MOTTO OF THIS ACADEMIC YEAR

"Abide in my love"(Jn. 15:9)

Jesus invites his disciples to abide in his love. God islove and God created man out of His abundant love. Thefinal end of human life is God. Man's final end is to searchfor God and to abide in him. Only in the fullness of love, onecan attain this final end. Servant of God Mar Ivanios qualifiesit as possessing God. He says possessing God is better thanservice of God. It is the obiligation of every man to possessGod through love. In the Gospel of St. John, as an answer tothe question of disciples "Where are you staying"; Jesusanswers "Come and see" (Jn.1:38,39). It is an invitation toabide in him and to experience his love. Vocation is a call topossess God by abiding in his love. It is a call to be with himand to experience his love. It is a call to grow in the perfectionof love to become like him grounding oneself in prayer.

Vocation to Priesthood is primary a call to becomeanother Christ. Jesus loved the eternal Father more thananything else in this world and he loved the world that hegave his life for the salvation of it. This love of Christ is theperfect model for a Priest. He should abide in this love ofChrist. Seminary formation is Primarily a training to abidein the love of God and a training to become another Christ.The real Guru of a Seminarian is Christ and he should formhimself following the footsteps of this Guru. Prayer, rules,community life and everything of Seminary formation shouldbe the means to abide in Christ. Priests should be theambassadors of God's love.

The Church is fully aware that the desired renewal of thewhole Church depends in great part upon the priestlyministry animated by the spirit of Christ and it solemnly affirmsthe critical importance of priestly training (OT). The hopes of theChurch and the salvation of the souls are thus committed to thispriestly formation. St.Aloysius minor Seminary, in a special wayparticipates in this spirit of the Catholic Church by giving excellentand comprehensive formation for priesthood in the MajorArchieparchy of Trivandrum.

As the Malankara Catholic Community grew considerablyunder the able leadership of His Grace Mar Ivanios it had theobjective of reuniting various Christian denominations. With theerection of Malankara Hierarchy, Malankara Catholic Churchwas totally endowed with this mission. But found it difficult toexecute this mission due to the lack of sufficient priests andmissionaries. With this view in mind, His Grace decided to starta minor seminary for the Archdiocese of Trivandrum so that thechurch could promote priestly vocation and form young men forpriesthood in its proper ecclesial millieu.

Archbishop Mar Ivanios, the Servant of God appointed Fr.Mathew Pothnammuzhy as the Rector, Professor and Spiritualdirector. He hailed from the Archdiocese of Ernakulam and theArchBishop of Ernakulam, the Most Rev.Augustine Kandathillent laudable service by providing enthusiastic young men imbuedwith genuine missionary zeal from the Syro-Malabar Church towork in the Malankara Catholic missions.l Formal Inauguration

The seminary was formally inaugurated under the patronageof St.Aloysius, on 21 June 1934, the feast of the saint, the universalprotector, patron of youth especially seminarians. After fourvaluable years of service Rev. Pothnammuzhy went back to hisnative diocese and the Holy see later appointed him as the firstBishop of the newly erected diocese of Kothamangalam.

The Seminary started working in a temporary buildingadjacent to the Little Flower Parish Church, Pattom. This pieceof land was bought on 26 Nov, 1932. The Seminary lackedproper infrastructure and the members were in poor livingcondition.

l Shifting of the Seminary

His Grace was in a dire need to buy a plot of land as thegovernment had asked him to evacute "Saravanakunnu'' (Thepresent Archbishop's House - Thirusannidi) where he was livingin a rented home. His Grace brought nine acres of landcomprising the plot where now stands the St.Mary's Cathedral.When the number of Seminarians increased, the seminary wasshifted to the St.Mary's Cathedral Compound but there was nopermanent structure as yet.

l Permanent Structure

In 1938 the construction of a stable building for theArchbishop's residence and seminary started in the newlyacquired plot. The work was completed within a year and boththe Archbishop's House and the Seminary were shifted to thenew apartment forthwith.

His Grace Mar Ivanios made it a point to celebrate HolyQurbono and to recite the prayers of the Hours with theSeminarians whenever he was in the House. Rev.Fr.BenedictOIC, later Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios came everydayto the seminary from the Bethany Ashram to teach Latin. Fr.JohnElanjileth and Fr.Phlip Thuruthiyil were the first Seminarians fromthe Malankarites to become diocesan priests for the Archdiocesein the year 1937. In 1938, Zacharias Polachirackal, later theBishop of Tiruvalla Zacharias Mar Athanasios joined theSeminary for the diocese of Tiruvalla as they had no Seminary oftheir own at that time.

