    Dear Friends,

And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Mk 1:11

The voice of the Father rings out over the Jordan river valley proclaiming the paternal care He has for His only begotten Son. This is

the proclamation that is made each time a person is brought to the baptismal font, “You are my beloved son/daughter; with you I am

well pleased.” While parents give their children to God at that moment (I am always reminding them of this) often, they are still in-

secure and haven’t given themselves over to the love of the Father completely, so the lives of their children are influenced by their

insecurities. Then, at some point God willing, we are led to recognize our insecurities and wounds from which we act, perhaps which

we learned or incurred from our parents. At every stage of our lives, God the Father is there and wants to guide us to true and lasting

freedom in the perfect love that dispels all fear.

As an infant, Jesus learned the love of a father first from St. Joseph. He knew the love of God the Father from all eternity, and then in

time, He was given to know the paternal protection of St. Joseph, who trusted in God even when it was hard. St. Joseph did not hesi-

tate to follow God’s will and guidance even as he knew that the Holy Family was in danger. St. Joseph is there for us, as well, as we

struggle to trust. This lack of trust is often due to the lack of paternal protection or guidance that we experienced as children, which

caused wounds in our hearts that many of us have been carrying unknowingly for years. Pope Francis speaks about the wounds that

we are carrying in his Apostolic Letter Patris Corde pointing us to St. Joseph as a courageous father.

If the first stage of all true interior healing is to accept our personal history and embrace even the things in life that we did not

choose, we must now add another important element: creative courage. This emerges especially in the way we deal with difficulties.

In the face of difficulty, we can either give up and walk away, or somehow engage with it. At times, difficulties bring out resources

we did not even think we had.

As we read the infancy narratives, we may often wonder why God did not act in a more direct and clear way. Yet God acts through

events and people. Joseph was the man chosen by God to guide the beginnings of the history of redemption. He was the true

“miracle” by which God saves the child and His mother. God acted by trusting in Joseph’s creative courage. Arriving in Bethlehem

and finding no lodging where Mary could give birth, Joseph took a stable and, as best he could, turned it into a welcoming home for

the Son of God come into the world (cf. Lk 2:67). Faced with imminent danger from Herod, who wanted to kill the child, Joseph was

warned once again in a dream to protect the child and rose in the middle of the night to prepare the flight into Egypt (cf. Mt 2:13

    14).

A superficial reading of these stories can often give the impression that the world is at the mercy of the strong and mighty, but the

“good news” of the Gospel consists in showing that, for all the arrogance and violence of worldly powers, God always finds a way

to carry out His saving plan. So too, our lives may at times seem to be at the mercy of the powerful, but the Gospel shows us what

counts. God always finds a way to save us, provided we show the same creative courage as the carpenter of Nazareth, who was able

to turn a problem into a possibility by trusting always in divine providence.

St. Joseph is there to guide us to trust in the will of the Father and to be that courageous paternal example for us, as we read and

meditate on the infancy narratives and how he protected Jesus and Mary so faithfully and unselfishly. He is a wonderful guide to

give us the courage to plumb the depths of our heart, to see the wounds that are there, and to bring them to the light of God’s love so

that they might be healed. He is also there to help us to see that God created us for this time and whatever trial or difficulty we are

experiencing. He has given us the grace to trust in His plan so that we do not act out of our fear or insecurities.

We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God

in him. In this is love brought to perfection among us, that we have confidence on the day of judgment because as He is, so are we in

this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is

not yet perfect in love. We love because he first loved us. 1Jn 4:1619

In the week ahead, I will be taking some time away with the Father to ponder that love as I head to Mount Angel. I will be praying

for all of you, especially that this Year of St. Joseph will lead to the healing of your hearts and greater trust in the Father’s will for

    you.
