering with prayer, asking God to help us to be truly salt of the earth – that through our lives of faith that we will respond generously to the call of Jesus partnering together in our regional parishes to build the kingdom of God. We look forward to future guild gather-ings among our parishes. Special words of appreciation and gratitude to Debbie Kallis, John Kallis Lisa Amber, Lynne Gwyer, Nancy Yakopovich, Angie Fowkes, Michele Herron, Kristen Zelnis, Barb Mayers, Barb Vrable, & Jean Timlin. Also gratitude is expressed to all who donated food and/or door prize basket items.
