Pastor’s Pen

Abortion Expansion Act: Lives in the Balance New York State is the Abortion Capital of our nation, with a rate of 29.6 abortions for every 1,000 women of reproductive age. That’s more than twice the national average. New York legalized abortion in 1970, three years before the U.S, Supreme Court ruling Roe vs. Wade. Abortion is legal here for any reason up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, and any time after that if the mother’s life is at risk. So even if Roe were to be overruled, the vast majority of abortions in our state would continue to be legal and available.

The Governor and the Democratic leadership in the New York State Legislature want to go even further, and make abortion less safe and more expansive than it is now. They’ve promised to enact the so-called “Reproductive Health Act” in the next few days. The vote is to be on January 22. This bill would: Allow non-doctors to perform abortions Allow abortions for any reason in the third trimester of pregnancy right up to a mother’s due date. Remove all criminal penalties for abortion, even if it was contrary to the mother’s choice, such as intentional targeting of an un-

born child in an act of violence. Remove our state’s protections for infants accidentally born alive in the course of an abortion. This extremism goes far beyond Roe vs. Wade.

Here’s how to take action now!

Pro-Life New Yorkers need to stand up in unison and make their voices heard on behalf of women and their unborn children. Tell your state lawmakers that enough is enough. Here’s a simple way to do this. Go to the New York State Catholic Conference web-site at www.nyscatholic.org. Click on Stop Abortion Expansion. Enter your home address information, then select “Send Message.” Your message will automatically be sent to your State Senator, State Assembly Representative and the Governor. Please do it as soon as you can. It is so important to register our strong protest at this time. Tragically, the political reality following the 2018 election means that we are unlikely to defeat this measure in the State legislature. Governor Cuomo is a strong proponent of the bill and has promised to sign it into law. If the legislation is indeed enacted into law this year, we must do all we can to ensure that vulnerable women facing unplanned pregnancies do not avail themselves of it.

What more can we do?

Pray. Pray for the intercession of St. Gianna Molla, the patron saint of mothers, physicians and preborn children. Pray for changed minds and a deeper awakening to the sacredness and dignity of human life. Provide life-affirming choices for women. Here in the Diocese of Rockville Centre immediate assistance is available for women and families with an unexpected or unplanned pregnancy. In collaboration with Catholic Charities, Catholic Health Services has established a one-call outreach program via 1(855)301-4CHS with access to resources in the community. Services are given both to uphold the unborn baby’s right to life and help sustain mother and baby following birth. Help women and men who have suffered an abortion. Programs offering hope and healing following abortion are also available. Pro-ject Rachel is a network of specially trained, compassionate caregivers, who are prepared to assist those who suffer from abortion loss. Call 1(516) 766-2538 (se habla espanol) or email [email protected] to begin healing after abortion loss. Build the Culture of Life. Talk the pro-life talk with your family members, friends, co-workers, schoolmates. We can build consensus and change the culture one person at a time. Help educate the next generation. We must nurture young pro-life leaders who are un-conditionally, unapologetically pro-life who see the connection between their faith and their politics and who are willing to put their faith into action. Walk the pro-life walk, every minute of every hour of every day. Teach people to love and value one another. Our actions and words must reflect our respect and deep appreciation for the wondrous gift of human life.

Good stewards believe that God, who has begun this good work in them, will carry it through to completion. In words and deeds,

they can sing with the Psalmist, “The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy!”

Family—Children—Faith Formation

Second Sunday -Ordinary time- Year C This Sunday: God’s message for you………

In our Gospel story, Jesus is at a Wedding in Cana and does the first miracle -changing water into wine. Birthday parties are lots of fun, aren’t they? Besides the birthday boy or girl, the cake is the central highlight of the party! Can you imagine a birthday party where they run out of cake? That would be disastrous!! One time, Jesus was a guest at a wedding. His disciples and Mary, his mother, were also at the wedding. Well, during the party after the ceremony, they ran out of wine. A wedding without wine was like a birthday party without cake! It was a disaster! The host would be feeling terribly bad.

Mary, Jesus’ mother felt sorry for the host, she told Jesus to do something about it. “Jesus asked the servants to fill up six jars with water. He blessed the water and it turned into wine—the best wine of the party! Everyone enjoyed it. He made everybody happy. Miracles are happenings that cannot be explained by ordinary means. Jesus always had a reason for the miracles he did. He was never showing off and he was not a magician performing tricks. It was real. Jesus performed miracles to help people believe that He is the Messiah, the Son of God. Through Jesus, God did what is impossible for us to do on our own. He provided forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life.

Parents: find out some ways to give your children the gifts of faith and hope: Faith gives hope and the feeling that you are never truly alone. all children should experience that.

Activities to do at home: Share miracle stories. Read and pray together. Have a meal together. Father, we thank you for sending your Son. Help us to do what he has told us to do in your Holy Word. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Theresa Morale, MHA, CTRS is a recreation therapist with over 20 years experience educating seniors regarding the benefits of leisure pur-suits to maintain and enhance cognitive health and overall well-being. In this session, Mrs. Morale will present information about the benefits of singing and music-making (specifically drumming and connecting to body rhythms). In recent years, evidence-based research has shown

that making music can lower blood pressure, decrease heart rate, reduce stress, lessen anxiety and depression and en-hance immunological response. Singing and practicing with a new instrument at any age enhances cognition and mem-ory. Mrs. Morale will facilitate a music session in which participants have an opportunity to sing along to upbeat nos-talgic music and make music using hand held frame drums, other percussive instruments as well as nontraditional “kitchen band” instruments. Participants do not need to have a musical background. The session is 1 hour in length and

includes a combination of lecture style instruction, hands-on demonstration and ‘teach-back’ (active participation) by participants.

Can you spend one hour with Him? St. Anthony's Parish Nocturnal Adoration Society is in need of additional adorers/leaders to serve one hour on the 1st Friday of each month in one of our seven hourly bands, which rotate each month between the hours of 11:00 PM Friday and 5:00 AM Saturday morning. If you're caught up in the hectic activities of daily life, you may welcome the solitude and serenity of spending one hour each month in vigil in the presence of the Blessed Sacra-ment. The Nocturnal Adoration Society is dedicated to prayer before the Eucharist for the praise of God, supplication, thanksgiving and the repara-tion of sins. For more information, please call Jim Levens at (631) 261-1619. Thank you.

COME PRAY WITH US AS WE ASK THE FAVOR OF God through the intercession of St. Monica! (the 1st and 4th Wednesday of each month) at St. Anthony’s at 7:45 AM

We will pray especially for our children, grandchil-dren and families during these challenging times. St. Monica prayed many years for the conversion of her son, Augustine, who later became a saint and doctor of the church. She is the patron saint of mothers, widows, wives, marriage, disappointing children, alcoholics, vic-tims of unfaithfulness or abuse, and conversion. Cure' of Ars (Merrick) parishioners have experienced many graces and miracles after asking St. Monica’s intercession for their fami-lies. They have shared their booklet filled with powerful prayers for use in our group. We hope you will join us! For more information, please call or text Bogna at (631) 404-0960.

It is important to recognize that surgery, medical emergencies, and people receiving chemotherapy are still in vital need of your donation. Sign up after Mass January 26 and 27, or call Ronnie @ 631-757-2790 to schedule an appointment.

Walk-Ins are certainly welcome, but it helps if people sign up in advance so we may adequately staff the drive.
