Ashes to Ashes During my first Ash Wednesday service as a priest, I was charged with leading my churchs version of Childrens Chapel. I did not look forward to this responsibility: I couldnt imagine that the themes of mortality and penitence would make for great Chil- drens liturgy. There arent many go-to childrensongs that sing about the return to dust. I was also particularly aware that a few of the children who had suffered a terrible loss that year. Three sisters (two children and one youth who was helping out) had lost their father that year to a sudden and unexpected illness. How on earth was I to speak about Ash Wednesday while simultaneously steering clear of their pain and loss? I wasnt giving the children enough credit. They didnt want me to stay away from things that caused them pain. They didnt want me to play it safe. They wanted to know that God knew what they felt. They wanted the liturgy to speak honestly about heartbreak and loss. As I began to speak of what the ashes meant, I noticed how attentive the sisters became. To the best of my rec- ollection, I spoke of Gods eternal love and of Gods awareness of our grief. When the children came to the rail to receive ashes, they were fearless about it. I suddenly realized the importance of the ashes the moment that the sisters knelt down. As I offered the words, I felt my own heart break: Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.Ash Wednesday may be a somber service, but it not reserved for grown-ups. Pain, loss and even the need for penitence are something that we all experience throughout our lives. This year we will add a 6:30 pm service on Ash Wednesday which all members of the church (including families with children) are welcome and en- couraged to attend. Ashes to Ashes During my first Ash Wednesday service as a priest, I was charged with leading my church’s version of Children’s Chapel. I did not look forward to this responsibility: I couldn’t imagine that the themes of mortality and penitence would make for great Chil-dren’s liturgy. There aren’t many go-to children’ songs that sing about the return to dust. I wasn’t giving the children enough credit. They didn’t want me

to stay away from things that caused them pain. They didn’t want me to play it safe. They wanted to know that God knew what they felt. They wanted the liturgy to speak honestly about heartbreak and loss. As I began to speak of what the ashes meant, I noticed how attentive the sisters became. To the best of my rec-ollection, I spoke of God’s eternal love and of God’s awareness of our grief. When the children came to the rail to receive ashes, they were fearless about it. I suddenly realized the importance of the ashes the moment that the sisters knelt down. As I offered the words, I felt my own heart break: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Ash Wednesday may be a somber service, but it not reserved for grown-ups. Pain, loss and even the need for penitence are something that we all experience throughout our lives. This year we will add a 6:30 pm service on Ash Wednesday which all members of the church (including families with children) are welcome and en-couraged to attend. Together, we will begin the season of lent with our eyes set on the resurrection. BJ+

Endowment Fund Challenge Grant

Through the generosity of one of St. Andrew’s parishioners the congregation has been challenged to match

a donation to the endowment fund up to the amount of $10,000. This challenge will be conducted until

Easter (April 5th).

The Endowment Fund Committee wishes to bring this wonderful opportunity to a full fruition by encouraging all the members of the congregation to donate to the endowment fund.

Please send your checks made out to St. Andrew’s Challenge Grant to the attention of “Business Manager”

at the parish office.

Note that while the current balance in the fund is $309,000 the sooner we reach the goal of $500,000 the

fund will then be able to release the interest on the fund back to the ministry of the church, distributed as follows:

1/3 for Education, 1/3 for Outreach, 1/3 for Capital improvement or Debt reductions.

This amount should equate to what is being currently generate by the Annual Bazaar.

Please note that all weekly announcements must be sent by email to [email protected] by noon on Mondays and that the Harmony’s new due date is the 10th of every month.

Introducing Andy’s Adventures:

Just a quick note to let everyone know that “Lunch & Learn” is now called “Andy’s Adventurers.” Along with the name change comes a change in format. We will meet several times a year instead of monthly. Some ideas we think might be fun are: a local play; a trip to Raleigh museums; and a visit to Homeland Creamery. Please share your thoughts, questions, and ideas with us as you wait for further information. Contact either Linda Cummer at 336 852-8749/ lindacummer67@gmail or Bonnie Holland at 336 855-0402/[email protected].

Feast of the Presentation of

our Lord

The Garay family—Jose David, Mabel, Soleil and Fernando — would like to thank their

family at St. Andrews for all the love and

support that they have received since Daryel

Gabriel was born on Dec. 18th, and they

hope many will join them in welcoming little Daryel into the community of faith in

baptism on Feb.1st at the main Sunday

service.

Dec. 30th Holy Innocents Service draws a diverse congregation and

opens eyes to reality of violence against children

During the 12 Days of Christmas, our

bilingual worshipping community observed

the Feast of the Holy Innocents with a special service that brought together

Episcopalians from 4 different Greensboro

churches and 3 different countries. Many

came because they were involved with Las

Posadas and wanted to continue this fellowship. Remembering King Herod’s

murder of Bethlehem’s boy children, our

attention was brought to all the young

people in our world who suffer and are

killed unjustly.

A special collection was taken to assist in upcoming mission efforts and community

events in March and April that will seek to

address violence affecting children, such as

domestic abuse, joblessness and

homelessness.

ers for all the world’s children who suffer violence.

Mission Spotlight

MLK, Jr Day of Service

Over 30 volunteers of all ages (and many more who

donated) came together on January 19, and we

enhanced our relationship with FaithAction International House and the families they serve by

sponsoring a donations drive for their Immigrant

Assistance Emergency food and diaper Pantry.

Thank you to all who were a part of this day; we

collected a mountain of diapers and food!

Along the way, we shared our passions for mission

with each other and made connections that will

allow us as individuals, families and as a faith

community to work together in the future for the

sake of God’s dream to heal a hurting world.

