When Jesus gave us The Beatitudes, He gave us not a set of rules but a way of life. Jesus didn’t set the boundary within which his disciples would be contained, but offered them a gate through which any one could reach God. Mary, our Mother, when she met her cousin Elizabeth said: “My soul magnifies the lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. He has looked upon His servant in her lowliness...” (Lk 1:46-48a)

The opening lines in this prayer teaches us that poverty of spirit is when we allow the Word of God to take control of us, rather than allowing our will to dominate God’s will. The words “..Servant in her lowliness” does not imply that our Blessed Mother had a poor self image, rather it shows us that our Blessed Mother was filled with meekness and humility. The concluding line of Luke 1:48b states:

“…hence forth all generations will call me Blessed”

This line can fool us into thinking that our Blessed Mother was proud. If someone in our family one day says that from now on I will be boss, our reaction will be to totally ignore what the person said or to ask them if they feel unwell. Elizabeth herself called Mary Blessed, and truly all generations will call her blessed as we recall the true act of salvation that followed.

“…..You are most blessed among women………Blessed are you who believed that the Lord’s word would come true” (Luke 1:42-47)

Mary responded to Elizabeth in true meekness. She surely has the earth for her heritage!Mary our mother invites us to accept our everyday journey in faith and like her say “let it be done to me according to your will”.

At the wedding in Cana, Galilee, (Refer John 2:1-10) Mary noticed that the feast was running out of wine. She was able to mourn with the family rather than give advice and suggestions or criticize the planning. Mary carried the difficult moment to God in prayer. She mentioned to God, “they have run out of wine”. She is not discouraged or frustrated at God’s answer. “What has that to do with me, my hour has not yet come”. Mary in fact tells the servants “do whatever He tells you” rather than keep quiet, and the result is they all continued to smile and remain cheerful. Our lady invites us to feel the pain of others.

When Jesus was missing on the return journey after the visit to the temple, (Refer Luke 2:41-52) Mary went back in search of him. The Lord calls us to hunger and thirst to do what is right. Mary went back, and even though the Lord told her that He was doing his Father’s business, Mary insisted that he comes back. Jesus was obedient and grew in wisdom. Mary invites us to do what is right. Do we follow the regular path in bringing up our children or do we hunger and thirst in front of the Lord to do the right thing for them.

Mary truly walked the journey of life living The Beatitudes. She was gentle, merciful, pure in heart and brought peace in the world. She also invites us to walk the Beatitude way of life. Mary our Mother brought Jesus not just into the world but into our lives. She invites us to keep Jesus within us and take Him to others by truly living The Beatitudes.

STRENGTHENED WITH MARY OUR MOTHER TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS

The Nativity Novena of the Blessed Virgin Mary was conducted by Good News Club (GNC) along with the Confirmation & Pre-Baptism Catechists of our Parish. The Students of the GNC played an important role through their active participation in the Novena. The theme for the Nativity Novena was “Strengthened with Mary Our Mother to make the Right Decisions”. The Novena liturgy was very meaningful and

enriching. It helped us to reflect and contemplate on the Beatitudes. It challenged us to prove ourselves as authentic disciples of Christ by practising every aspect of the Beatitudes wholeheartedly.

Our day-to-day life prompts us to make various choices. Usually, they are only small ones. However, at certain points in our life, we are faced with important decisions, which can be life changing and morally challenging as well. The choices we make can create a deep impact on our spiritual life. This is what sets a true Catholic apart from the rest. We must remember that we should not make a choice merely to meet our physical and worldly needs, or to satisfy our humanness. On the contrary, our choices must be made by looking far ahead into the future, as far as our next life, which is eternity. For what is good? To live a life based on the Beatitudes and inherit eternal life? Or To live a convenient life of evil values and let our soul suffer in darkness and fire for all eternity? The choice is yours and mine. -- Karen D’Abreo

Pope Francis Tweets..

