REMEMBER THAT NOVEMBER IS THE MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY! THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT Advent is NOT Christmas; it is its own discrete and sacred season. It is incumbent upon us, there-fore, to keep it that way. It has a purpose and function that are different from every other season, namely, to prepare us for the Coming Messiah. Consequently, over the centuries it has developed its own wonderful traditions and customs, which are all consistent with that purpose. The Lord is not yet come, so we must make ourselves ready. Foremost, this is done through penance. It’s time to sweep our houses clean in preparation to re-ceive so great and welcome a Guest as the Savior of the World. There will be plenty of extra times for Confession throughout the season, starting this week. Every Tuesday I will hear Confessions from 1:30 until 2:00PM. Other dates and times will be posted as they come up. Another beautiful, custom-ary and traditional Advent observance is… …ADVENT VESPERS Vespers are the official, liturgical evening prayers of the Catholic Church. They’re celebrated every day by all priests and those who are in consecrated life, but with greater solemnity and in grand style in the monasteries and cloistered convents. We will celebrate them here in the same grand style and with all due solemnity on Advent’s four Sundays. We started that custom last year and it was very well re-ceived. It’s something for the whole family, its sights, sounds and smells appealing to both young and old. Each evening, we gather in the darkness of a world saturated with sin, devoid of grace, and need-ful of a Redeemer. But we know that the Promised Redeemer will come, and so we light our candles as we chant the words of the prophets who foretold His Coming. With the candles ablaze and God’s house illuminated with their glow, the solemn praise of God commences, culminating with the great Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. It starts at 7:00PM and lasts about half an hour. Plan on being there for all four, and try to bring the kids and grandkids; experience shows that this is one of the things that will become one of their most cherished memories of their childhood! FAREWELL TO THE FLOWERS OF SPRING The flowers that bloom in the spring (tra la!) have been blooming in our gardens through summer and fall, too, thanks to the loving care of the St. Angela Merici Horticultural Department. But now, alas, the cold of winter draws nigh and the flowers are laid to rest in their beds. We and they both an-ticipate their glorious rebirth around Easter and an even greater blossoming forth of foliage and flora. Again, our warmest and most sincere thanks to our parishioners who, by their skill and devotion, have made God’s a house a place of great beauty and witnessed to the whole community the faith of the Catholics of North County in general and of St. Angela Merici Parish in particular! BEYOND SUNDAY This campaign is now pretty much over. There will be no further salutations, presentations, or ex-hortations; only the emancipations of dollar bills from your bank account as you make good on your pledges! (But there are still pledge cards available for any who have not gotten one.) Many thanks to all who took part! God bless you for your kindness!

This is the time to celebrate “Thankfulness.” Our school community has a litany of thanks!!

For Jesus who loved us so much, He died for us! We thank you, Lord! For Jesus, who taught us how to love our neigh-bors! We thank you, Lord! For our parents. We thank you, Lord! For our friends. We thank you, Lord! For our teachers. We thank you, Lord! For Monsignor Mitas. We thank you, Lord! For our parish who supports our great school. We thank you, Lord!

There are many other gifts that God has given us! One of the benefits we purchased with prof-its from last year's auction are our 25 ipads. Many of our students communicate some of their assignments through Google Classroom on these ipads. The teacher puts an assign-ment on Google Classroom and the students re-spond. This definitely saves paper. The students can respond on any computer.

The temperatures are definitely warmer for this time of year. We are celebrating! It is great to be outside and to enjoy this beautiful weath-er. There is nothing better than enjoying the laughter of children. Our students play well to-gether -- of course they are students of the life of Christ and how we should treat others in our words and actions! God is Good!

Features: Our S.A.M. Legion of Mary’s Travelling Madonna, is looking for a home to visit!

The Legion of Mary's Travelling Madonna is looking for good Catholic homes to visit. Her pres-ence in your home, along with intercessory prayers to her, will enrich your family's lives. Her son cannot deny His mother any request. If you would like to have her come and stay with you, please contact Jane-741-9359, Joan–839-0694, or, Mary–831-7537. We will then bring the Madonna to your home and pick her up. She usually stays for 2 weeks, depending on requests for her. Thanks.

Also…. Are you interested in spending an hour with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament on Tuesdays, between 8:30am – 7:00pm? Our need is great, as, we've lost quite a few due to health issues. If so, please contact Jane, Joan, or, Mary to request a specific hour. Words cannot describe the benefits de-rived from spending an hour with Jesus.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus Council 11778 need YOU!

Each month, we proudly and lovingly support the seminarian from our parish, Matthew Dobbs, with an assortment of baked goods and other treats, in order to show how much we appreciate and love him for pursuing God's call. As such, and because we are only five strong, we are asking for the la-dies of the parish to participate with us in showering Matthew with continued support, especially this Christmas.

We are asking for donations of prepackaged food items (cookies, etc.) and gift cards for our parish seminarian. We ask that the food packages be placed in the two blue buckets in the vestibule and the gift cards placed in envelopes, marked Adopt a Seminarian, and these to be placed in the weekly col-lection baskets- PLEASE include your name so that we know who to thank! (Anonymous gifts will also be appreciated, if you prefer.) We also ask that the gifts cards be purchased after Mass, so that our parish school benefits from the purchase.

Thank you for you generosity. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Agnes Bullock at 716-3204 or [email protected]

Cathedral Basilica Day of Recollection…

Retreats provide the soul with renewed graces, certainly needed in today’s world, to keep us faith-ful and striving for sanctity. This year, treat yourself to a day away from the hustle and bustle and prepare for the God who waits for you. Join Archbishop Robert Carlson and the clergy and parish-ioners of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis for an Advent Day of Recollection on Saturday, Decem-ber 3, 2016.

The day begins at 10:00 a.m., and includes two spiritual conferences led by Archbishop Carlson. Each conference will be followed by exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and an opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The day will end with evening vespers at 4:30 p.m. and the celebration of Mass at 5:00 p.m. All conferences and prayer will be held in the Cathedral Basilica, with a hot lunch provided for all in Boland Hall. NEW THIS YEAR: Cathedral parishioners will host a Craft Fair during the lunch, with all proceeds benefitting the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

This special gathering is free to all (good will offerings to help offset the cost of lunch will be gratefully accepted). Though a free event, organizers request advance registration to properly pre-pare worship materials and set up for lunch. To register or for additional information, please contact Mary Ann Fox at 314-373-8208.
