Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Solemnity of Easter Sunday: Resurrection of the Lord: In the second reading today, St. Paul reminds the Colossians that they have been raised with Christ, exhorting them to “think about the things above rather than things of earth.” We, too, have been raised with Christ. Let us rejoice and be glad! Colossians 3:2

MASS INTENTIONS FOR HOLY WEEK:

E A S T E R 2 0 1 6 Once again, the stone has been rolled back, the tomb is empty and the angels tell us “He is risen as He said, Alleluia.” The joy and glory of resurrection again fills us—fills us as believing Christians and as a believing faith community. We have journeyed the 40 days of Lent to reach this moment. We have walked in faith to the Via Dolorosa. In faith we have climbed the hill of Calvary—we have experienced these moments of salvation. Now those moments are past and we glory in Easter joy. As St. Paul tells us “if Christ is not risen, vain is your faith, but Christ is risen.” As we now journey into the Easter season and we do so with special expectations this year. We await the arrival of our new pastor. And as we do this we also recall in prayer the life and ministry of Msgr. Gabriel Gonzales. We as your priests wish you all the joys of this Holy Season and the blessings and grace it brings to all of us.

This Week: Saturday, March 26th / Sunday, March 27th Solemnity of Easter Sunday: Resurrection of the Lord

To Receive Holy Communion (For those who are sick, hospitalized, or home bound). Please call Gloria Bowen, Eucharistic Minister to the sick at 310-670-5971.

Reflections on Today’s Readings: FOCUS: Alleluia, He is Risen. Truly, He is Risen. The significance of the empty tomb was seemingly beyond the comprehension of Peter and Mary Magdalen. It was the beloved apostle, Jon, who understood the implication. He saw I and believed. When we trust whole-heartedly in Christ, we witness things that seemingly defy human comprehension. Easter is evidence of that. The love of the cross triumphs over sin and death. From humiliation, brutality and pain come redemption and salvation. Alleluia indeed! LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, Peter preaches about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The second reading encourages believers of Christ to think of what is above, not what is on earth. In the Gospel, Mary Magdalen, Peter and the beloved disciple witness the empty tomb. Peter is confused, but the beloved disciples sees the empty tomb and believes.

W O R K S o f M E R C Y Catholic Ministries that embody MERCY! “Apart from the mercy of God there is no other source of hope for mankind,” Pope John Paul II preached 14 years ago. For this Year of Mercy, Pope Francis called for a “revolution of tender-ness.” He has asked Catholics to “cultivate the tenderness of God toward each one of us” and to “commit to making our own the mercy of the Good Samaritan.”Catholic tradition has identi-fied a few particular ways of cultivating that tenderness and mercy of God: the seven corporal and the seven spiritual works of Mercy. This year the Church is urging all Catholics to redis-cover and practice these works in a very intentional way.

Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith…

DRAWN INTO THE STORY “We are witnesses!” The scripture readings for Easter Sunday concentrate on details reported by eyewitnesses. Listen carefully and you will be drawn into the stories yourself. Peter reports the good works Jesus did, his death on the cross, and his resurrection. The passage from John’s Gospel has us running to the empty tomb with Peter and John and peering inside to see the cloths used to cover Jesus’ body. Psalm 118 sums up our response: “It is wonderful in our eyes!” What resurrection details do we see in our lives today? How have we died to our old lives and been raised up again with Jesus? Let us pay attention to the new life around us. It is wonderful in our eyes. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE MSGR. GABE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Fr. Gabe was passionate about education. He was deeply concerned for the needy and less privileged and often spoke of his concern about the affordability of Catholic Education for families. To honor his dedicated service the Parish has established a scholarship fund. This fund will provide Our Pastor the ability to help families in financial distress access Catholic education at St. Anastasia Catholic School. Please consider Giving to this Memorial fund to benefit the children of St. Anastasia. A special giving account has been established in the Online Giving Portal to accept credit or debit cards. The web address is http://www.st-anastasia.org/giving/monsignor-gabe-scholarship-fund or contact the Rectory Office at 310-670-2243. You can also make a check payable to St. Anastasia Church and note Msgr. Gabe Memorial fund in the memo. Mail to: St. Anastasia Parish 7390 W. Manchester Avenue Los Angeles, California 90045.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Fifty years or so ago, it was popular to teach that every Sunday is a “Little Easter.” Today, after several decades of intense liturgi-cal reform, it is more proper to think of today as a “Big Sunday.” On every Sunday of the year, the Church is obliged to assemble, keeping the day holy. In most places, we hardly attain the goal of gathering all who are in Christ by baptism. Look around today and see what a Big Sunday looks like! Our tradition speaks of remembering, an-amnesis, as the antidote to “amnesia,” the tragic forgetting of who God is and who we are as God’s most beloved creation. On this Easter day, we are at our very best. We re-member who God is, and we remember who we are in God’s eyes: beloved sons and daughters, reborn to eternal life in baptismal waters. We rekindle our candles and reclaim our baptismal promises. As a “Big Sunday,” to-day also reflects the character of festivity and leisure that should mark every Lord’s Day. We wear “Sunday best” today, and we may take some time, especially in the northern states, to stroll through a budding garden. It is truly a “Big Sunday,” and how different our lives would be if we took its values and traditions forward into all the Sundays of our lives. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Ministry in Community…

MYTHS: human trafficking: Human trafficking is an issue that has received extensive attention lately in local and

national news, yet the issue can be confusing and is often misunderstood. Many people believe that a victim must be moved from one location to another, or across state or international borders. Transportation is only one element. It is important for us to remember that victims could be exploited in their own states and neighbor-hoods, or even at home. We need to pay particular attention to the reality that children, one of the most vulnerable and sought-after populations by traffickers, could be victims of trafficking and yet could still come home every night for dinner, sleep in their own beds, and be present at school every day, as the traffickers will do whatever they need to do to avoid detection. Easter Sunday But Peter got up and run to the tomb,

bent down, and saw the burial cloths alone; then he went home amazed at what had happened.

Luke 24:12 On Easter morning, the disciples were terrified. They were heart-broken too—aching from the loss of their friend and crushed that God had let them down. When they heard that Jesus’ body was not in the tomb, they were stunned. They didn’t know what to think. Everything would become clear when the risen Christ appeared to them. But on this day, they could only wonder and hold their breath, not knowing what God would do next. We don’t know what God will do next either. We can only wait in joy and hope for whatever is yet to come! Risen Lord, open my heart to whatever you have in store for all of us!