Faith is life: It is living in the love of God who has changed our lives. Faith has to do with encounter, not theory.

GNC PSALM RECITATION & GOSPEL SINGING

The Good News Club organised Psalm Recitation and Gospel Singing Programme on September 30, 2018. The Programme began by invoking God’s presence for the day. The students of all grades of the GNC recited various psalms and ended with a hymn.

In order to be familiar with the history of the parish, there was a short video presentation on the history of St. Anne Church. This helped the children to understand the milestone of the parish. Furthermore, Fr. Colman Carlos spoke about the importance of Psalm recitation, which is a good form of Elocution. He appreciated the children for their dynamic performance and active participation in the Sunday school. He also catechized the children to grow in the love of Christ and not merely treating the Eucharist as a ritual. He also thanked all the GNC teachers for their time, effort and trouble they take to impart God’s word to the children. The Psalm Recitation and Gospel Singing programme concluded with the distribution of delicious snacks to all present, who made their time and waited till the end. God Bless! ~ Evelynn D’sa

Two things will define one’s life. ‘Your determination when you have nothing and your attitude when you have everything.’ This is predominantly seen in the life of Mother Mary. What makes her magnificent or an exemplary woman? The simple life she led and the virtues she practiced in her life make her magnificent and exemplary of all times. In our present times, there are a lot of accusations and arguments regarding Catholics venerating Mary. On the contrary, we find people of other faiths flocking towards this woman with massive faith. Mary became the mother of God by being humble and faithful towards His call. By her faithful acceptance of the incarnation of Jesus Christ, she played a vital role in the divine plan of restoration of humanity.

The virtues found in her life describe her love for God and Humanity. Being Humble and Faithful was (and is) the adorable essence of her life. At the time of incarnation and at the foot of the cross, Mary accepted the plan of God with great faith. Mary was struck by sorrows, pain, and sufferings in her life. All these painful moments made her humble and faithful to God. Her life reflects the virtues every Christian must hold close to his/her heart. “Humility is the foundation and guardian of virtues, for without it no other virtue can exist in a soul,” says St. Bernard. After Christ, there is no one so humble except Mother Mary. Being the Mother of Jesus Christ, pride was never at her side. The greatest honor for a woman is her ‘virginity’ and Mary chose to forsake this greatness to be the humble servant of God. Her treacherous life as a child and as the mother of Jesus Christ made her even more humble. She readily went to meet and nursed Elizabeth in her maternity. She showed her care for others at the wedding feast of Cana and faithfully accepted the suffering and death of her only son reflecting her humility of nothingness in front of God. Mary all throughout her life exhibited great amount of

faithfulness. She was faithful to the mission and plan of God. Having understood the seriousness of her acceptance to become the mother of Jesus Christ, she completely surrendered herself to His plan. Her virginity is questioned and argued by various intellectual scholars, but the faith of the Catholic Church teaches us how Mary was faithful to the plan of God and remained a virgin till the end of her life. The secret power within her to be the humble and faithful servant of God is that she considered Love for God more than self. She emptied herself completely in order to be filled by the grace of God. Therefore Mary predominantly embraces humility and faithfulness as the most important virtue of Christian life.

What does our Christian life reflect? As Catholics, what are our virtues? Today, some of the virtues we hold important are prestige, wealth, honor, power, a lavish life style, selfishness, unhealthy competition, instant pleasure and gratification etc., Do we reflect the virtues of humility and faithfulness in our Christian life? The importance of Christ and His teaching are largely denied and neglected in order to achieve our place in high society. Instead, being rich, being in power and position should help us to practice humility and faithfulness towards one other. The pilgrimages, devotions to Mother Mary and saints, the offerings, services etc., should help us to practice the virtues of Christian life and not try to please God through our external acts. To adapt and practice the virtues of Christian life, one should be deeply rooted in prayer and have great love of God and His people which is significantly seen in the life of our Blessed Mother Mary. ~ Bro. Derrick Barnabas St. Pius X Seminary

Mary, The Humble and Faithful Servant of God

The Ladies Sodality of our parish organised the Assumption Novena from 6th August to 14th August, 2018. The Novena theme was ‘MARY OUR MODEL FOR HOLINESS’ based on eight beatitudes. On each day of the Novena, we focussed on a different beatitude and the role it played in Mary’s life and how it could be applied to our own lives.

