The Solemnity of the Most Ho-ly Trinity
2
Dear Friends,
Today is Trinity Sunday, which most priests find the most difficult to preach on; and rightly so! The Mystery of the Trinity goes beyond our abilities to comprehend it, in the same way that the Incarnation goes beyond our abil-ity to fully grasp it, but is nonetheless something radically true and necessary for our lives.
This Sunday, I would like to focus on vocation and how it is an expression of the Trinity. The Trinity is a com-munion of love: The Father begetting (not creating!), the Son, and the Holy Spirit preceding from their outpoured love. But instead of delving into these deep theological realities, I want to focus on how the Church talks about vocation, and in particular, the vocation to which Jesus has called me: to the priesthood.
Every vocation -- marriage, religious life, consecrated lay life, and holy orders -- is a vocation to love: to outpour ourselves for others in imitation (and only with the grace and help!) of Jesus. We know that this doesn't mean everything is always rosey. We probably only need to ask our parents! The only way that this great outpouring of love is sustainable is in the affection that Jesus has shown to each of us -- in being uniquely created and chosen to follow Him and having been given companions on the journey wherein Christ builds up His Body. GK Chester-ton talked about God as "the hound of heaven," because God always pursues us -- He wants our happiness and wants us to be with Him, to see how that happiness can be complete!
In my own vocation to the priesthood, Jesus calls me to give myself. . . to all of you! We talk about serving at the altar, and in a very real way, the priest's whole life revolves around making sure his parishioners are served: are given God's life, and are accompanied by Jesus' presence through the Sacraments so that they might inflame the world with the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. As a priest, I look forward to taking on this character even more seriously when I celebrate the Mass and especially when I hear confessions.
Jesus has affection for us! It is shown not by just giving us a book, but giving us His own self and life handed down sacramentally in a communion of persons He has called to Himself -- the Church. In coming closer to Him, He transforms us more and more in ways we can't even comprehend. And Jesus has asked me to help Him come to you, so you can bring Him to the world. It is a life lived out of a deep communion of love, and one wherein I hope for your prayers.
In celebrating this momentous occasion in my life, I invite all of you (and your friends and neighbors; your fami-lies and relatives; your coworkers and employers; Catholic and non-Catholic!) to my ordination to the Priesthood at 10 AM on June 9th, 2018 at St. James Cathedral in downtown Seattle. The next day, June 10th, I will celebrate my first Mass of Thanksgiving at 10:45 AM at St. Anthony. Each of these events will probably be quite full, so I encourage you to carpool and arrive early: bring a spiritual book to read, and enter into conversation with Je-sus! Together, on these two days, we have a great opportunity to pray for each other and worship God, the Holy Trinity, in thanksgiving for the Church, and for the vocation to which He has uniquely called each of us: a voca-tion of love rooted in Him!

First Friday Mass and Adoration Friday, June 1, 2018 at 7:30 pm. In order to make sure that Jesus is never left alone while exposed with Blessed Sacrament, we have asked that 2 or 3 people for each hour of the night commit to being in the church.
“Would you not spend one hour with me?”
