SUNDAY 4 NOVEMBER 2018

31st Sunday of the Year - Year B

In this Sunday’s gospel a

scribe approaches Jesus

with yet another

question, one about

which of the 613 Jewish

precepts is the greatest.

So important is this

discussion between

Jesus and the scribe that

it appears in all three

synoptic gospels and is

proclaimed in all three

liturgical years.

Mark’s version has two distinctive features. He begins his quotation with the

Shema, “Hear O Israel! The Lord is our God” This is given in today’s first

reading and is a reminder of the faithful covenant that exists between God

and God’s people.

Secondly, the scribe observes that keeping these commandments far

surpasses the offering of sacrifice. We are called to give of ourselves in love in

our relationships with God and with each other.

Jesus has now reached Jerusalem and his public ministry is nearing a close.

Soon this gospel will reach its climax - Jesus’ self giving love on the cross.

Money Counting: There was a great response to the request for counters last Sunday. Thank you everyone! We now have enough

people to form two more teams which will make this ministry even easier for everyone. If you are able to stay behind after Mass today to

start to see what’s involved that would be good.

Baptism: Please pray for Oliver Morrow who will be baptised today.

St John Ogilvie PFA: Will meet on Monday 5 November at 7.00pm in the school. All parents/grandparents/carers are welcome to attend.

Legion of Mary Mass for Deceased: Will be held on Tuesday 6 November at 6.00pm. Legion prayers will be said at 5.45pm followed by

love to hear from you. Please see a member of the group after Mass to find out more.

Exposition: As from the first Sunday of Advent, we’re going to change the way we do Exposition. So - in the first instance pre-Sunday

Mass Exposition will cease. Technically, Exposition should be a ‘continuation’ of Mass (as happens on a Saturday morning during

Confession time) or part of a completely separate Liturgy. But - also from the first Sunday of Advent, the church building will be open

between 3.30pm - 4.30pm for people to come and pray, as part of the run-up to Christmas. There will be Exposition and Benediction

during this hour.

Celebrating 100 Years of Poland Regaining Independence: 1918 - 11 NOVEMBER - 2018 11 November marks a very important day in Poland's history. The turbulent, yet grand history of the homeland of Poles - the most populous ethnic minority group in the UK - goes back more than 1,050 years. It was way back in 1795, during the third partition of the Kingdom of Poland that the country effectively ceased to exist, split between three regional powers of the day: Russia, Prussia and Austria. And so it was to remain until 1918. What would happen over the next 123 years? Never abandoning the idea of regaining independence, Poles engaged in an armed resistance and kept fighting to free the country. Despite a ban on the Polish language, the nation preserved its identity and continued to exist as a spiritual and cultural community. Poland, though, had to wait until the end World War I for the opportunity to free itself. Following the horrors of World War I, all the major powers controlling Poland were severely weakened. Polish troops, legionnaires and young people in various organisations took advantage of this situation, mobilised and regained military and civil control of Poland in the days prior, and on 10 November 1918, Józef Piłsudski arrived in Warsaw - freshly released from German incarceration - where he was declared Commander-in-chief of the Polish forces. With the help of the President of the United States the country's position in the negotiations that lead to the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, stated the need for an independent Poland. It read: 'An independent Polish state should be erected which should include the territories inhabited by indisputably Polish populations, which should be assured a free and secure access to the sea, and whose political and economic independence and territorial integrity should be guaranteed by international covenant.' Independence (1918-1939) brought with it a period of dynamic economic growth, educational and military development, and unification of three different systems of governance. Poland successfully defended its borders, claiming a historic victory over Soviet Russia in the Battle of Warsaw (1920), which was decisive in halting the spread of communist revolution to the West. Unfortunately, these two decades of freedom ended with World War II, of which Poland became the first and the biggest victim. On 1 September 1939, Germany invaded Poland, starting the deadliest armed conflict in history, followed on 17 September 1939 by the Soviet Union attack of our country from the east. Despite the Polish army heroically fighting, the war brought heavy casualties: six million Polish citizens, including three million Polish Jews, died, many towns and cities were destroyed. After the war Poland fell under Soviet communist rule for 45 years (1944-1989). Yet again, the yearning for freedom saw our compatriots oppose the occupier, with numerous protests taking place. In 1978 the election of Karol Wojtyła as Pope John Paul II brought about hope for the nation, while in 1980 the emergence of Solidarity – the first independent trade union in Eastern Europe – sparked a chain of events that led to the fall of the Polish People’s Republic and the creation of a sovereign, democratic Polish state in 1989. Modern Poland, then, has only really enjoyed independence for just less than 30 years. Even so, since 1989 we have undergone serious structural changes which have given us free, democratic parliamentary and presidential elections, a new constitution and economic prosperity. We enjoy memberships of NATO and the EU, and the chance to be leaders in industries including digitisation, astronomy, food production, business outsourcing. See: www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1F1c3osIDg In Livingston we will celebrate Poland's Independence on Saturday 10 November with our Polish Night in the Lanthorn! After the Polish Mass on Sunday 11 November at 10.30am approx, there will be a Concert of Patriotic Polish Songs - all are welcome to join us in St Andrew's after our mass. Few links about Poland and our history will be available at the parish website. Happy 100 Birthday, Poland!

WIADOMOŚCI POLSKIEJ WSPÓLNOTY W LIVINSTON

1918-2018; Motywy przesłanie Listu Pasterskiego do Polonii wyjaśnia bp Lechowicz. W liście jest zachęta, by w dalszym ciągu dawać świadectwo wiary! Jest jeszcze jeden powód napisania listu – przeświadczenie, że wszyscy katolicy rodem znad Wisły, niezależnie od miejsca przebywania, stanowią tę samą rodzinę. Złączeni więzami wiary, tego samego języka, kultury i historii. Tym znakiem jest ten list. Przesłanie listu można streścić: bądźcie wierni Bogu we wspólnocie Kościoła.
