DECEPTION Indeed, it is not in human nature to deceive others for any long time, without in a measure deceiving ourselves, too.

~John Henry Newman

Did You Know??? Several Foods are Cancer-Fighters

The top Cancer-Fighting foods: 1. Peppers: a great source for Vitamin C, Vitamin A,

folic acid and potassium. 2. Crucifers: found in cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower,

collards, brussel sprouts, mustard greens, radishes, turnips and watercress have powerful phytochemicals.

3. Fruits: Cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries are rich in Vitamin C and folic acid in addition contain phytochemicals as strong antioxidants. Sugar in dried fruits can decrease these benefits.

4. Water (mineral, spring and seltzer) and teas (black and green) are the best beverages to drink. Try to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day as well.

5. Lycopenes: powerful antioxidants are found in tomato-based pasta sauce, tomato paste, ketchup and salsa. Lycopene helps reduce the risk of skin cancer; may help reduce the risk of other types of cancers.

6. Olive Oil is one of the healthiest types of fat. It’s phytochemicals and Vitamin E may help prevent breast and colon cancer.

7. Pumpkin, sweet potatoes and acorn squash provide large quantities of cancer fighting carotenoids, particularly beta-carotene. These foods help protect, prevent cell damage and decreases your risk for cancer. Eating a Mediterranean Diet will give you all these foods. You are what you EAT!

ASKING FOR HELP The Beatitudes praise the poor in spirit. One characteristic of those who are poor in spirit is their ability to ask for help; they know when others can provide what they lack. Today’s readings encourage us to practice poverty in spirit by asking God for what we need. What could be more natural than to ask God for good things? God is, after all, the inventor of goodness and the giver of all good things. Asking God for help puts us in conversation with God. These conversations take many forms. The reading from Genesis shows Abraham bantering with God like a skilled negotiator, while Saint Paul’s letter to the Colossians praises God for answering us even when we don’t deserve it. In Saint Luke’s Gospel, Jesus not only gives us words to use in our conversations with God (the Our Father), but also promises that God always listens to our prayers.

Prayer of St. Ignatius Loyola Dearest Lord,

teach me to be generous; teach me to serve You as You deserve;

to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds,

to toil and not to seek for rest, to labour and not to ask for reward

save that of knowing I am doing Your Will. ~Catholic Online

Eucharistic Adoration To those who have never sat before the Lord with “Open Eyes,” Eucharistic Adoration can seem like a waste of time. And yet to those who have tasted the goodness of the Lord, Adoration has the power to move us closer to Jesus. Think about Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. At the very beg inn ing of the i r conversation, Jesus told her, “If you

knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink.” You would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water” (John 4:10). In a similar manner, Eucharistic Adoration is not about our giving Jesus a drink by giving up our time to be with Him as much as it is about our coming to Jesus and asking Him for a drink. It’s about presenting our needs to the Lord and asking Him to fill us up with heavenly grace and heavenly power and heavenly wisdom. It’s about receiving all that we need to live in Him and for Him in this world. The more we fix our eyes on Jesus, the more we will appreciate how much He goes out of His way to reach us. When we come to meet Him in Adoration, He shows us – just as He showed the Samaritan woman – that He wants to be our Lord, our Savior and our friend. As our eves are opened, we will take His advice and ask Him for a drink of His living water. And we will never be the same again.

~The Word Among Us

PLEASE THANK OUR ADVERTISERS! Our Sunday bulletin is a primary way we use to communicate with you. Through our arrangement with the J.S. Paluch Company, the parish does not pay for the bulletin printing, which saves us thousands of dollars every year. Our bulletin is supported through the generosity of the advertisers - many of whom are our own parish members. Most are members of our local community. Please support our advertisers with your patronage. Tell the business owner that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertising in the bulletin. This is one small way we can work together within our own community. A strong and vibrant parish is good for our community and a strong business community is good for our parish.
