THE WOMAN

In the Gospels we hear Jesus refer to his mother Mary as "Woman." This reference should draw our attention to both Genesis and Revelation. But who is this "Woman”,

and why is she so central to salvation history? This powerful film presents the Catholic teaching

about Mary and her important role in the life of the Church today. On this Solemnity of the Assumption,

let us ponder Mary's role in our own lives!

THE DESTINY OF ALL MORTAL FLESH The celebration of today’s feast on a Sunday is unusual on our Roman Catholic calendar. Our observance of the Lord’s Day is held in such high esteem that few other feasts replace it. Occasionally there is a feast—usually of one of the saints—in which the saving power of God in Christ is so uniquely focused that the Roman rite deems it worthy of celebration on the Lord’s Day. Today is such a feast. Yet some are surprised at the brevity of the dogma in its entirety: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever

Virgin Mary having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The Roman Catholic Church never defined any specifics or particulars about the event itself. It is not in the scriptures. There are no verifiable eyewitness accounts. At its core, the dogma reveals in Mary the destiny of all mortal flesh, and reinforces our creedal belief in resurrection of the body. This feast strengthens our faith, defined last week in Hebrews as the realization of things hoped for. We find, in Mary, that realization of what we all hope for, what Paul today affirms: “In Christ shall all be brought to life” (1 Corinthians 15:22).

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Updated CDC Mask Recommendations

7/29/2021

The CDC has revised its guidelines regarding when fully vaccinated people should wear a face covering.1 While infections with COVID-19 remain rare in those who have been fully vaccinated, preliminary evidence suggests that those fully vaccinated persons who do become infected with the more contagious Delta variant can also spread the virus to others.

Therefore, the CDC now recommends that fully vaccinated people wear a mask in indoor public places, when in areas that have substantial or high levels of community transmission of COVID. At present, Calaveras, San Joaquin, and Tuolumne counties are at the substantial level, while Stanislaus County is at the high level.2

Further, even in areas with low or moderate transmission, fully vaccinated people may want to wear a mask if they or someone in their household is immunocompromised or at increased risk for severe disease, or if someone in their household is unvaccinated.

California Public Health recommends that fully vaccinated people mask in indoor settings across California, “as an extra precautionary measure for all to reduce the transmission of COVID-19.”3 In light of this new guidance, it is strongly recommended that those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 wear a mask when participating in indoor worship. Those who are not fully vaccinated are still required to wear a mask.

By each doing our part to slow the transmission of COVID in our communities, we work to protect the common good. We continue to encourage everyone who is able to get vaccinated against COVID-19, which remains the best way to hinder the transmission of the virus. Parishes should continue to have masks available for those who desire them, as well as providing hand sanitizer.

Part 3 – Sacramentality The Liturgy “is carried out by means of perceptible signs by which the faith is nourished, strengthened, and expressed.” (GIRM, 20) “In the liturgy the sanctification of persons is signified by signs perceptible to the senses, and is effected in a way which corresponds with each of these signs.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium (SC), 7)

“In the earthly liturgy we take part in a foretaste of that heavenly liturgy which is celebrated in the holy city of Jerusalem toward which we journey as pilgrims, where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God, a minister of the holies and of the true tabernacle…” (SC 8)

God has made human beings as creatures with both a material and spiritual reality- we have a body and a soul. The body, we can say, is a symbol, of the person. As Pope St. John Paul II taught, “…only the body is capable of making visible what is invisible: the spiritual and divine. It has been created to transfer into the visible reality of the world the mystery hidden from eternity in God, and thus to be a sign of it.” (Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology of the Body, 203). Similarly, we believe that God uses the rest of creation as well in revealing spiritual and divine realities. This is the basis of the sacraments, what we call the principle of sacramentality. A basic definition of sacrament is often “a sacred sign, instituted by Christ, to give grace.” Expanding on that definition, some further explain the sign as “a sign which effects what it signifies.” Often we think of the central symbols of the sacraments – water in baptism, bread and wine in the Eucharist, oil at Confirmation. And while these are the most important, in fact the whole of our ritual is sacramental: where it takes place, the art, the music, the words of the prayers, the gestures, posture, who leads the celebration, when it takes place, all of these elements signify and testify to the invisible reality of God’s activity.

Things go wrong when the outward symbolism fails to point to the invisible reality, or distracts from it. An overly casual approach to ritual on the part of the priest, for instance, signifies that what is going on really isn’t all that important, distracting from the fact that this is the most important thing anyone could be doing. Sometimes, however, there can be too much emphasis on the external symbols themselves, such that they call attention to themselves more than to the underlying reality. An example might be a situation where a cantor sings a solo piece during the Mass presented in such a way that people feel inclined to applaud afterwards, as though it were a mere performance rather than worship.

In the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, which is the ‘how-to guide’ for Mass in the Roman Rite, it says that in the celebration of the Eucharist “the greatest care is to be taken that those forms and elements proposed by the Church are chosen and arranged, which, given the circumstances of persons and places, more effectively foster active and full participation and more aptly respond to the spiritual needs of the faithful.” (GIRM, 20). This is why certain adaptations are permitted in the Mass, such as the choice of readings and prayers, the chants (songs), explanations, and so on. However, they are only permitted to a certain degree; otherwise changes risk shaping the external signs into something other than what the Church desires them to be. Thus, the Priest is reminded “that he is the servant of the Sacred Liturgy and that he himself is not permitted, on his own initiative, to add, to remove, or to change anything in the celebration of Mass” (GIRM, 24).

If you ever wonder why so much time and effort go into the translation of the Mass into the vernacular, or why the Church insists on worthy materials and beautiful churches, a large part of the answer is sacramentality!
