BANNS I Autumn Kraiger & Kyle Cox Joseph Szerpicki SUNDAY THOUGHT
Mark 1: 21-28
In today’s Gospel we are told that the people in the
synagogue in Capernaum were impressed by Jesus
because His teaching carried authority with it. What is
meant by this is that Jesus wasn’t just passing on what
other people were thinking or saying about things or
expressing current trends and opinion polls. Jesus
always spoke the clear and unadulterated truth. He
wasn’t concerned whether He would be accepted by
others or, as will eventually be the case, rejected by His
own people. God’s word of truth cannot be contained.
Even the demons as we hear today in our passage were
impressed by Jesus’ integrity. As Jesus’ followers
today, we likewise are to be men and women of the
truth of God’s forgiving and healing message of
Salvation; a message that will receive mixed reactions
as it did when it was first spoken by Jesus himself. Let
us invoke the Holy Spirit’s assistance today for the
courage we need to be witness of the Gospel.

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 28, 2018
CELEBRATING THE SAINTS
Saint Nimatullah Kassab, Monk (1808-1858)
Born Youssef Kassab, in 1808 in the village of
Hardine, in North Governorate of Lebanon, one of seven
children of George Kassab and Marium Raad, the daughter
of a priest in the Maronite Church. As a boy Youssef
attended the school run by the monks of the Lebanese
Maronite Order at the Monastery of St. Anthony in the
village of Houb. After he finished his studies there in 1822,
he entered the Monastery of St. Anthony in Qozhaya,
entering the novitiate of the Order which had taught him in
November 1828, at which time he took the monastic name
of Nimatullah, which means “the grace of God”.
During his novitiate he learned book-binding; after
ordination, he studied philosophy and theology. He was
assigned to teach the monks and their young students in
their seminary, among whom was the future saint Sharbel
Makhluf.
Nimatullah went often to the chapel, where he
prayed before the tabernacle with his arms outstretched in
the form of a cross. He was deeply attached to the Mother
of God under the title of her Immaculate Conception. Such
a man of prayer could have found great consolation in the
solitude of a hermitage, but Nimatullah felt called to a
shared community life. “Those who struggle for virtue in
community life will have greater merit,” he told his brother
who had also entered religious life.
As a monk, Nimatullah spent his entire life in
service of his Order. He was severe on himself, but a model
of patience and forbearance to his fellow religious, to the
point where he was reprimanded for his leniency.
Nimatullah fell ill in the winter of 1858, dying after
suffering nearly two weeks of high fever on 14 December.
In 1864, his tomb was opened for re-burial and, to the
surprise of the monks, his body was found to be incorrupt.
Such was the reverence with which he was held during his
life, that his body was exposed to the veneration of the
public until 1927, when a Committee of Inquiry into his
possible canonization had completed its work. His body
was then buried in a small chapel in the Monastery of St.
Anthony. When Nimatullah was canonized by Saint Pope
John Paul II, he prayed, “May his example enlighten our
journey and bring forth, especially in young people, a true
desire for God and for holiness to proclaim to our world the
light of the Gospel!” Saint Nimatullah Kassab’s feast day is
celebrated on December 14th.

MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the presence of God in the midst of events. Begin your conversation with God with this question:
Question: The unclean spirits recognized Jesus as “the Holy One of God.” When you did you first recognize Jesus as Lord? What does it mean to you that Jesus is Lord?

YOUR MERCY: TRANSFORMING LIVES AND
COMMUNITIES.
Many parishioners received letters in January,
inviting their support of the Annual Appeal. Please
pray for the good work of Catholic Charities and
make a pledge today. Your donation makes a
difference!
Your support of the 2018 Catholic Charities Annual
Appeal will help us serve those individuals who are
most in need and most vulnerable. From Matthew’s
Gospel: Whatever you did for the least of these, you
did it for me. When we feed the hungry, take care
of the sick, and welcome the stranger, we are also
serving Jesus himself.
We appreciate your donation and will take special
care to use it wisely in providing essential programs
and services to people in need throughout all eight
counties of the Diocese of Cleveland.
We invite you to view stories of inspiration and
more information at
www.catholiccommunity.org/2018Appeal.
