POPE FRANCIS—PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR NOVEMBER

Evangelization: To witness to the Gospel in Asia That Christians in Asia, bearing witness to the Gospel in word and deed, may promote dialogue, peace, and mutual understanding, especially with those of other religions.

Pastor’s Corner

Who moved my altar? You may have noticed that the altar was recessed

slightly over the weekend. It took practically a football team to move it, since it’s two

solid blocks of hardwood! Why the move? A couple of reasons. The first is to

eliminate ‘foot traffic’ in between the tabernacle and the altar as much as possible.

Jesus is truly present in the tabernacle and often times servers and extraordinary

ministers of holy communion have their backs turned toward the tabernacle. By

moving the altar back, it restricts movement between the tabernacle and the altar to

just the priest, as Church documents recommend. With more space in the front of the altar, the various

ministers can complete their tasks without irreverent body posture toward the Eucharist in the sanctuary

space. When all of us see reverence in the sanctuary, we grow in our love and appreciation of the Blessed

Sacrament—which is the very Love of God, Jesus’ true presence in our midst! We’re putting Jesus first in our

worship.

The second reason is to enable the celebration of the mass from either side of the altar for when we have mass

in the Extraordinary Form on First Saturdays (according to the 1962 Roman Missal). This month on the first

Saturday, we had a sung mass in the Extraordinary form and, as I mentioned before, it was very well

attended (about 100 people) and 3 extra hours of confession were needed! This revealed to me a hunger in our

community that, as shepherd, I need to be attentive to. It also had the added benefit of being an ‘all

community mass’ since both English and Spanish speakers prayed in the one language of the Church. I know

Latin isn’t everyone’s favorite (most of us, myself included, didn’t study it very much in school), but we have

to admit the Church’s wisdom in using Latin in Mass for so many centuries. Since it is a ‘dead’ language, it’s

meanings don’t change over time. It also isn’t beholden to any particular cultural group—it’s use belongs in a

particular way to the Catholic Church (Hence, we are called ‘Latin Rite’ Catholics!). As such, it is especially

helpful when we come together as many different cultures to pray. We set aside our own cultural biases

(American, Mexican, Japanese, French, South American, African, etc.) and come together into the one

culture, the one language of the Church. All divisions should cease in the Eucharist. What a powerful sign of

unity to pray together in one language as one people!

This is why we have used Latin mass parts at our ‘all community’ masses for big feasts, and we will continue

to do so. The Second Vatican Council document on the Liturgy actually teaches that, “steps should be taken so

that the faithful may also be able to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass

which pertain to them” (Sacrosanctum Concilium 54). If you have a hard time with languages, it is a small

sacrifice to make for the sake of parish unity. (There are videos on YouTube that you can listen to for

practice if you need!) Our world is so divided; as a Church, we need to give witness in our worship and our

parish that race, culture, and language do not have to separate us. It’s the message of Pentecost—the Holy

Spirit unites all the languages of the world and makes them intelligible in the one family of the Church.

May the Holy Spirit bring unity and peace to your families this Thanksgiving. Truly, in Jesus Christ we have

reason for endless thanks (which is what Eucharistia means!) God bless you all!

HEALING THE WHOLE PERSON

Jesus responds today to brokenness, disease, and

pain with transformative love and restoration. Through

three days of teaching, worship, prayer, and

testimony, you’ll encounter God in a powerful way, and

experience deeper freedom as the Father speaks to

you in the depths of your heart and through the

supernatural graces of the sacraments. Whether

you’re struggling with life, or you just want “more” in

your walk with God, this conference will empower you

with tools, revelation, and a greater desire to live your

life passionately on fire for God. Grounded in Church

teaching, you’ll engage the topics of “Facing our

Brokenness,” “Encountering the Father’s Love,” and

“Living in Freedom.” St. Alice Catholic Church is

hosting a Healing the Whole Person retreat, led by the

John Paul II Healing Center, on February 22-24th.

ADVENT SMALL FAITH-SHARING GROUPS:

With Advent only two weeks away,

it’s time to sign up for

small faith-sharing groups.

This year, at St. Alice, our small groups will be using

the book Be Healed: A Guide to Encountering the

Powerful Love of Jesus in Your Life by Dr. Bob

Schuchts in preparation for our Parish Retreat in

February.

Please order books and sign up for small groups in the

vestibule. Books are $13.

Call Danielle at 541-747-7041 for more information.

“This book deeply touched my heart and opened new levels of healing in my life. Whether you are just beginning your healing journey or have been walking this path for years, Be Healed will encour-age, enlighten, challenge, and transform you in your encounter with Jesus Christ. I highly recom-mend it.”

The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) 2017

The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) 2017 is on

Monday 25th December which follows the 4th Sunday

of Advent 24th December. There have been some

questions with regard to the obligations of these Holy

days.

The Archdiocese has determined that each obligation

must be met by attendance at one of the Masses of

the Sunday and one of the Holy day. That is, a

Christmas Mass on the evening of Sunday 24th

December (Vigil or Night) will not satisfy the obligation

for 4th Sunday of Advent.

There are two distinct obligations: that of 4th Sunday

of Advent which can be met by attendance at

anticipatory Masses on Saturday 23rd December or

the morning Masses of Sunday 24th December; and

that of Christmas which can be met by attendance at

Masses on Christmas Eve (Vigil or Night) and those

on Christmas Day.

Led by Fr. Philip Scott, FJ, founder of the

Family of Jesus, a religious community

currently in Peru. His special ministry is

to help the healing of mother and father

wounds so that we may become whole

and be drawn into deeper intimacy with

God. http://www.familiadejesusperu.org

Please help St. Vincent de Paul

provide a healthy, nourishing meal

for nearly 3,000 families and

individuals in our community, by

donating frozen turkeys, hams and

non-perishable foods. Items needed:

broth and gravy, canned olives,

canned vegetables, canned yams/sweet potatoes,

canned pumpkin, protein items: peanut butter, tuna

etc. and sweet treats. A barrel has been placed at the

back of church for your donated items.

THANK YOU!

With your help, St. Alice collected 14 pairs of socks for

Catholic Community Services in support of

Socktoberfest. Thank you so much for your help! Mia

The good news of today’s Gospel is the extravagance of what is being given us. All we need do is be faithful in “small matters.” The cost of fidelity has no comparison to the reward given.

When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you are sharing God’s extravagant love.

RUTH'S CLOSET

The school year has gotten off to a fast start. We

have had numerous requests from several of our

elementary schools. We continue to help our

elementary children with shoes, pants, shirts,

jackets and underwear. The need is very great.

Donations of underwear are always welcome,

especially the smaller sizes. Of course financial

donations are most welcome. Just mark Ruth's

Closet on your envelope. Thank you for your

generosity.
