POPE FRANCIS—PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR JUNE
Universal: Human Solidarity, That the aged, marginalized, and those who have no one may find–even within the huge cities of the world–opportunities for encounter and solidarity.
Evangelization: Seminarians and Novices, That seminarians and men and women entering religious life may have mentors who live the joy of the Gospel and prepare them wisely for their mission.
Hola and hello to you all in Christ Jesus, the one who loves us, saves us, and unites us in
himself. I give thanks to the Lord for these past five years at St. Alice. What a blessing! So many
blessings! I thank you individually and collectively. It’s hard to even remember all the wonderful
things the Lord has done for us in these years. I wish I had started writing this letter a few weeks
ago when I thought to myself I should start writing this letter!
My friend Fr. Oscar Coelho told me soon after I got the call to come here, “Dave, when you
remember that it’s Jesus’ parish—not yours—it gets so much easier.” When I look at the list of
“my accomplishments” here, I am so thankful to have been a part of Jesus’ work here. I’m equally
thankful for all the wonderful parishioners and staff who made everything possible, most always
doing the vast majority of the work. A priest works hard, but usually gets more credit than is really
due. In true humility I can direct any praises to the Lord and to you all. Thank you to all the
dedicated staff and parishioners who accomplished so much during these last years. You
organized the Feasts of St. Alice; you led the Discipleship gatherings and Parish retreats’ you
worked hard at integrating as one community by getting to know one another and learning a new
spirituality for the All-Community Masses. Even when we moved the Tabernacle, it was because
a group of parishioners said, “No, Padre, leave it here in the middle,” after we celebrated the
Mozarabic Mass with Fr. David Benitez from Spain. Then there are things like the Feast of the
Santo Niño where I asked a parishioner if we should celebrate it and the next thing I know it’s
been organized!
I’m thankful too for the relationships that have been formed over these years. As I looked
out upon the body of Christ gathered together for this year’s Feast of St. Alice, I saw the faces of
people I love and care about. When I think of the parishioners who have left the parish for
different reasons, my heart aches for them as well. We’re less because of their absence, and I’m
sad that I alienated some folks along the way. I beg your pardon and theirs, as well.
This evening, a parishioner who was wishing me well said, “Father, just keep preaching that
we need to be united and to love one another.” We are one body, one body in Christ and we do
not stand alone. For the past few years, at the pastoral council’s recommendation I have been
preaching about our unity in Christ. It seems like we have that just about down as a concept we
are willing to or have embraced. As you move forward, I pray you will be able to find a holy
balance of unity and diversity.
I close with the words of wisdom from my freshman religion teacher at Marist,
Br. Brendan: “You are loved. You are loveable. And you are capable of loving.”
Thank you, again, for being such a wonderful parish.
God bless you and love you,
Fr. David Leo Xavier Jaspers

The Mt. Angel Shalom Prayer Center has been a
place of peace, solitude, spiritual enrichment, and
joy for over 45 years. So it is with both sadness
and gratitude that the Benedictine Sisters
announce their plans to close Shalom Prayer
Center and its gift shop as of June 30, 2017. The
need for an ever increasing financial contribution
by the Sisters is the main reason for closing the
prayer center. The Sisters will continue to do
spiritual direction, teach in parishes, and offer
spaces of hospitality for personal retreats at the
monastery. We are very grateful to all who call
Shalom their spiritual home. Of course, current
and new reservations through June of 2017 will
be honored.
Please join us for a retreat for Catholic
families who have family members with
disabilities. This will be held the weekend
of August 26-28 at Aldersgate Conference
Center—just outside of Salem in Turner,
Oregon. This weekend is designed to bring
together Catholic families with children (all
ages) with disabilities to have fun together,
to celebrate, to share faith, to rest and
relax, and to build supportive friendships.
For registration information, call Kelsey
Rea at the Archdiocesan Office for People
with Disabilities at 503-233-8399 or email

In today's Gospel we see how
Jesus, on his way to Jerusalem, sent
"messengers on ahead of Him." To be the
messengers of God, we must know well
what it is God wants to say and do through
us as he sends us out to bring his love to
others.
This week, know that you will be the
"messenger of God" in bringing hope to the poor
by your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
CHURCH CLEAN-UP UPDATE
Thanks to the Discipleship Group for cleaning the
church and Parish hall. We cleaned the pews,
dewebbed, vacuumed and cleaned the bathrooms.
Our next cleaning will be Saturday, July 16th from 9-
11am. We will be asking anyone in the parish to sign
up if you are interested since we have no group
representing that month. We will have a sign up sheet
a few weeks before the date in the church.
All are welcome to come and participate. Just bring
yourself and we will provide the rest. Many hands
make light work. Together we can do great things for
OUR church.
