4 TAVISTOCK GAZETTE v WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2014 The Tavistock Minor Ball Association (TMBA) had another very successful season both on and off the diamond in 2014. One of the highlights of the season was the addition of a scoreboard in Queen’s Park generously donated by the Rotary Club of Tavistock. To raise money to offset the costs involved with minor ball, TMBA has increasingly looked to host fastball tournaments like the Cephas Roth Memorial as their primary means of fundraising. The addition of a scoreboard makes Queen’s Park an even better facility to help attract world-class teams to these tournaments. Ken Sommers, from the Rotary Club, worked closely with TMBA to source and select a scoreboard, even taking the time to tour the facilities at OES Scoreboards to look at the design and production of the scoreboard. A model was chosen that logged balls, strikes, outs, and innings as well as a clock that can be converted to a countdown timer for games with time limits. All scoring is controlled via a wireless controller that can be used anywhere around the diamond. The scoreboard, along with the new tractor and diamond groomer, make Queen’s Park one of the best ball diamonds in all of Ontario. On the diamond, TMBA had another incredible season with a number of teams finding success at both the provincial and national levels. The first year Squirt Boys won the WOAA title, the second year Squirt Boys went undefeated all year culminating in OASA Provincial Gold, the Bantam Boys won an ORSA title and Ontario Summer Games Silver, the Peewee Boys won Bronze at the Eastern Canadian Championships, the Midget Boys won OASA Provincial Bronze and were 4th in the Canadian Championships, and the Junior Boys were OASA Provincial Champions. On the girl`s side, the Squirt Girls won PWSA Provincial Silver and the Novice Girls captured PWSA Provincial Bronze. TMBA was also represented at the national umpiring level as Umpire-In-Chief Dennis Roth was invited to work the Canadian Bantam Championships. “The players, parents, and executive want to thank all the individuals and businesses that generously supported our teams this year,” said TMBA President Chris Holdsworth. “Without this support, TMBA would never be able to provide the kids with the equipment and facilities that we have nor would they have the opportunity to travel across Canada to compete at a national level,” he added. “Tavistock Minor Ball is very, very fortunate to be part of this great community,” he concluded. Bradley Ward won Honour Roll award(continued from page 18)

Bradley Ward has been a

Bisons player for nine years

during which times he has

won various awards, but this

is his first provincial award.

The Honour Roll award is

given to an Ontario player

who displays athletic ability

and academic standards that

sets him apart from others in

Ontario.

Mr. Ward has been an On-

tario Honour Student since

Grade 9 and currently has a

94 per cent average in Grade

11 while being a leader on

his football team, winning

five Bisons awards, the top

award in the Bisons program

and an organizational record

for the Bisons.

“This award was totally

unexpected and I was really

surprised to receive it,” he

said. “I have been taught to

work hard both at school

and on the football field so it

is nice to see that hard work

recognized.”
