MASS INTENTIONS FOR THIS WEEK:

SURPRISES Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The scriptures are filled with stories of God’s surprises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated highest up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, exalted to eternal, heavenly glory. Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are filled with opportunities for surprises. For the bridegroom in today’s Gospel story, who has no direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant surprise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus. We may think that the point of today’s familiar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus, our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have faith in Christ means that somebody’s life—not necessarily our own—will be surprised for the better. Copyright © J. Reflections on Today’s Readings:

FOCUS: God gives us each unique gifts and talents that we are to use to further the mission of the Church. Today’s second reading from Corinthians reminds us that God has given each of us unique gifts which we are to use to help build up the kingdom of God on earth. Living this out requires ongoing prayer and discernment to identify our gifts and talents, and the resolve and determination to live in service to God and our neighbor. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The first reading from Isaiah speaks of God’s love for the people of Israel. The second reading from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians speaks of the special gifts, or charisms, which are given to the baptized for the sake of the Church. The Gospel recounts the first miracle of Jesus at the wedding feast in Cana.

Did you miss last year’s OneLife LA? You won’t want to miss it this year! On January 23, 2016, join Archbishop Gomez and tens of thousands in downtown Los Angeles for the second annual OneLife LA, an event celebrating the beauty and dignity of every human life from conception to natural death. How do parents handle an admission of abuse? No parent wants their children to

suffer from abuse of any kind. However, if a child discloses any instance of abuse, how you handle this information is critical to their well-being. One of the most important things you can do when a child discloses their abuse is not over react, despite the strong and often overwhelming emotions of anger that you are experiencing at that moment. Be certain that you show the child great love and concern through calm, reflective words of understanding and compassion. For a copy of the Virtus® article “After Abuse is Disclosed” and more tips on how to handle abuse disclosures email [email protected].

Spend the Jubilee of Mercy Year with the Traveling Holy Family!

Pope Francis said the infant Jesus with his mother Mary and with St. Joseph are a shining example of mercy and salvation

for the entire world (Vatican Radio, 2014). What better way to start off the new year than with the Holy Family in prayer, reflection and companionship? Send an email to [email protected] to reserve time with the Holy Family statues. You can request a statue to reside with your family for a period of 1-4 weeks. The statues can be picked up by the receiving family during a short but faith-filled blessing by the Presider during Sunday Mass with advance notice, or the statues can be dropped off and picked up from the Rectory.

We are called to keep growing in the faith!

The Religious Education Congress can foster that growth! The theme for the Religious Education Congress 2016 – "Boundless Mercy" – takes its inspiration from the Gospel story of Jesus meeting the woman at the well and from the Jubilee Year of Mercy convoked by Pope Francis. The weekend of February 26-28th (plus Youth Day on the 25th) is full of nationally-known speakers, music, liturgy, and exhibitors from all over the world. Register on-line or request hardcopy registration books at: http://www.recongress.org

Ministry in Community…

Kids Living Faith: Sunday, January 17th, 2016

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit. 1 Cor 12:4 “Jennifer is great at everything,” Kate complained to her dog. “And she has more friends than I ever will!” Whenever Kate compared herself to her older sister, she ended up feeling like a loser. “At least you like me,” Kate muttered as her dog licked her hand. Kate needed to see that she was unique and that she even had a special way with dogs and other animals. Everyone has different abilities, talents and gifts. God made us that way on purpose. When you’re tempted to compare, remember that the world needs your own unique qualities.

God, thank you for all the ways I am unique.

FACT OF LIFE January 22 Day Of Prayer For The Legal

Protection Of Unborn Children A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world.

Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer. Pope Saint John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, no. 100* The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373, designates January 22 as a particu-lar day of prayer and penance, called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion.” As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms.

Together in Mission 2016 Campaign

TODAY is Announcement Weekend. Inserted in this week’s bulletin is a two-fold flyer which presents a letter from the Archbishop of Los Angeles, Most Reverend Jose H. Gomez, an amazing article about “God’s Love in Action”, and a summary of the results of the 2015 Campaign. Commitment Weekend is Jan. 23-24. This year Mr. Anthony Sciacca - Director of Together in Mission Campaign for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles - we'll be with us and he will make the presentation on Commitment Sunday. The needs of parishes and schools in the most impacted parts of our Diocese are in great need of our support. These parishes and schools will provide the leaders of our Diocese in the future decades.

REMINDERS: * TODAY, Sunday, January 17, the St. Joseph Center Collection will take place after all the Masses. This collection benefits the poorest and needy of the Westside area. Your donations of cash/non-perishable food are greatly appreciated. Thank you for you generosity.
