Dear Parishioners, The Gospel reading of this Sunday is taken from Jesus’ discourse at the Last Supper and it is dominated by his imminent departure. He tells his disciples that he will not leave

them orphans. He promises to send the Holy Spirit to be with them. Peace is his final gift to them, a peace the world cannot give. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” The Hebrew word for peace is shalom. The English word peace conveys only a fraction of what shalom means. In general shalom conveys a sense of universal completeness, a condition in which nothing is lacking. The state of perfect wellbeing which shalom signifies be-longs only to God. When one possesses true peace, one is in perfect communion with God. Yours Sincerely, Fr. Jose Shaji, Pastor

Mother’s Day is May 8th. Mother’s Day Flower Offerings may be made In Honor Of or In Memory Of your mother. Envelopes may be found in the pews. Print clearly. Please turn in envelopes before 5/2/16, to have her name appear in the Mother’s Day bulletin. Having a special Mass said for your mother, in the future, on a specific date, is a lovely gift to give her for Mother’s Day. Stop by the rectory to pick a date and receive a festive card to send.

THE GIFT OF PEACE We are offered another vision in today’s second reading, a vision of the New Jerusalem, “coming down out of heaven from God” (Revelation 21:10). Read be-tween the lines describing the radiant city, and we find that the greatest beauty revealed is the beauty of perfect symmetry and order, a city founded on the faith of the twelve tribes of Israel and the Twelve Apostles, lit only by the glory of God. The first reading and the Gospel are linked to this idealized description of the New Jerusalem. In both we read of distress and disturbance countered by the gift of peace. “[M]y peace I give to you,” Jesus assures his dis-

ciples at the Last Supper (John 14:27). In keeping with that gift, the apostles and elders, in the reading from Acts, decide not to disturb the peace of new Gentile believers. The undue burden of circumcision will not be imposed on them.

Marriages That Work

Love is in the air, weddings are being planned and even established marriages are being improved this me of year. Pre wedding retreats prepare couples to work together to be er handle communica on; couples are given strategies to tackle bumps in the road of life and they are given sugges ons on how to act as a united front, to remain a constant support for one another. Here are some ps for improving your rela onships. 1. Turn off your cell phone when you are with your spouse. Your partner will not feel important in your life if you constantly turn away, toward others. 2. Immediately answer your phone or quickly reply to a text or email from your spouse. Again, you are making sure they know they are important in your life. 3. Stay connected to your spouse throughout the day. A cute text could be just the right thing to keep him/her smiling. Don’t over due it…..you don’t want to be a pest…. 4. Delete nega ve contacts from your phone, email list or face book friend list. People who are a nega ve influence, who spread nega ve thoughts or maintain an unhealthy lifestyle can weaken your resolve to be the best you can be. Surround yourself with people who will strengthen your character. 5. Constantly be on the look out for resources to improve your rela onships. There are many resources available to help. Some have good advice, some proba-bly not so good. Remember a good rule of thumb is to treat others the way THEY want to be treated, not how you want to be treated. This is not an easy task, because you have to really understand their likes and dislikes. However, when someone reciprocates that philosophy back to you, it is well worth the effort you put in to make them happy too. Sugges ons from some of our married parishioners: “Compromise” ……… married 30 years “It’s not a 50 50 situa on, at least 10% you have to do things you would rather not do” …….married 53 years “Con nual and open communica on”...married 53 yrs. “Show your Love somehow, everyday”...married 26 yrs. “Things will get hard…..if it gets “too hard” a end a Retrouvaille weekend to get you back on track” ...Married 15 years. www.HelpOurMarriage.com Call 800-470-2230