Our children learn what’s important by what they see us doing, and

this is why we encourage parents and guardians to make reading the

Bible a part of their lives at home. Studies have shown that kids who not only have their own Bibles but also see their parents reading are

more likely to pick up the Bible on their own and cherish God’s Word

that they find there. In December and January the Ministry with

Children focused on different ways to read the Scriptures as families

(such as an Advent read-along shown above) to encourage and equip parents in this practice.

Let the word of Christ

dwell in you richly.

Daily Office in Lent

Lent has been a time of prayer, discipline, and reflection since the ear-

liest Christians. As part of your Lenten disciplines this year, we invite

everyone to take up the practice of the daily office every Thursday in

Lent. We will offer both morning prayer (7:00AM) and evening prayer

(5:30PM) in the chapel on Thursdays in Lent. These services offer an

opportunity to center our lives on God as part of our weekly routines.

Moreover, the daily office is at the center of the Benedictine tradition

that we will study Wednesday evenings in Lent.

Thursdays

in Lent:

Morning Prayer 7:00 AM

Evening Prayer 5:30 PM

We will begin this season of prayer by discussing the history of the dai-

ly office, its place in the Anglican tradition, and the joys of a daily pray-

er practice on Sunday, February 15th during the Adult Formation hour.

For those interested in leading or in learning more about the structure

of the services, Jen Feather will lead a workshop on Sunday, February

15th at 12:15. We will be done by 1PM. For more information email

Jen Feather at [email protected].

Thanksgiving for a Gift of Music Thanks to the generous gift of an anonymous parishioner, St. Andrew’s is able to offer the voices of an additional 2 two section leaders in our choir every Sunday. Two section leader positions are already a part of our annual budget, and the addition of two more – for a full team of four – adds depth and beauty to the music of our choir. Please join me in giving thanks for this gift that will continue to enrich our worship all year long.

Sunday Service times in Lent and Easter Seasons

During the seasons of Lent and Easter (Feb. 22-May 24) our Sunday service times will change. Services of Holy Eucharist will be held at 8and 10am, with a Sunday Class for Adults held between the services. Fel-lowship, Children’s Formation and Small-Group Study will all happen after the 10am service, beginning at approximately 10:15.

Why are we trying this out? Quite simply, we hope to build a community time in which a much greater number of parishioners can participate in Sunday fellowship and study.

While some of our areas of ministry thrive on a Sunday morning, others struggle to build momentum. This temporary change will help us to explore new models for:

1) Engaging, formative and robust programs for children and youth outside of the worship service

2) Adult sessions and classes that allow many parishioners (and many perspectives) to engage the ideas of Christian practices, ethics, history and liturgy

3) Lively fellowship that continues to engage a great number of our parishioners each Sunday, and welcomes many who have not yet done so

While some will find this a welcome change, others will find it challenging. This is simply a trial period to see how our time together is impacted by our schedule. In the summertime we will return to our regular 10:30 schedule, and solicit feedback to see how Sunday “felt” with the changed service times.

Page 9 February 2015

Benedictine Tradition in Lent Beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 25th, BJ Owens will lead a four-session study on Benedictine Spirituality. The Rule of St. Benedict, established in the 6th century by St. Benedict of Nursia, established a rhythm of monastic life that gave shape to religious orders through the centuries, and is still in widespread use. Profoundly countercultural, the Rule aligns the rhythms of daily life around the values of work, study, stability, and prayer. A study of Benedict’s monastic patterns reveals a great many gifts for our own spiritual practice today, and can deepen our own walk with Christ. Please gather with us for a simple dinner in the Parish Hall on Wednesday evenings at 5:30 to be followed by a pro-

gram at 6:15. We will end the evening with Compline at 7:00. The schedule will be as follows:

Wednesday, Feb 25, 6:15pm: Benedict of Nursia – a bit of History

Wednesday, Mar 4, 6:15 pm: Work, Prayer & Study

Wednesday, Mar 11, 6:15 pm: Stability & Commitment

Wednesday, Mar 18, 6:15 pm: Benedictine Practices of the Episcopal Church

Wednesday, Mar 25, 6:15 pm: Holy Eucharist in Celebration of the Annunciation

You do not need to attend dinner in order to participate in the sessions. However, if you wish to join us for dinner, we

ask that you make reservations for the meals that you will be attending. Reservations are due by noon on the Monday

before the Wednesday evening event you plan to attend. To make your reservation, please call the Parish Office at 275-

1651, email the office at [email protected], or fill out the RSVP slip in your pew and drop it in the offering

plate. To help cover the cost of the meals, we suggest a donation of $5.00 per adult and $2.00 per child, with a house-

hold maximum of $10.00 payable at the door.

A great way to prepare for this class is to pick up a copy of Joan Chittester’s The Rule of Benedict: A spirituality for the 21st Century. Copies are available at St. Andrew ’s for $15.

Lent at St. Andrew’s

Strong Churches, Strong Towns: Building Churches and Communities on the Same Foundation Living in community means living as a neighbor to all around us, whether we are thinking of our block, our neighborhood, our city or even the world beyond. Jesus was quite clear on how we should regard our neighbor: with love, with compassion, and with a willingness to see the image of God in one another. Yet it often seems that commu-nity life, whether in neighborhoods or in the public square, is breaking down in today’s world. The church has an important role to play in healing our community, but it may take a new perspective from all of us. As people of faith who worship in the heart of a city, could St. Andrew’s have something to offer in creating a city of neighbors, a city in which all can live as children of God? On Sunday mornings in Lent, please join BJ Owens after the chapel at 9am for conversation on how our cities and our churches can find strength and resiliency together.