Pope Francis says that the Beatitudes are like a ‘Christian’s Identity Card’. We can practise them if we call on the Holy Spirit to fill us with His power and free us from our shortcomings and weaknesses. The Feast Mass was celebrated on 15th August 2018 at

9.15 am by our spiritual director, Fr Colman Carlos. In his homily, Fr. Colman stressed on the fact that Mary lived the Beatitudes and urged us to learn from her to be true witnesses to The Gospel of Christ, else ‘HOLINESS’ remains just an empty word.

The Laying down of Office by the old Council Members and Installation of new Council Members took place during the Mass. The Feast Mass was followed by a get-together in the Kiddies Corner where all the Sodalists took part in the various games, enjoyed tasty snacks and festive lunch. ~ Maria D’Mello

We have heard that St. Francis of Assisi loved animals and used to talk to them. But, here is another Saint who loved animals and not only spoke to them but also allotted them their own special duties. St. Colman did not own an alarm clock but he did manage to wake up every morning at the appointed time due to his faithful pet rooster, who

would begin his song at the break of dawn and continue until St. Colman came out of his room. For his night prayers, St. Colman had another pet to wake him up. Any guesses as to what the pet was? He trained a mouse to wake him up at nights.

One night St. Colman was exhausted after a long day of preaching and travelling on foot and was fast asleep. When he did not wake up at the usual hour of midnight for Lauds, the mouse climbed on the pillow, and kept rubbing its tiny head against St. Colman’s ear. St. Colman, who was exhausted, kept shaking him off impatiently. The mouse however did not give up and making one last effort, gently nibbled on the saint’s ear. At this, St. Colman immediately arose – laughing in disbelief that the mouse had understood its job. Thereafter, St. Colman always waited for the mouse to rub his ear before arising, whether he was awake or not. The mouse never failed him.

St. Colman had another strange pet: a fly. The fly always attended on him when he was reading. It had the sense to walk along the lines of the book; especially when the Saint was tired and wanted to rest his eyes, the fly would sit on the first letter of the next sentence, and by that means direct him where he was to begin.

Apart from his encounters with animals, St. Colman is also well known in Ireland, where he is likened to the Christ child fleeing from Herod, as his own father had given orders to kill Queen Rhinagh, his wife, when she was pregnant as he had been foretold that his son would surpass him in greatness. Rhinagh fled away from her husband to the forest and after giving birth, took her newborn to a priest to be baptised, but they realised there was no water. Fearing to return home, the mother sheltered under an ash tree and prayed. A fountain bubbled up from the earth and St. Colman was baptised. That fountain is now the miraculous well of St. Colman Mac Duagh.

Queen Rhinagh entrusted her child to the care of monks who brought him up. St. Colman initially led the life of a recluse, living in prayer and prolonged fasting, first in Inishmore, and then in a cave at the Burren in County Clare. With his relative, King Guaire Aidne Mac Colmáin of Connacht, he founded the monastery of Kilmacduagh, and governed it as Abbot-Bishop. In addition to this, many miracles are attributed to St. Colman – both during his lifetime and after his death. His Feast is celebrated on 29th October. St. Colman pray for us. - Felicity Rodrigues