In 1938 Fr.Thomas Nangachiveettil returned from Romeafter his studies and was appointed as the Rector. Since thenthe Seminary has been guided under the outstanding leadershipof many priests who acted as Rectors, Vice - rectors, spiritualdirectors and as teaching staff.

l The Establishment of the Major Seminary and theShifting of Minor Seminary

The Syro-Malankara Hierarchy under the chairmanshipof His Grace Benedict Mar Gregorios decided to start a MajorSeminary for training priests in our ecclesial background andtradition and Trivandrum was chosen as its seat. In 1983 as atemporary arrangement, the Major Seminary started functioningas St.Mary's Malankara Seminary in the buildings of theSt.Aloysius Seminary, Pattom. Consequently, the MinorSeminarians were temporarily shifted to two places, the FirstYears to the Archbishop's House, Pattom, and the Second andThird Years to the Pastoral Orientation Centre at Kuravankonam.This arrangement caused considerable incovenience to theformation of the Minor Seminarians. In 1989 as the constructionof the first phase of the Major Seminary building at Nalanchirawas completed the Major Seminary was shifted to Nalanchiraand the Minor Seminary could resume functioning in its ownhouse at Pattom.

l The Solicitude of Mar Gregorios for the Seminary

His Grace Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios (1953-1994f) of happy memory had given prime importance for theformation of the Seminarians during his life time. Even in hisbusy schedule he often found time to be with the seminariansand to pray together with them. On several occasions he madethe Seminary his second home to work peacefully and to enjoya little free time.

l New Apartment for the Seminary

When His Grace Archbishop Cyril Mar Baselios laterMoran Mor Cyril Baselios Catholicos took charge of theArchdiocese, the number of priestly vocations increased andthe old building was insufficient to accommodate the candidates.Hence, the First Year Seminarians were again shifted toKuravankonam in 1999. With the intention of starting a PastoralCenter for the Archdiocese, His Grace started constructing athree-storeyed building in the old compound of the Archbishop'sHouse and that of the Seminary. Considering the need of the

Seminary and the steady increase of the priestly vocations, HisGrace changed his mind and the new block was given to theSeminary. The first phase of the building was completed andblessed on 29th January 2000 and the Seminary was shiftedfrom Kuravankonam over to the new building at Pattom, In theyear 2002 an additional fourth floor also was constructed.

The Late Major Archbishop Cyril Baselios Catholicosdesired to shift the seminary to the Bethany Hills and thefoundation stone for the new building was blessed on August 4,2005 on the feast day of St.JohnMarie Vianney, the Patron saintof the diocesan priests. The work came to completion due tothe continious hardship, prayer and perseverance of many andSt.Aloysius Seminay's new building was blessed on May 14,2007 by the Major Archbishop Baselios Cleemis Catholicos,the head and father of Malankara Archiepiscopal Church. In2012 the Seminary temporarily shiffted to Mar GregoriosRenewal Centre, Nalanchira and again it is shifted to the oldPastoral Centre, Kuravankonam for a temporary period. Thework for the new building of the seminary is started and thefoundation stone was blessed by this Holiners Pope Francis andit was laid by this Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios CleemisCatholicos on January 02, 2014 at Kesavadasapuram.l Formation at Present

The Seminary aims at providing the candidates forpriesthood, an opportunity to respond to their call and to freelydecide their own state of life. Since Jesus Christ is the idealPriest, it is above all, from Him that the seminarians should learnwhat exactly priesthood is. Therefore, they should always lookupon Jesus Christ as the model and exemplar of priesthood.Thus, they should try their best to follow Jesus closely. Thus, asit is envisaged in both the Second Vatican Council and theApostolic letter Pastores Dabo Vobis the Seminary concentratesmainly on four levels of formation for the Seminarians namely:Spiritual, Educational Pastoral and Human.

The Minor Seminary course extends for a period of three tofour years. The first year is intended for acquiring sufficientknowledge in humanities and in spiritual and priestly life. Duringthis course they are also provided with sufficient knowledge in

Spirituality, Bible, Liturgy, Church History, Catechism, Etiquette,Personality Development and Music. Besides these, they areoffered ample opportunities to increase their skills in languagessuch as English, Syriac and Malayalam. The progress of theSeminarians in all these is closely watched and if foundsatisfactory, they are recommended for the Higher SecondaryCourse, to equip them better for studies in the Major Seminary.

After their formation in the Minor Seminary the Seminariansare sent to St.Mary’s Malankara Major Seminary for courses inPhilosophy and Theology. Of late a few students are sent toother Major Seminaries like Alwaye, Kottayam and Trissur forspecial reasons. Later, the Synodal Commission has decided tosend the Philosophy students to various seminaries in order toget a wide range of knowledge about different cultures, rites etc.For this reason the phylosophy course in the St Mary's MalankaraMajor Seminary has stopped for a temporary period and thestudents are now sent to various seminaries such as Pune,Bangalore, Nagpore, Kottayam, Trissur, Aluva and Makkiyad.Ujjain.

The Seminarians are provided with a ‘Hand Book’, thecontent of which are as follows: A glimpse into the life ofSt.Aloysius Gonzaga (the Patron), a brief history of the Seminary,Programme of general formation, important annual events,financial matters, guidelines (rules and regulations), and timetable.For the spiritual evaluation of the seminarians a ‘Spiritual Diary’is given, in which they note down their spiritual growth inconsultation with their respective spiritual directors. Likewise,Norms for the Regents and for the Vacation Bible OrientationCourses are also provided.

The seminarians are also given enough opportunities topromote their talents in arts, games and sports. Besides, thereare the annual picnic, weekly evening walk, and monthly half/fullday outings to help widen their vision in the fast changing modernworld.

The formation in the seminary is the combined effort ofthe formators, the seminarians and the members of their family.The expenditure of the Seminarians is partially met by thevoluntary donations of our faithful here and elsewhere.
