Parents and teachers are both vital and critical to the wellbeing and development of our children and we must always work together to make the most of children’s learning and to nurture their talents. This is especially refreshing given that the workload of a teacher is often criticised by the media and perceptions of a ‘9 to 3’ day are still present. In comparison, our teachers spend the ‘9 to 3’ part of the day with the children, facilitating their learning. Countless hours aside from this time are then spent each day correcting and assessing the student’s work (this term in particular has seen teachers meeting to analyse children’s work samples, results and assessments against criteria linked to our syllabus to ensure a correct A-E achievement level) planning lessons, preparing resources, meeting with support teachers to discuss children’s needs, professional development to continually improve the quality of their teaching, regular meetings with parents to discuss children’s progress, staff meetings, presenting inservice/information evenings to parents, organising excursion opportunities, carnivals and many, many more while, at the same time, juggling their own family lives and finding time for reflection and self renewal. Theme for the Week: “Keeping Our Children Safe”

At St Angela’s, in the last week and the first week of each term,

each class takes time to discuss the protective behaviour themes of:

“Nothing is so awful that you can’t tell someone about it” …. So that children feel comfortable at all times to approach

people in their network.

This is an opportune time to talk to your children about being safe

Religious Education

Sunday, 8 Jul 2018: Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B Gospel Mk 6:1-6 No prophet gains honour in his native place. This Sunday’s gospel sees Jesus returning to his home town of Nazareth. He is well and truly into his public ministry at this point in the gospel and his reputation is obviously growing as a healer and teacher. When he goes to Nazareth the locals are quick to ‘put him in his place’. They remember the boy, the teenager, the young man apprenticed to his father’s craft. He’s a nobody as far as they are concerned; just young Jesus who grew up here. It is much the same within families and local communities today. No matter how successful and authoritative a young woman or man may have become, a trip home will quickly remind them that in the eyes of those they grew up with nothing has changed. In the gospel passage they even say, that’s Jesus - he’s just James’ brother; no one special! What could he possibly tell them? They try to force Jesus back into the mould of the person with whom they were previously familiar and comfortable. We do this to one another all the time. We have certain expectations about the way a friend normally acts or thinks and when they behave differently we react in a way that lets them know that they are not ‘being themselves’. In doing this, we are looking to maintain our own comfort zone. We take away the freedom of the other person to grow and change. Surely, if we want the best for those we love and care for, we want them to be constantly growing and becoming all that they can be? Q. Have you experienced an unlikely or unexpected encounter with the presence of God? Q. Why do some people find change and growth threatening?

*************************************

Year 5 have been working extremely hard on their Religion, Project Based Learning (PBL) Task this term. The students were given the following driving question: How can we as evangelists continue the work of the disciples, Peter and Paul, by creating a prayer experience that empowers believers to live as Jesus taught and to become more like him? The liturgies, as a culmination of this PBL, will be celebrated with their ‘buddy’ classes on Friday at 11am.

************************************* In 2016 I had the privilege of attending World Youth Day as a group leader. This experience included a mission encounter in the Philippines. Mrs Lean and I were privileged to work with the teachers and students at Baclayon Elementary school. I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to return during these school holidays. I will once again visit, teach and be immersed in the culture of the community. I will take with me the very generous donations that were collected at the end of the last school year. Many families donated picture books, pencils, pencil cases and various school supplies, both pre loved and new. A very big thank you to Mrs Antonella Tesoriero who has worked tirelessly with a group of students during their lunch times, to sort and pack these donations for the trip. I look forward to presenting them on your behalf. Mrs Michelle Yager Religious Education Coordinator

Please keep in your prayers

Our prayers are extended to the Williams family (Mrs Kim Williams - Teachers’ Aide) due to the passing into

eternal life of Mrs Williams’ mother.

Book Hunting Over The Holidays! Do you have any of our readers or library books at home? During

the course of each and every term, books/readers etc. are sent

home with children from the class, the library and from our

Learning Support Team. Although these are recorded,

unfortunately some are never returned. Before contacting the

relevant parents directly, we would kindly ask that you have a

thorough search at home, in toy boxes, on shelves, under the bed

etc., so that these books can be returned and circulated to other

children. All St Angela’s books are stamped with our school

stamp and/or have library bar codes on them.

Term Dates for 2018 Term 3 Monday 23rd July to Friday 28th September

Term 4 Monday 15th October to Wednesday 19th

December (Thursday 20th and Friday 21st

December are Staff Development Days)

School Fees A kindly reminder that the Catholic Education Office has

recently issued reminder letters to families to finalise their

accounts. If you are experiencing difficulty with payment of

school fees, if your account is outstanding and you require an

extension to pay or wish to discuss payment options, please

Internet/Facebook/Text Messaging

As a parent you have a responsibility to monitor your child’s use of

technology at home, in particular, over the holidays. As a school we

speak regularly to our older grades about appropriate technology use.

If this technology is being used inappropriately by your child or others

then action needs to be taken. Suggestions include:

- Viewing your child’s text messages (both inbox &

outbox)

- Viewing internet history

- Viewing emails sent and received

- Encouraging your child to block any children on social media if

needed

- Setting up rules of usage and following through with restricted or no

mobile phone, internet usage etc. for a period of time

- Monitoring games they play against others on the internet,

particularly those that are age specified. Please let us know if we can help you in this important area.

Save the Date Senior Constable Rob Paterson is back. He will be visiting St

Angela’s on Monday 3rd September. He will work with Years

4, 5 and 6 during the day and present to parents at 7:00pm.

Don’t miss it!

Years 5 and 6 Author Visit - Tristan Bancks On Tuesday 3rd July, Years 5 and 6 had a special visit from Tristan Bancks. Tristan Bancks is a children’s and teen author with a background in acting (Home & Away) and filmmaking. His books include the My Life series, Mac Slater (Australia and US) and Two Wolves (On the Run in the US), a crime-mystery novel for middle-graders. Two Wolves won Honour Book in the 2015 Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Awards and was shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards. It also won the YABBA and KOALA Children’s Choice Awards. Tristan’s new books are My Life & Other Weaponised Muffins (February 2017), a fifth book of weird-funny-gross, semi-autobiographical short stories and The Fall (May 2017), a new thriller novel for ages 10+. Tristan is a writer-ambassador for world-changing literacy charity Room to Read. He is excited by the future of storytelling and inspiring others to create. You can connect with him, learn more about his books, play games, watch videos and help him try to change the world at www.tristanbancks.com It was a very interactive and entertaining talk which included the writing process as well as some of his funny childhood experiences which have been the inspiration for many of his stories. The following are some of the children’s thoughts: “I thought the author was creative, funny & inspiring.”

Jessica Herbas 6G “He is funny and interesting. I liked that he let us share our crazy times we have had with our siblings.”

Alexandra Gerrettson-Cornell 6G “I recommend the Two Wolves because it leaves you thinking to the end. You always want to know what happens next.”

Blake Cassettari and Jason Fahmy 5G “He was really funny and I liked his childhood stories.”

Arielle Henwood 5G “He was engaging and exciting. His books sound really intriguing and I want to read them.”

Dance Fever at St Angela’s Dance Fever is once again on in Term 3! Every Monday in Term 3, the talented staff from Dance Fever will be at St Angela’s to teach K-6 a variety of structured dances. There will also be a whole school Hip Hop routine to learn. At the end of the term, children will have the opportunity to take part in a ‘Challenge’ dance-off night at Homebush along with many other schools. Although all children will dance throughout the term, taking part in the night at Homebush is purely optional. The cost of this program has already been included in your school fee account.