Our Parish has a group of enthusiastic people who actively participate in the daily and weekend services. They are the “Proclaimers” commonly known as Lectors. They rehearse the Biblical passages with dedication, then work at proclaiming the readings during the Mass, so as to touch the hearts and minds of the congregation more deeply. Some of the Lectors have volunteered to join the group, others on request. Yet, they look upon their responsibility as a “Call” from God. They fulfill their responsibilities with earnestness, devotion and immense joy in bringing the Good News to God’s people. The Proclaimers meet periodically as a group to review their progress and to improve in their reading style as an ongoing training and enrichment; along with a commitment to no longer accept mediocrity. Fr.Colman has invested in a book entitled ‘READ THE WAY YOU TALK’ by Jack Hartjes (Ph. D), who is a lector and an instructor of Lectors at St. Paul’s Parish, St. Cloud, Minnesota. The book illustrates ways to make your reading style interesting and more receptive to the congregation.

CERTAIN GUIDELINES/INSTRUCTIONS TO BE FOLLOWED BY THE LECTORS

PREPARATION BEFORE MASS:• To be present in the Sacristy 10 minutes before Mass and practice the scripture reading. • As a Lector/Proclaimer, occupy the pew reserved for lectors in the Pali south-side extensionWhen at the Altar it is only fitting that we observe a certain Decorum.

• Lectors to be dressed modestly - No sleeveless, off-shoulder, low-neck or transparent blouses or short skirts, shorts or track pants

DURING THE READING:• You should bow to the Altar (not the Tabernacle) before and after the Reading. • Adjust the microphone, so that, it points just above or below your mouth to avoid ‘blows’ when reading. • If you have a natural loud voice, adjust your distance from the mike. • Do not say First Reading… also, do not read the so called “theme line”, nor should you indicate the chapter/verse.• At the end of the reading, pause for a while ---- then say – The Word of the Lord. • To elicit a response from the congregation raise your hand as a signal. • Invite the people to stand for the gospel. i.e say ‘Please stand for the Gospel. • And always remember the 4 P’s-----Pray, Prepare, Practice and PROCLAIM.

Dear fellow parishioners, if you feel the CALL to be a Proclaimer of the Good News, do not hesitate------ you will be most welcomed. As Jesus said- The harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few. COME - be a part of our Ministry!

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” (Matthew 13:44).The Beatitudes is the pathway paved by Jesus. The word “beatitude” comes from Latin beatitudo, meaning “blessedness. Mary was greeted by Elizabeth with the words “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb” (Luke 1:42). No one can surpass Mary in living the beatitudes. Our Founder, Blessed Francisco Palau regards Mary as the archetype in the Church and with the Church. She is the sovereign Queen who triumphed by crushing the head of Satan. Mary’s celestial crown is the reward gained by living a virtuous life on earth, not a single virtue is missing in her crown, and she has them all in her fullness: Ave Gratia Plena, Yes full of grace, full of virtues. Mary is

not only the perfect type and figure of the Church but

also the most powerful mediatrix who links the Church with Jesus. The one who confides and intercedes to Mary will indubitably unearth the treasure. She is the most skilled, audacious and agile mentor who enables us to walk the narrow path, persevere in treading it and acquire the most priceless and magnificent treasure JESUS.

Let us opt to walk this adventurous path with Mary and acquire the treasure. Acquisition of this treasure will fill us with hope, peace and joy - the vital need of our generation. With Jesus and Mary besides us we will experience a paradigm shift in our lives. A shift from: Selfishness to Selflessness, Emptiness to Fulfillment, Worldliness to Godliness. The choice is ours.

The St. Andrew’s All Bandra Parish Talent Contest Zonals is an annual competition held between the four zones of Bandra. It starts in the month of August and culminates only by the first week of September. The Zonals brings great excitement and energy as there are several intriguing competitions like poster-making, singing, dancing, instrumental, elocution, choirs and dramatics, over the course of weekends, testing the passion and skill of the astonishing participants as well as the strength of the zone.

