Sacrament of Confirmation 2019

THIS IS THE FINAL WEEKEND FOR

FORMS TO BE RETURNED. Bishop Paul will be visiting our Parish on Saturday 6th July to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation at the 6.00pm Mass. Those wishing to be confirmed must return an enrolment form which can be obtained from Fr Peter after Mass. Forms must be returned as soon as possible. Candidates must be at least in year 10 of secondary school. There is no upper age limit. Those who apply must attend Church regularly. It is important that the young people concerned take responsibility for putting their name forward themselves and not their parents. This means that they have to request, complete and return the

form themselves. The preparation programme will begin later this term. Sessions will be on Sunday evenings at 6pm. Prospective candidates take on a commitment to attend the preparation programme. On the application form they are asked to say in their own words why they wish to be confirmed. The preparation is aimed at helping those who enrol to come to a better understanding of this sacrament so that they can make an informed decision as to whether they want to go ahead this year or not. To ask to be confirmed is to say 'yes' to playing a part in the mission and work of the Church. In doing so, the candidates are also saying a personal 'yes' to what in most cases their parents said 'yes' to when they brought their children for baptism.

Parish Day of Formation for Readers. Understanding and Communicating the Word of God Saturday 23 March St Aidan's Parish Centre 10:00am to 3:30pm Please bring your own lunch; hot drinks will be provided This event will be held jointly with St Mary's, Old Coulsdon and St John's (Anglican) Church, Old Coulsdon. Rev. Paul Roberts, Rector of St John's, will speak on the theme and lead practical sessions. We ask all readers to make every effort to attend. Anyone else who would like to know more about the ministry of reading is welcome to come along - please let Colin Wilding or Fr Peter ([email protected]) know if you would like to attend.

Car Park Safety We would like to remind everyone of the potential dangers in the car park especially after mass. At this time there are a lot of people and often children playing in the car park while cars are reversing and ma-neuvering in tight spaces. Would parents take special care of their children at this particular time so we can all remain vigilant and avoid any unfortunate accidents.

Reflection on tody’s Gospel by Fr. Kieran O’ Mahoney osa.

We tend to think of the first disciples as somehow “clergy” with a call special to them. But that is not adequate. Jesus is first of all calling disciples, that is ordinary people, including ourselves. Discipleship includes experience, learning and risk. What experiences have brought me this far? What have I learned and am I still learning? How about the call to “put out into the deep”? Is the Lord asking of me a deeper following, both costly and lifegiving? How am I responding? Is there something in me hesitating and holding back? Do I need to hear again the words, “Do not be afraid”?

Prayer

God of surprises, help us to take the risk of following Jesus on a path of discipleship costing “not less than everything.” Help us to let go, that we may live the Gospel fully and richly.
