SUNDAY 16 DECEMBER 2018
Third Sunday of Advent - Year C
The third Sunday in Advent is
traditionally “Gaudete”
Sunday when we are invited
to rejoice. Why? In the first
reading the people are
urged to rejoice by the
prophet Zephaniah because
“the Lord is in your midst”
and the Lord “will rejoice
over you with gladness”. In
the second reading our
rejoicing is because “the
Lord is near”.
In the gospel, John
announces the good news.
The harvest imagery -
separating wheat from
chaff; storing wheat; burning
chaff is all a prelude to the
coming day of salvation. The
question “What should we
do?” occurs three times in
this Sunday’s gospel. In the
light of God’s goodness
to us, what now should we
do in preparation for
Christmas?
John’s answer is clear and as
relevant to us today as to his
first listeners: share what you
have with the needy and
act with justice.
Parish office opening hours:
Mon, Tue, Wed & Thu
9.30am to 12.30pm
Youth Club: Is now on holiday until Sunday 13 January.
Advent Hour of Prayer: A reminder that St Peter’s church will be open for prayer on the four Sundays of Advent between 3.30pm and
4.30pm. An open invitation is extended to all parishioners in our four parishes (and beyond!) to come and experience quietness amidst the
noise, stillness in the busyness and an escape from the commercial demands of The Centre! Call by St Peter’s even for a few minutes and
take a breath! Bring the children too!
St John’s Hospital Carol Service: Everyone is welcome to the annual carol service in the hospital on Wednesday 19 December at 7.30pm.
Holy Innocents Mass: Will be celebrated by Archbishop Cushley on 28 December, 12 noon, at Gillis Centre. Please join us. Free parking is
available and refreshments will also be served.
Pax Christi: On Saturday 19 January, Bruce Kent will introduce Pax Christi, an international Catholic movement for peace, to our
Archdiocese. The event will take place at Our Lady of Loretto & St Michael, Musselburgh from 10.00am - 1.30pm. Please pick up a leaflet
from the back of the church to find out more details and how to register.

Final Sunday Mass of Advent: Mass next Sunday at 5.30pm will be in candle light.
In Loving Memory: Many of us find this time of the year difficult. The cold and darkness make the loss of
someone we have loved more poignant. So, as last year, all are invited - if you wish - to hang a decoration on
the tree which will be in the Altar area on the 4th Sunday of Advent, in memory of someone. Maybe you could
add a tag to your decoration with the name of the person being remembered.
Knit & Natter Group: Is now finished for the Christmas holidays. We will resume again in January. We would
like to wish everyone a happy and peaceful Christmas and a blessed New Year.