We are grateful to the Priests, parents and mentors for their constant encouragement and support, undoubtedly they are the wind beneath the wings to their contestants! Thanks to the consistent commitment and effort shown by the participants, North West won the overall championship among all four zones of Bandra and seven more trophies in the categories of best performer below and above 16 years, duets above 14 years, best quartet, best choir, most musical zone and highest number of winners.

We visited the House of Charity, Versova on 12th August, 2018 accompanied by our Parish Priest, Fr. Colman Carlos. The purpose of our visit was to share the joy of Christ with the inmates through our interaction and by sharing our love offerings (offered by the parishioners during the St. Anne’s novena). The visit was indeed an eye opener for most of us. It made us realise the great responsibility and challenge of looking after the differently abled, which the religious sisters and volunteers do, with great love, care and affection. Our hats off to them for dedicating their precious time and energy without any kind of expectation of reward. Thanks to our parishioners from various associations,

Sisters of Prithi Kunj and Auxilium Convent and especially our Youth Group. It was indeed an amazing experience for most of us present at the outreach. May our patroness, St. Anne shower her blessings on the parishioners.

I once made a remark about the hidden books of the Bible. It was a lulu. Kept people looking so hard for facts and for others it was a revelation. Some were in a jam, especially since the names of the books were not capitalized. But the truth finally struck home to numbers of readers. To others, it was a real job. We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you. Yes, there will be some really easy ones to spot. Others may require judges to help them. I will quickly admit it usually takes a minister to find one of them, and there will be loud lamentations when it is found. One little lady says she brews a cup of tea, so she can concentrate better. See how well you can compete. Relax now for there are really sixteen names of books of the Bible in this story. ~ Fr.Savio

It is that time of the year when most of the people talk about the weather. But at St. Anne’s, it is a different buzz altogether and that is the Feast of our Patroness St. Anne. The Committee headed by our Parish Priest Fr. Colman, assisted by Fr. Savio along with the representatives from all the Small Christian Communities and associations put their heads together, the common goal being to celebrate the Feast with spiritual and devotional grandeur to be followed by the festivities of the Fete on Saturday and a grand Dinner Dance on the Feast day.

One tradition deeply embedded in the devotion in the Church of St. Anne is the Litany to our Patroness sung in Marathi. Each day of the Novena was allotted to and conducted by the Small Christian Communities, Associations and Religious Sisters of our Parish. The Theme for the Novena ‘Holiness through the Beatitudes’ was based on the Apostolic exhortation GAUDATE ET EXSULTATE (Rejoice and Be Glad) and our guest priests touched upon the same in their inspiring homilies.

The Fete on Saturday had the stalls of all the Small Christian Communities - Sherly, Pal/Am, Malla, Scheme and Rajan selling delicious and mouth watering snacks. The games of skill put up by the Youth Group drew a lot of youngsters trying their luck. Karaoke by our talented parishioners kept the show going with the much awaited Housie, as usual, ending the evening on a high note though it was not ‘goodbye’ or ‘goodnight’ but ‘see you tomorrow’ which echoed in the air.

We had the pleasure of having His Lordship Bishop John Rodrigues as the main celebrant for the feast Mass where hearts symbolising the parents/grandparents/children/spinsters /housebound and those caring for the elders were placed at the foot of the Altar.

The much awaited Gala Dinner Dance got off to a rocking start with fabulous music keeping the crowd on their toes till the end. Another unique feature of the evening was the amazing Power Point Presentation titled “Who is Who of St.Anne?” displaying the dynamic and multitalented people working behind the scenes to make sure that our Parish is vibrant not only spiritually but also attending to the basic needs of our fellow parishioners. The dance floor was packed with the young and elderly all shaking their legs to some golden songs and was by a followed the sumptuous buffet with mouth watering dishes. We the Parishioners of St. Anne’s live the Three Musketeers motto ‘All for One and One for All’ and are proud to belong to St. Anne’s Parish where we live as one big family. ~ Oscar Cardoz
